    Dodecahedral topology fails to explain quadrupole-octupole alignment

    The CMB quadrupole and octupole, as well as being weaker than expected, align suspiciously well with each other. Non-trivial spatial topology can explain the weakness. Might it also explain the alignment? The answer, at least in the case of the Poincare dodecahedral space, is a resounding no.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Polynomial Interpretation of Multipole Vectors

    Copi, Huterer, Starkman and Schwarz introduced multipole vectors in a tensor context and used them to demonstrate that the first-year WMAP quadrupole and octopole planes align at roughly the 99.9% confidence level. In the present article the language of polynomials provides a new and independent derivation of the multipole vector concept. Bezout's Theorem supports an elementary proof that the multipole vectors exist and are unique (up to rescaling). The constructive nature of the proof leads to a fast, practical algorithm for computing multipole vectors. We illustrate the algorithm by finding exact solutions for some simple toy examples, and numerical solutions for the first-year WMAP quadrupole and octopole. We then apply our algorithm to Monte Carlo skies to independently re-confirm the estimate that the WMAP quadrupole and octopole planes align at the 99.9% level.Comment: Version 1: 6 pages.     Exact Polynomial Eigenmodes for Homogeneous Spherical 3-Manifolds

    Observational data hints at a finite universe, with spherical manifolds such as the Poincare dodecahedral space tentatively providing the best fit. Simulating the physics of a model universe requires knowing the eigenmodes of the Laplace operator on the space. The present article provides explicit polynomial eigenmodes for all globally homogeneous 3-manifolds: the Poincare dodecahedral space S3/I*, the binary octahedral space S3/O*, the binary tetrahedral space S3/T*, the prism manifolds S3/D_m* and the lens spaces L(p,1).Comment: v3.     Predicting the interactions between rivers and groundwater pumping

    Abstract We summarise research that the eWater Cooperative Research Centre is carrying out incorporating groundwater-surface water interaction capabilities into the next generation of river management tools being developed for Australia's large river basins. We describe three simplified modelling approaches that are currently in development: (i) a reach scale 'Groundwater-Surface Water Link' model, which operates as a groundwater link to river models and accounts for interactions at the river-reach scale; (ii) a sub-reach scale 'Floodplain Processes' model, which dynamically models bank storage, evapotranspiration, and floodplain inundation. It enables more refined modelling of groundwater-surface water interactions, and can be linked to ecological response models; and (iii) a catchment scale model that estimates the surface and sub-surface flow components to streams

    Genetic determinants of telomere length from 109,122 ancestrally diverse whole-genome sequences in TOPMed

    Genetic studies on telomere length are important for understanding age-related diseases. Prior GWAS for leukocyte TL have been limited to European and Asian populations. Here, we report the first sequencing-based association study for TL across ancestrally-diverse individuals (European, African, Asian and Hispanic/Latino) from the NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program. We used whole genome sequencing (WGS) of whole blood for variant genotype calling and the bioinformatic estimation of telomere length in n=109,122 individuals. We identified 59 sentinel variants (p-value OBFC1indicated the independent signals colocalized with cell-type specific eQTLs for OBFC1 (STN1). Using a multi-variant gene-based approach, we identified two genes newly implicated in telomere length, DCLRE1B (SNM1B) and PARN. In PheWAS, we demonstrated our TL polygenic trait scores (PTS) were associated with increased risk of cancer-related phenotypes
