Picturing Teacher Agency: Developing Upstanding Heuristics in a Middle Grades Social Studies Methods Course
This paper presents a multi-case study of teacher candidates in a pre-service middle grades social studies methods course. The research aimed to understand how the middle grades teacher candidates viewed their future as upstanders with agency in middle grades settings. The focus of the research was on heuristic representations that the teacher candidates created to illustrate how they understood their role in supporting the democratic aims of middle grades social studies. Qualitative data was collected and analyzed through chordal triad of agency theory (Emirbayer & Mische, 1998). The findings indicate that preservice teachers best understand their future as change agents through their role of curriculum and instruction and their impact on students, additionally their conceptualizations of their intended agency were influenced by their past and present experiences as well as their projected goals for the future. This research also suggests that heuristics may be a powerful tool in the preparation of teacher candidates, helping them to think through their role in supporting the democratic aims of social studies, middle grades education and social justice education. Capital openness and income inequality: smooth sailing or troubled waters?

It was founded in 2008 to advance policy-relevant knowledge about governance for financial stability, human development, and the environment.The 2008 Financial Crisis and subsequent financial turbulence has triggered economists and policymakers to revisit the extent to which capital account liberalization is optimal for all countries at all levels of development. While that literature has largely concluded that capital account liberalization may have detrimental effects on growth and accentuate financial instability in emerging markets,
relatively little literature has examined the impacts of capital account liberalization on inequality—a
subject that has also been under intense study over the past decade as well. In this paper, we attempt
to build upon and bridge these two literatures to examine the extent to which capital account
liberalization is associated with income inequality in emerging market and developing countries.
We confirm earlier studies that show there is such a relationship between increased capital account
openness and increases in inequality, and that capital account regulations are associated with less
inequality—at least for emerging market economies. We expand on these findings to learn that
there are differential impacts of capital account liberalization on inequality during booms and busts,
being financial development a key factor. During normal times we find that there are positive impacts
on income inequality, whereas during busts capital account liberalization appears to exacerbate
inequality, calling for active policies
An oral health education video game for high caries risk children: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Background: Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood in the world. Many children develop caries early in their lives, and go on to develop further caries and sepsis as they grow up, indicating failure in prevention. As a result, many end up requiring general anaesthesia to undergo treatment for a disease that is completely preventable. Previous studies have suggested that the families of these children need better oral health education as well as better support in implementing healthy practices at home, as they feel impeded by broader life challenges. Parents of these children have suggested utilizing modern technologies, such as the internet, DVDs and video games as methods of delivery of education that might fit in with their busy lifestyles. The aim of this investigation is to assess the acceptability and efficiency of an oral health education video game directed at these children and their families. Methods/Design: A two-armed phase-II randomized controlled trial will assess a children's oral health education video game in comparison with verbal oral health education in terms of: family satisfaction, effect on oral health knowledge, and effect on dietary and oral hygiene habits. Up to 110 four- to ten-year-old children, referred for tooth extraction under general anaesthesia due to caries, will be recruited. A sample of 45 participants in each group will be needed to provide 80 % statistical power. The primary outcome measures for this study are: (1) parent and child satisfaction with the intervention, as indicated using a visual analogue scale (2) improvement in the child's dietary knowledge measured by a pictorial dietary quiz; and (3) changes in the child's diet and oral hygiene habits, measured using a children's dietary questionnaire completed by the parent, and snacking and toothbrushing diaries completed by the child. Measures will be taken at baseline, directly after the intervention, and three months later. Discussion: This study is a phase-II randomized controlled trial of an oral health education video game for high caries risk children and their families. Few protocols such as this are available in this much-needed research area. Trial registration: ISRCTN94617251.</p
Late-time Light Curves of Type II Supernovae: Physical Properties of SNe and Their Environment
We present BVRIJHK band photometry of 6 core-collapse supernovae, SNe 1999bw,
2002hh, 2003gd, 2004et, 2005cs, and 2006bc measured at late epochs (>2 yrs)
based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Gemini north, and WIYN telescopes. We
also show the JHK lightcurves of a supernova impostor SN 2008S up to day 575.
Of our 43 HST observations in total, 36 observations are successful in
detecting the light from the SNe alone and measuring magnitudes of all the
targets. HST observations show a resolved scattered light echo around SN 2003gd
at day 1520 and around SN 2002hh at day 1717. Our Gemini and WIYN observations
detected SNe 2002hh and 2004et, as well. Combining our data with previously
published data, we show VRIJHK-band lightcurves and estimate decline magnitude
rates at each band in 4 different phases. Our prior work on these lightcurves
and other data indicate that dust is forming in our targets from day ~300-400,
supporting SN dust formation theory. In this paper we focus on other physical
properties derived from the late time light curves. We estimate 56Ni masses for
our targets (0.5-14 x 10^{-2} Msun) from the bolometric lightcurve of each for
days ~150-300 using SN 1987A as a standard (7.5 x 10^{-2} Msun). The flattening
or sometimes increasing fluxes in the late time light curves of SNe 2002hh,
2003gd, 2004et and 2006bc indicate the presence of light echos. We estimate the
circumstellar hydrogen density of the material causing the light echo and find
that SN 2002hh is surrounded by relatively dense materials (n(H) >400 cm^{-3})
and SNe 2003gd and 2004et have densities more typical of the interstellar
medium (~1 cm^{-3}). The 56Ni mass appears well correlated with progenitor mass
with a slope of 0.31 x 10^{-2}, supporting the previous work by Maeda et al.
(2010), who focus on more massive Type II SNe. The dust mass does not appear to

The structural analyses of [3-(PPh₃)-3-I-4-(SMe₂)-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₀] or [Pd(C₄H₁₆B₉S)I(C₁₈H₁₅P)], (I), and [3-(PPhMe₂)-3-Cl-4-(SMe₂)-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₀] or [Pd(C₄H₁₆B₉S)Cl(C₈H₁₁P)], (II), show that in comparison with [3-(PR₃)2-closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉H₁₁] the presence of the 4-SMe₂ group causes the [PdX(PR₃)] unit (X = halogen) to twist about an axis passing through the Pd atom and the directly opposite B atom of the carbaborane ligand. The halogen atoms are located almost directly above a C atom in the C₂B₃ face, and the conformations of the [PdX(PR₃)] units above the C₂B₃ faces are not those predicted from molecular orbital calculations of the closo-3,1,2-PdC₂B₉ system. The fact that the variation from the predicted conformation is greater in the case of (I) than in (II) may be ascribed to the greater steric interactions induced by the I atom in (I) compared with the Cl atom in (II)
Subcutaneous Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy with Hizentra® is Safe and Effective in Children Less Than 5 Years of Age.
BACKGROUND:Hizentra® (IGSC 20%) is a 20% liquid IgG product approved for subcutaneous administration in adults and children 2 years of age and older who have primary immunodeficiency disease (PIDD). There is limited information about the use of IGSC 20 % in very young children including those less than 5 years of age. METHODS:A retrospective chart review involved 88 PIDD infants and children less than 5 years of age who received Hizentra®. RESULTS:The mean age at the start of Hizentra® was 34 months (range 2 to 59 months). IGSC 20 % was administered weekly to 86 infants (two additional infants received twice weekly and three times weekly infusions, respectively) and included an average of 63 infusions (range 6-182) for an observation period up to 45.5 months. Infusion by manual delivery occurred in 15 patients. The mean dose was 674 mg/kg/4 weeks. The mean IgG level was 942 mg/dL while on IGSC 20 %, compared to a mean trough IgG level of 794 mg/dL (p < 0.0001) during intravenous or subcutaneous IgG administration prior to IGSC 20 %. Average infusion time was 47 (range 5-120) minutes, and the median number of infusion sites was 2 (range 1-4). Local reactions were mostly mild and observed in 36/88 (41%) children. No serious adverse events were reported. A significant increase in weight percentile (7 % ± 19.2, p = 0.0012) among subjects was observed during IGSC 20% administration. The rate of serious bacterial infections was 0.067 per patient-year while receiving IGSC 20%, similar to previously reported efficacy studies. CONCLUSIONS:Hizentra® is effective in preventing infections, and is well tolerated in children less than age 5 years
What Constitutes Intermarriage for Multiracial People in Britain?
Intermarriage is of great interest to analysts because a group’s tendency to partner across ethnic boundaries is usually seen as a key indicator of the social distance between groups in a multiethnic society. Theories of intermarriage as a key indicator of integration are, however, typically premised upon the union of white and nonwhite individuals, and we know very little about what happens in the unions of multiracial people, who are the children of intermarried couples. What constitutes intermarriage for multiracial people? Do multiracial individuals think that ethnic or racial ancestries are a defining aspect of their relationships with their partners? In this article, I argue that there are no conventions for how we characterize endogamous or exogamous relationships for multiracial people. I then draw on examples of how multiracial people and their partners in Britain regard their relationships with their partners and the significance of their and their partners’ ethnic and racial backgrounds. I argue that partners’ specific ancestries do not necessarily predict the ways in which multiracial individuals regard their partners’ ethnic and racial backgrounds as constituting difference or commonality within their relationships
