Observation of prolonged coherence time of the collective spin wave of atomic ensemble in a paraffin coated Rb vapor cell
We report a prolonged coherence time of the collective spin wave of a thermal
87Rb atomic ensemble in a paraffin coated cell. The spin wave is prepared
through a stimulated Raman Process. The long coherence time time is achieved by
prolonging the lifetime of the spins with paraffin coating and minimize
dephasing with optimal experimental configuration. The observation of the long
time delayed-stimulated Stokes signal in the writing process suggests the
prolonged lifetime of the prepared spins; a direct measurement of the decay of
anti-Stokes signal in the reading process shows the coherence time is up to 300
us after minimizing dephasing. This is one hundred times longer than the
reported coherence time in the similar experiments in thermal atomic ensembles
based on the Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller (DLCZ) and its improved protocols. This
prolonged coherence time sets the upper limit of the memory time in quantum
repeaters based on such protocols, which is crucial for the realization of
long-distance quantum communication. The previous reported fluorescence
background in the writing process due to collision in a sample cell with buffer
gas is also reduced in a cell without buffer gas.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Polytypism and Unexpected Strong Interlayer Coupling of two-Dimensional Layered ReS2
The anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) layered materials,
with both scientific interest and potential application, have one more
dimension to tune the properties than the isotropic 2D materials. The
interlayer vdW coupling determines the properties of 2D multi-layer materials
by varying stacking orders. As an important representative anisotropic 2D
materials, multilayer rhenium disulfide (ReS2) was expected to be random
stacking and lack of interlayer coupling. Here, we demonstrate two stable
stacking orders (aa and a-b) of N layer (NL, N>1) ReS2 from ultralow-frequency
and high-frequency Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and
first-principles density functional theory calculation. Two interlayer shear
modes are observed in aa-stacked NL-ReS2 while only one interlayer shear mode
appears in a-b-stacked NL-ReS2, suggesting anisotropic-like and isotropic-like
stacking orders in aa- and a-b-stacked NL-ReS2, respectively. The frequency of
the interlayer shear and breathing modes reveals unexpected strong interlayer
coupling in aa- and a-b-NL-ReS2, the force constants of which are 55-90% to
those of multilayer MoS2. The observation of strong interlayer coupling and
polytypism in multi-layer ReS2 stimulate future studies on the structure,
electronic and optical properties of other 2D anisotropic materials
Characteristic analysis of α-fetoprotein-producing gastric carcinoma in China
α-Fetoprotein-producing gastric cancer (AFPGC) is a rare type of gastric cancer. The largest population of patients with AFPGC is found in China. In the present study, a total of 4,779 GC patients, including 317 AFPGC patients, from 11 clinical studies in China with a general AFPGC/GC ratio of 6.63% were summarized and analyzed. On the basis of analysis of the clinical data, the patients with AFPGC had larger tumor size, weaker cell differentiation, worse histopathological types, deeper serosal infiltration, more lymph node and liver metastases, poorer stages, shorter survival time and more positive expression of vascular endothelial growth factors than the patients without AFPGC. Our observation is consistent with previous results reported in studies of AFPGC. Overall, AFPGC is a subtype of GC with a poor prognosis
Improving mobility of silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor devices for quantum dots by high vacuum activation annealing
To improve mobility of fabricated silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)
quantum devices, forming gas annealing is a common method used to mitigate the
effects of disorder at the Si/SiO2 interface. However, the importance of
activation annealing is usually ignored. Here, we show that a high vacuum
environment for implantation activation is beneficial for improving mobility
compared to nitrogen atmosphere. Low-temperature transport measurements of Hall
bars show that peak mobility can be improved by a factor of two, reaching 1.5
m^2/(Vs) using high vacuum annealing during implantation activation. Moreover,
the charge stability diagram of a single quantum dot is mapped, with no visible
disturbance caused by disorder, suggesting possibility of fabricating
high-quality quantum dots on commercial wafers. Our results may provide
valuable insights into device optimization in silicon-based quantum computing.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Hypophosphatemia during continuous veno-venous hemofiltration is associated with mortality in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury
INTRODUCTION: The primary aim of this study was to determine whether hypophosphatemia during continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH) is associated with the global outcome of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: 760 patients diagnosed with AKI and had received CVVH therapy were retrospectively recruited. Death during the 28-day period and survival at 28 days after initiation of CVVH were used as endpoints. Demographic and clinical data including serum phosphorus levels were recorded along with clinical outcome. Hypophosphatemia was defined according to the colorimetric method as serum phosphorus levels < 0.81 mmol/L (2.5 mg/dL), and severe hypophosphatemia was defined as serum phosphorus levels < 0.32 mmol/L (1 mg/dL). The ratio of CVVH therapy days with hypophosphatemia over total CVVH therapy days was calculated to reflect the persistence of hypophosphatemia. RESULTS: The Cox proportional hazard survival model analysis indicated that the incidence of hypophosphatemia or even severe hypophosphatemia was not associated with 28-day mortality independently (p = 0.700). Further analysis with the sub-cohort of patients who had developed hypophosphatemia during the CVVH therapy period indicated that the mean ratio of CVVH therapy days with hypophosphatemia over total CVVH therapy days was 0.58, and the ratio independently associated with the global outcome. Compared with the patients with low ratio (< 0.58), those with high ratio (≥ 0.58) conferred a 1.451-fold increase in 28-day mortality rate (95% CI 1.103–1.910, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Hypophosphatemia during CVVH associated with the global clinical outcome of critically ill patients with AKI. The ratio of CVVH therapy days with hypophosphatemia over total CVVH therapy days was independently associated with the 28-day mortality, and high ratio conferred higher mortality rate
Higher Carbohydrate Antigen 125 Levels Are Associated with Increased Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in Elderly Chinese: A Population-Based Case-Control Study
Background: High carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA-125) level was reported to be associated with some cardiac dysfunctions, such as chronic heart failure, but the relationship between CA-125 level and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the potential association in a Chinese older population. Methods: In a population-based case-control study conducted in a Chinese older population, serum CA-125 levels were measured in 1177 diagnosed CHD patients and 3531 age and sex matched control subjects without CHD. Results: Serum CA-125 level was significantly higher in CHD patients than controls (P < 0.001) with adjustment for age, gender, smoking, drinking, BMI, physical activity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, medication history and family history of CHD and myocardial infarction. CHD risk was doubled (OR: 2.10, 95%CI: 1.69-2.60) among subjects in the highest quartile compared to those in the lowest quartile of CA-125 level (Ptrend < 0.001). Furthermore, CA-125 levels were associated with CHD risks in subjects with age over 60 years (OR: 2.19, 95%CI: 1.75-2.73), current smokers (OR: 2.29, 95%CI: 1.50-3.49), current drinkers (OR: 2.35, 95%CI: 1.57-3.53) and subjects with hypertension (OR: 2.04, 95%CI: 1.71-2.43). Conclusions: Elevated serum CA-125 level might be associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease in the Chinese older population. Further investigations are needed to identify the possible biological role of CA-125 in CHD development in the future
