Density fluctuations of hard-sphere fluids in narrow confinement

Get PDF
Spatial confinement induces microscopic ordering of fluids, which in turn alters many of their dynamic and thermodynamic properties. However, the isothermal compressibility has hitherto been largely overlooked in the literature, despite its obvious connection to the underlying microscopic structure and density fluctuations in confined geometries. Here, we address this issue by probing density profiles and structure factors of hard- sphere fluids in various narrow slits, using x-ray scattering from colloid-filled nanofluidic containers and integral-equation-based statistical mechanics at the level of pair distributions for inhomogeneous fluids. Most importantly, we demonstrate that density fluctuations and isothermal compressibilities in confined fluids can be obtained experimentally from the long-wavelength limit of the structure factor, providing a formally exact and experimentally accessible connection between microscopic structure and macroscopic, thermodynamic properties. Our approach will thus, for example, allow direct experimental verification of theoretically predicted enhanced density fluctuations in liquids near solvophobic interfaces

The future of evapotranspiration : global requirements for ecosystem functioning, carbon and climate feedbacks, agricultural management, and water resources

Get PDF
The fate of the terrestrial biosphere is highly uncertain given recent and projected changes in climate. This is especially acute for impacts associated with changes in drought frequency and intensity on the distribution and timing of water availability. The development of effective adaptation strategies for these emerging threats to food and water security are compromised by limitations in our understanding of how natural and managed ecosystems are responding to changing hydrological and climatological regimes. This information gap is exacerbated by insufficient monitoring capabilities from local to global scales. Here, we describe how evapotranspiration (ET) represents the key variable in linking ecosystem functioning, carbon and climate feedbacks, agricultural management, and water resources, and highlight both the outstanding science and applications questions and the actions, especially from a space-based perspective, necessary to advance them

Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

Get PDF
A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0η4.52.0 \eta 4.5, transverse momenta pT20p_\text{T} 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60m()12060 m(\ell\ell) 120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}\sigma_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable ϕη\phi^*_\eta

Comparison of the Transport Mechanism in Underdoped High Temperature Superconductors and in Spin Ladders

Full text link
Recently, the normal state resistivity of high temperature superconductors (in particular in La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals) has been studied extensively in the region below Tc by suppressing the superconducting state in high magnetic fields. In the present work we report on the normal state resistance of underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 thin films under epitaxial strain, measured far below Tc by applying pulsed fields up to 60 T. We will compare the transport measurements on these high temperature superconductors with transport data reported for the Sr2.5Ca11.5Cu24O41 spin ladder compound. This comparison leads to an interpretation of the data in terms of the recently proposed 1D quantum transport model and the charge-stripe models.Comment: 5 pages, PDF fil

The production of tt‾ , W+bb‾ and W+cc‾ is studied in the forward region of proton–proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98±0.02 fb−1 . The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets. All measured cross-sections are in agreement with next-to-leading-order Standard Model predictions.The production of ttt\overline{t}, W+bbW+b\overline{b} and W+ccW+c\overline{c} is studied in the forward region of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98 ±\pm 0.02 \mbox{fb}^{-1}. New algorithms for identifying the flavour of B0mesons using pions and protons

Get PDF
Two new algorithms for use in the analysis of pp collision are developed to identify the flavour of B0mesons at production using pions and protons from the hadronization process. The algorithms are optimized and calibrated on data, using B0→D-π+ decays from pp collision data collected by LHCb at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV . The tagging power of the new pion algorithm is 60% greater than the previously available one; the algorithm using protons to identify the flavour of a B0meson is the first of its kind.</p

A study of CP violation in B-+/- -> DK +/- and B-+/- -> D pi(+/-) decays with D -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) final states

A first study of CP violation in the decay modes B±[KS0K±π]Dh±B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm \pi^\mp]_D h^\pm and B±[KS0Kπ±]Dh±B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\mp \pi^\pm]_D h^\pm, where hh labels a KK or π\pi meson and DD labels a D0D^0 or D0\overline{D}^0 meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb1^{-1}. The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase γ\gamma through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of γ\gamma using other decay modes

Decays of beauty baryons to the D0phD^0 p h^- and Λc+h\Lambda_c^+ h^- final states (where hh indicates a pion or a kaon) are studied using a data sample of pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector. In addition, the first observation is reported of the decay of the neutral beauty-strange baryon Ξb0\Xi_b^0 to the D0pKD^0 p K^- final state, and a measurement of the Ξb0\Xi_b^0 mass is performed.
