Large-scale interaction of the solar wind with comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner
In-situ measurements of comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner have confirmed the accepted basic physics of comet/solar wind interaction. The solar wind magnetic field is captured by the comet through the mechanism of field-line loading by cometary ions and the field lines drape around the cometary ionosphere. With this basic model in hand, the large-scale structure of the plasma tail as revealed by submissions to the Large Scale Phenomena Network of the International Halley Watch is reviewed. The turn-on and turn-off of plasma activity seem consistent with theory. Some 16 obvious disconnection events (DEs) have been recorded. Preliminary results showed agreement with the sector-boundary model; a detailed analysis of all DEs will be required in order to make a definitive statement. A study of plasma activity around the time of the VEGA encounters provides strong support for the sector-boundary model and illustrates once again the power of simultaneous remote and in-situ measurements
Pump-probe differencing technique for cavity-enhanced, noise-canceling saturation laser spectroscopy
We present an experimental technique enabling mechanical-noise free,
cavity-enhanced frequency measurements of an atomic transition and its
hyperfine structure. We employ the 532nm frequency doubled output from a Nd:YAG
laser and an iodine vapour cell. The cell is placed in a traveling-wave
Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with counter-propagating pump and probe beams.
The FPI is locked using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. Mechanical noise
is rejected by differencing pump and probe signals. In addition, this
differenced error signal gives a sensitive measure of differential

The SISO CSPI PDG standard for commercial off-the-shelf simulation package interoperability reference models
For many years discrete-event simulation has been used to analyze production and logistics problems in manufactur-ing and defense. Commercial-off-the-shelf Simulation Packages (CSPs), visual interactive modelling environ-ments such as Arena, Anylogic, Flexsim, Simul8, Witness, etc., support the development, experimentation and visua-lization of simulation models. There have been various attempts to create distributed simulations with these CSPs and their tools, some with the High Level Architecture (HLA). These are complex and it is quite difficult to assess how a set of models/CSP are actually interoperating. As the first in a series of standards aimed at standardizing how the HLA is used to support CSP distributed simula-tions, the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organiza-tion’s (SISO) CSP Interoperability Product Development Group (CSPI PDG) has developed and standardized a set of Interoperability Reference Models (IRM) that are in-tended to clearly identify the interoperability capabilities of CSP distributed simulations
Convergence and Stability of the Inverse Scattering Series for Diffuse Waves
We analyze the inverse scattering series for diffuse waves in random media.
In previous work the inverse series was used to develop fast, direct image
reconstruction algorithms in optical tomography. Here we characterize the
convergence, stability and approximation error of the serie
The XXL Survey V: Detection of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect of the Redshift 1.9 Galaxy Cluster XLSSU J021744.1-034536 with CARMA
We report the detection of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy
cluster XLSSU J021744.1-034536, using 30 GHz CARMA data. This cluster was
discovered via its extended X-ray emission in the XMM-Newton Large Scale
Structure survey, the precursor to the XXL survey. It has a photometrically
determined redshift , making it among the most distant
clusters known, and nominally the most distant for which the SZ effect has been
measured. The spherically integrated Comptonization is
, a measurement which is relatively
insensitive to assumptions regarding the size and redshift of the cluster, as
well as the background cosmology. Using a variety of locally calibrated cluster
scaling relations extrapolated to z~2, we estimate a mass - from the X-ray flux and SZ signal. The measured
properties of this cluster are in good agreement with the extrapolation of an
X-ray luminosity-SZ effect scaling relation calibrated from clusters discovered
by the South Pole Telescope at higher masses and lower redshifts. The full
XXL-CARMA sample will provide a more complete, multi-wavelength census of
distant clusters in order to robustly extend the calibration of cluster scaling

The Microlensing Planet Finder: Completing the Census of Extrasolar Planets in the Milky Way
The Microlensing Planet Finder (MPF) is a proposed Discovery mission that
will complete the first census of extrasolar planets with sensitivity to
planets like those in our own solar system. MPF will employ a 1.1m aperture
telescope, which images a 1.3 sq. deg. field-of-view in the near-IR, in order
to detect extrasolar planets with the gravitational microlensing effect. MPF's
sensitivity extends down to planets of 0.1 Earth masses, and MPF can detect
Earth-like planets at all separations from 0.7AU to infinity. MPF's extrasolar
planet census will provide critical information needed to understand the
formation and frequency of extra solar planetary systems similar to our own.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and

Cultural relativism and the discourse of intercultural communication: aporias of praxis in the intercultural public sphere
The premise of much intercultural communication pedagogy and research is to educate people from different cultures towards open and transformative positions of mutual understanding and respect. This discourse in the instance of its articulation realises and sustains Intercultural Communication epistemologically – as an academic field of social enquiry, and judgementally – as one which locates itself on a moral terrain. By adopting an ethical stance towards difference, the discourse of intercultural communication finds itself caught in a series of aporias, or performative contradictions, where interculturalists are projected simultaneously into positions of cultural relativism on the one hand and ideological totalism on the other. Such aporias arise because the theoretical premises upon which the discourse relies are problematic. We trace these thematics to a politics of presence operating within the discourse of intercultural communication and links this to questions of judgement and truth in the intercultural public sphere. We propose that the politics of presence be set aside in favour of an intercultural praxis which is oriented to responsibility rather than to truth
