Responses to Salduz: procedural tradition, change and the need for effective defence
This article examines the responses of national courts to the ECtHR's decision in Salduz v Turkey that suspects be provided with access to a lawyer before they are first interrogated by the police. It argues that harmonious application of human rights standards in criminal proceedings should build upon common values underpinning the procedural traditions of member states. ECtHR success in gaining acceptance for the principle of access to a lawyer during police interrogation, anchoring it in the privilege against incrimination, is contrasted with resistance towards giving the defence any active role during criminal investigations. It is argued that this resistance can be overcome by an appeal to safeguards that have long dominated the trial process. As the investigation phase increasingly determines the outcome of criminal proceedings, standards of fairness traditionally reserved for the trial process should be applied also to this phase in order to provide suspects with an effective defence
EVALUATION OF THE POSSIBLE THREAT OF NAFTA ON U.S. CATFISH INDUSTRY USING A TRADITIONAL IMPORT DEMAND FUNCTION
The effects of increased exports from NAFTA member countries on the U.S. domestic catfish industry were evaluated. Results showed that the quantity of catfish imported will fall if the domestic price of catfish falls relative to the import price. Past imports have no effect on present imports. The income elasticity was negative indicating that imported catfish may be an inferior good. The Lorentz Force and the Radiation Pressure of Light
In order to make plausible the idea that light exerts a pressure on matter,
some introductory physics texts consider the force exerted by an
electromagnetic wave on an electron. The argument as presented is both
mathematically incorrect and has several serious conceptual difficulties
without obvious resolution at the classical, yet alone introductory, level. We

A Time-Series Analysis of U.S. Kidney Transplantation and the Waiting List: Donor Substitution Effects and "Dirty Altruism"
This paper provides an econometric analysis of the relationship between live and deceased (cadaveric) kidney donations for the United States for the period 1992:IV through 2006:II. Statistical analysis shows that increases in deceased donor transplants reduce future live donor grafts, controlling for both waiting list effects and exogenous trends. The Creation and Propagation of Radiation: Fields Inside and Outside of Sources
We present a new algorithm for computing the electromagnetic fields of
currents inside and outside of finite current sources, for arbitrary time
variations in the currents. Unexpectedly, we find that our solutions for these
fields are free of the concepts of differential calculus, in that our solutions
only involve the currents and their time integrals, and do not involve the time
derivatives of the currents. As examples, we give the solutions for two
configurations of current: a planar solenoid and a rotating spherical shell
carrying a uniform charge density. For slow time variations in the currents, we
show that our general solutions reduce to the standard expressions for the
fields in classic magnetic dipole radiation. In the limit of extremely fast
turn-on of the currents, we show that for our general solutions the amount of
energy radiated is exactly equal to the magnetic energy stored in the static
fields a long time after current creation. We give three associated problem
statements which can be used in courses at the undergraduate level, and one
problem statement suitable for courses at the graduate level. These problems
are of physical interest because: (1) they show that current systems of finite
extent can radiate even during time intervals when the currents are constant;
(2) they explicitly display transit time delays across a source associated with
its finite dimensions; and (3) they allow students to see directly the origin

Basal rot of narcissus : understanding pathogenicity in fusarium oxysporum f. sp. narcissi
Fusarium oxysporum is a globally distributed soilborne fungal pathogen causing root rots, bulb rots, crown rots and vascular wilts on a range of horticultural plants. Pathogenic F. oxysporum isolates are highly host specific and are classified as formae speciales. Narcissus is an important ornamental crop and both the quality and yield of flowers and bulbs can be severely affected by a basal rot caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. narcissi (FON); 154 Fusarium isolates were obtained from different locations and Narcissus cultivars in the United Kingdom, representing a valuable resource. A subset of 30 F. oxysporum isolates were all found to be pathogenic and were therefore identified as FON. Molecular characterisation of isolates through sequencing of three housekeeping genes, suggested a monophyletic origin with little divergence. PCR detection of 14 Secreted in Xylem (SIX) genes, previously shown to be associated with pathogenicity in other F. oxysporum f. spp., revealed different complements of SIX7, SIX9, SIX10, SIX12 and SIX13 within FON isolates which may suggest a race structure. SIX gene sequences were unique to FON and SIX10 was present in all isolates, allowing for molecular identification of FON for the first time. The genome of a highly pathogenic isolate was sequenced and lineage specific (LS) regions identified which harboured putative effectors including the SIX genes. Real-time RT-PCR, showed that SIX genes and selected putative effectors were expressed in planta with many significantly upregulated during infection. This is the first study to characterise molecular variation in FON and provide an analysis of the FON genome. Identification of expressed genes potentially associated with virulence provides the basis for future functional studies and new targets for molecular diagnostics
Kramers-Kronig, Bode, and the meaning of zero
The implications of causality, as captured by the Kramers-Kronig relations
between the real and imaginary parts of a linear response function, are
familiar parts of the physics curriculum. In 1937, Bode derived a similar
relation between the magnitude (response gain) and phase. Although the
Kramers-Kronig relations are an equality, Bode's relation is effectively an
inequality. This perhaps-surprising difference is explained using elementary
examples and ultimately traces back to delays in the flow of information within
