Liquid Phase Electrochemistry at Ultralow Temperatures

    Get PDF
Fluid electrolyte solutions based on mixtures of butyronitrile (PrCN) and ethyl chloride (EtCl) with or as electrolyte freeze below −180°C and provide excellent media for cryogenic electrochemical experiments. A 1:2 mixture of PrCN and EtCl exhibits the best combination of freezing point and ionic conductivity for ultralow temperature electrochemistry. Diffusion coefficients for bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) iron are measurable by potential step chronoamperometry down to −160°C using a conventionally sized electrode, but the resistivity of the solvent mixture is such that potential sweep voltammetry benefits from the use of microdisk (10 and 25 μm diam Pt) or microband (0.2 μm wide Au) electrodes. Voltammetry at a chemically modified electrode down to −170°C is presented for the case of thin films

Programmable bio-nanochip-based cytologic testing of oral potentially malignant disorders in Fanconi anemia

Fanconi anemia (FA) is caused by mutations of DNA repair genes. The risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) among FA patients is 800-folds higher than in the general population. Early detection of OSCC, preferably at it precursor stage, is critical in FA patients to improve their survival. In an ongoing clinical trial, we are evaluating the effectiveness of the programmable bio-nanochip (p-BNC)-based oral cytology test in diagnosing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) in non-FA patients. We used this test to compare cytomorphometric and molecular biomarkers in OSCC cell lines derived from FA and non-FA patients to brush biopsy samples of a FA patient with OPMD and normal mucosa of healthy volunteers. Our data showed that expression patterns of molecular biomarkers were not notably different between sporadic and FA-OSCC cell lines. The p-BNC assay revealed significant differences in cytometric parameters and biomarker MCM2 expression between cytobrush samples of the FA patient and cytobrush samples of normal oral mucosa obtained from healthy volunteers. Microscopic examination of the FA patient's OPMD confirmed the presence of dysplasia. Our pilot data suggests that the p-BNC brush biopsy test recognized dysplastic oral epithelial cells in a brush biopsy sample of a FA patient

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of the experimentally determined characteristics of 18 cambered wings of rectangular plan form

    Get PDF
The effects of one type of camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of rectangular wings at high subsonic and transonic speeds have been studied by applying the transonic similarity rules to the correlation of experimental data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63A2XX and 63A4XX sections, aspect ratios from 1 to 4, and thicknesses from 4 to 8 percent. The data were obtained by use of a transonic bump over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.1

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of experimentally determined characteristics of a series of symmetrical and cambered wings of rectangular plan form

    Get PDF
Transonic similarity rules are applied to the correlation of experimental data for a series of related rectangular wings of varying aspect ratio, thickness, and camber. The data correlation is presented in two parts: the first part presents the correlation for a series of 22 wings having symmetrical NACA 63a-series sections; the second part is concerned with a study of one type of camber by correlation of the data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63a2xx and 63a4xx sections

Using DPLA and the Wikimedia Foundation to Increase Usage of Digitized Resources

The Digital Public Library of America has created a process by which rights-free or openly licensed resources that have already been harvested can be copied over into Wikimedia Commons, thus creating a simple path for including those digital collections materials into Wikipedia articles. By meeting internet users where they already are, rather than relying on them to navigate to individual digital libraries, the access and usage of digital assets is dramatically increased, in particular to user groups that might otherwise not have a reason to interact with such digitized resources
