Order theory and interpolation in operator algebras

We continue our study of operator algebras with and contractive approximate identities (cais). In earlier papers we have introduced and studied a new notion of positivity in operator algebras, with an eye to extending certain C*-algebraic results and theories to more general algebras. Here we continue to develop this positivity and its associated ordering, proving many foundational facts. We also give many applications, for example to noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets, lifting problems, peak interpolation, approximate identities, and to order relations between an operator algebra and the C*-algebra it generates. In much of this it is not necessary that the algebra have an approximate identity. Operator algebras with contractive approximate identities: Weak compactness and the spectrum

We continue our study of operator algebras with contractive approximate identities (cais) by presenting a couple of interesting examples of operator algebras with cais, which in particular answer questions raised in previous papers in this series, for example about whether, roughly speaking, `weak compactness' of an operator algebra, or the lack of it, can be seen in the spectra of its elements.Comment: 11 pages. The Northern Anchovy reduction fishery for the 1978-79 through 1981-82 seasons

Nearly 49,000 metric tons (MT) of anchovies were taken during the 1978-79 season, followed by 32,390 MT in 1979-80, 60,678 MT in 1980-81 and 45,150 MT in 1981-82. A total of 14,076 fish was sampled during the four seasons for age, length and sex. The fishery during the four seasons consisted mainly of young-of-the-year and age groups I and II fish. The 1978 and 1979 yr classes comprised the major share of the catch. Seasonal mean lengths varied from 112 mm standard length (SL) in the 1979-80 season to 122 mm SL for the 1981-82 season. Female to male sex ratios ranged from 1.17:l (1978-79 season) to 1.59:l (1979-80 season). (28pp.

Ideals and hereditary subalgebras in operator algebras

This paper may be viewed as having two aims. First, we continue our study of algebras of operators on a Hilbert space which have a contractive approximate identity, this time from a more Banach algebraic point of view. Namely, we mainly investigate topics concerned with the ideal structure, and hereditary subalgebras (HSA's), which are in some sense generalization of ideals. Second, we study properties of operator algebras which are hereditary subalgebras in their bidual, or equivalently which are `weakly compact'. We also give several examples answering natural questions that arise in such an investigation.Comment: 24 page

Mobile open social language learning: towards a paradigm shift

The authors have undertaken a combination of theoretical analysis together with reflection on a range of practical applications and explorations of mobile, social and open learning, over the years, leading them to the conclusion that a new language learning paradigm, Mobile Open Social Language Learning (MOSLL), is required. MOSLL is based upon the following axiom: In most societies today, characterized by permanent, ubiquitous and pervasive connectedness and mobility, language and learning and digital technology are no longer separate or discrete; they are simply and merely manifestations and aspects of the way things are now. The consequences of articulating this paradigm should be the formulation of the associated research agenda, the scholarly community and the foundational texts that are part of it.
