    Fire management of spinifex pastures in the coastal and West Pilbara

    Spinifex dominated plant communities are a major natural pasture resource in the Pilbara. Spinifex is noted for its ridged, hard and generally sharp pointed leaf blades, although individual species vary in this respect. Triodia pungens and T. schinzii are often referred to as soft spinifex. Soft spinifex is useful as stock feed in its own right, whereas \u27hard\u27 spinifex species are rarely grazed by stock. Soft spinifex dominated pastures are relatively uncommon in eastern parts but important on the western coastal plains of the Pilbara (Figure 1). Information on spinifex management options available to the pastoralist or station manager is hard to come by. This Bulletin seeks to give a brief account of practical field research that has been carried out in the region and promotes the need for a cautious and planned approach to the use of fire.     Over the past ten years there have been significant investments in families uprooted by homelessness, but no data which clearly delineated what types of families had been helped, and how long help may have sustained them. Reported are preliminary data on 875 families who resided in a 60 day family shelter from 1983 through 1987. Field interviews in 1989 with 201 of those families provide data on residential history, employment, familial and demographic changes, service needs and additional homeless episodes. Policy questions focus on current residential stability and community reintegration

    A 1985 class action suit on behalf of homeless individuals living in the City of St. Louis mandates both short-term and long-term services to homeless persons. These court-ordered requirements bring together an interesting triparite system: (1) the adversarial and justice-oriented legal system, (b) the highly political city government, and (c) the traditionally voluntary system of human service providers. Service provision to the homeless, the utility of advocacy, privatization, and the ethics of public disclosure are examined from a sociological conflict and control perspective. The St. Louis experience provides guidance for communities wishing to engage the legal, political, and social service delivery systems on behalf of the complex needs of the homeless

    Turbulence and Wave Dynamics Across Gas–Liquid Interfaces

    Mechanisms are reviewed here for the distortion of turbulent flows near thin density interfaces and their effects on transfer processes across them. Firstly the results of rapid distortion calculations show how the in homogeneous eddy structure depends on whether the turbulence is generated above or below the interface, or in both regions. The flow is unstratified and the buoyancy forces are stable and strong enough relative to the inertial forces that the interface is continuous. It is shown that as the surface blocks the vertical turbulent eddy motions, horizontal straining motions are induced which affect the surface viscous layers and can then induce motions some distance from the interface on the opposite side from where the turbulence is generated. Secondly the paper reviews the physical mechanisms controlling how wind flows over monochromatic and groups of surface waves. The results of triple deck theory for turbulent shear flows, i. e. combining sheltering and unsteady critical layer mechanisms, explain why groups are the most efficient mechanism for waves to extract energy from the wind and therefore enhance transfer properties between atmosphere and water bodies. The third section of the paper reviews the mechanisms for the generation of turbulence coherent roll structures in the ocean surface layer, resulting from surface shear turbulence (normal stress variations), wave-mean shear vortex stretching and rotation, i.e. Langmuir cells, and unstable buoyancy forces (i.e. cooling at the surface) plus mean shear also via vortex rotation. Since these mechanisms are generally additive - exceptional situations exist - they are effective in transporting fluxes downwards into the ocean surface layers

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
