Bright Source of Cold Ions for Surface-Electrode Traps
We produce large numbers of low-energy ions by photoionization of
laser-cooled atoms inside a surface-electrode-based Paul trap. The
isotope-selective trap loading rate of Yb ions/s exceeds
that attained by photoionization (electron impact ionization) of an atomic beam
by four (six) orders of magnitude. Traps as shallow as 0.13 eV are easily
loaded with this technique. The ions are confined in the same spatial region as
the laser-cooled atoms, which will allow the experimental investigation of
interactions between cold ions and cold atoms or Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: Paper submitted to PRL for review on 2/1/0
The Role of Spirituality and the Impact on Social Responsibility
Research on social responsibility shows that community and social organizations play an important role in developing social responsibility. Religious groups comprise a considerable number of community and social organizations. The present study explored the impact of spirituality on social responsibility and assumed a positive correlation. Measures included a demographic questionnaire with questions about religious affiliation and social service, the Social Responsibility Scale (Starrett, 1996) which measures global social responsibility and social activism, the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS) by Allport and Ross (1967) which measures Intrinsic (I) and Extrinsic (E) religious orientation, and the Quest scale (Q) by Batson and Schoenrade (1991) which measures religious searching . Data were gathered from student volunteers. Results indicated that GFU students generally reported that they were Christian, intrinsically oriented, and attended religious services at least once a week. Reed students generally reported they were atheist/agnostic, were extrinsically oriented, and attended religious services less than three times per year. On the Starrett scale, GFU students indicated they were more socially conservative and were more likely to focus social service on individuals, while Reed students were more likely to focus on global and institutional expressions of social service. The two groups were similar on Quest and on Traditional Values and Fatalistic Indifference. The groups also showed similar levels of giving and volunteering. Two distinct patterns of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to social service emerged. One is characterized by Christian commitment, intrinsic religious orientation, high religious participation, and social service focused on individuals. The second is characterized by atheism/agnosticism, extrinsic religious orientation, low religious participation, and social service focused globally and on institutional change. The original goal of identifying three patterns of spirituality and social service was partly successful
The Efficacy of a Brief Behavioral Health Intervention for Managing High Utilization of ED Services by Chronic Pain Patients
Patients with chronic pain continue to seek medical care from emergency departments nationwide despite the fact that an emergency department is a less-than-optimal environment for meeting their specific and specialized needs. As the scientific community has gained a more sophisticated understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of chronic pain, the central role of psychological factors have emerged. Therefore, an ED-based, behavioral health intervention for chronic pain patients is needed to better serve this population and to help hospitals provide cost effective treatment at the appropriate level of care
New Salamanders (Caudata: Plethodontidae) From Guatemala, with Miscellaneous Notes on Known Species
New salamanders in the genera Bolitoglossa and Dendrotriton are described from the highlands of Guatemala. These species are distinguished from their congeners by morphology and molecular differences, including elements of color pattern. These new species of salamanders were collected over the last 30 years, and for many of them the localities of some of these new species are now badly degradedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/111063/1/MP200.pd
Spacetime Supersymmetry in a nontrivial NS-NS Superstring Background
In this paper we consider superstring propagation in a nontrivial NS-NS
background. We deform the world sheet stress tensor and supercurrent with an
infinitesimal B_{\mu\nu} field. We construct the gauge-covariant super-Poincare
generators in this background and show that the B_{\mu\nu} field spontaneously
breaks spacetime supersymmetry. We find that the gauge-covariant spacetime
momenta cease to commute with each other and with the spacetime supercharges.
We construct a set of "magnetic" super-Poincare generators that are conserved
for constant field strength H_{\mu\nu\lambda}, and show that these generators
obey a "magnetic" extension of the ordinary supersymmetry algebra.Comment: 13 pages, Latex. Published versio
Integrated TiO2 resonators for visible photonics
We demonstrate waveguide-coupled titanium dioxide (TiO2) racetrack resonators
with loaded quality factors of 2x10^4 for the visible wavelengths. The
structures were fabricated in sputtered TiO2 thin films on oxidized silicon
substrates using standard top-down nanofabrication techniques, and passively
probed in transmission measurements using a tunable red laser. Devices based on
this material could serve as integrated optical elements as well as passive
platforms for coupling to visible quantum emitters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Spontaneous DC Current Generation in a Resistively Shunted Semiconductor Superlattice Driven by a TeraHertz Field
We study a resistively shunted semiconductor superlattice subject to a
high-frequency electric field. Using a balance equation approach that
incorporates the influence of the electric circuit, we determine numerically a
range of amplitude and frequency of the ac field for which a dc bias and
current are generated spontaneously and show that this region is likely
accessible to current experiments. Our simulations reveal that the Bloch
frequency corresponding to the spontaneous dc bias is approximately an integer
multiple of the ac field frequency.Comment: 8 pages, Revtex, 3 Postscript figure
