Exploring spatial patterns of urban brownfields regeneration: the case of Brno, Czech Republic
Previous studies have demonstrated that the location of brownfields is an important factor affecting potential investor decisions and brownfields regeneration. In this study, the spatial patterns of urban redevelopment are explored, using an analysis of variance model for a detailed database of existing and regenerated brownfields in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. Any general pattern of regeneration – such as ‘the closer to the city centre, the better’, which would be valid for all brownfields – has not been found. Rather, regeneration seems to be a function of local development potential, local occupier-demand for specific utilities, and planning regulations. Higher rates of regeneration have been detected in densely built-up areas (inner city zones and housing estates), while lower rates are registered for areas with low population density and with a greater supply of green spaces (garden colonies, open spaces, industrial zones and villa residential districts). The factors of centrality and transport links are positively associated with retail and business development projects, but negatively associated with the projects of housing development and construction of civic amenities, for which population density and the socioeconomic structure of the local population are significant positive factors. Important implications for further research and urban planning are formulated in the conclusions
Creative Economy: Support of Creative Hubs by the Public Sector in the Urban Environment
Creative hubs are institutional organization of newly emerging creative industries. Economic activities associated with creative industries are very often business-oriented and strongly independent. However, there are often needs for public sector. The aim of paper is to analyze the situation in the Czech Republic and assess the involvement and benefits of the public sector towards the support of these business activities. Methodologically, the work is based on several approaches. Primarily, a database of Czech creative hubs was created as part of desk research. This was followed by quantitative questionnaire survey with representatives of creative hubs and quali tative research in the form of structured interviews with representatives of hubs and the public sector. It was found that without public finances and interest, Czech creative hubs cannot function in the long term. Financial support is therefore the most common form of public support. The main strength of hubs lies in the built community of members, offered services and networking. Conversely, the main weakness is the inability to secure sufficient funds and sponsors. Although public sector cooperation in the Czech Republic is still limited, many public representatives are beginning to realize the benefits of the creative economy and gradually implement it into policies.O
Luxury tourists and their preferences: Perspectives in the Czech Republic
Within the tourism industry, luxury tourism is becoming a growing trend. Thanks to the generosity and willingness of affluent clients to pay, this form of tourism can also be understood as a vehicle for regional development and economic growth. However, to stimulate the decision-making process of luxury consumers, it is necessary to implement effective marketing strategies. Therefore, there is a need for further research in this special tourism segment and the motivation to choose luxury products. This study, based on the questionnaire survey, analyses the Czech luxury tourism market segment. Its aim is to reveal the intentions to buy luxury tourism products. The findings are compared with the results of similar foreign studies. The results suggest that Czech luxury tourists are different in comparison with the traditional European markets. Most of the Czech tourists are willing to pay considerably lower amounts of money for luxury holidays. The frequency of their luxury holidays is also significantly lower. In this respect, the Czechs fall behind the European luxury tourists
Industrial legacy towards modern urban environment: a comparative study of Wroclaw and Brno
The paper examines the spatial structure of industrial production in the urban environment of two Central European cities, Wroclaw and Brno, and their changes during the transformation from centrally controlled to capitalist economies. The study used mapping techniques to analyse the spatial distribution of industrial activities, focusing on the representation of industrial sectors and major industrial enterprises in both cities. The research aimed to evaluate the spatial impacts of deindustrialization on the urban environment and subsequently interpret the functional and structural changes in the cities. Standard methodological procedures in regional sciences, including descriptive statistics and ArcGIS visualization, were employed. The results revealed similarities and differences in the transformation of the two cities and indicated the substantial scale of their post-industrial transformation. Major structural changes have occurred since the 1990s. The last two decades have been directed towards creating modern post-industrial environments while retaining the significant and visible industrial heritage

Regionální specifika lokalizace, atraktivity a chování strany poptávky: příklad nákupních center brněnského regionu
Maloobchod patří do obslužného sektoru, jenž je v současnosti nejsilnějším a
nejdynamičtěji rostoucím sektorem světového hospodářství. Český maloobchod prochází
obdobím největších změn v celé své historii. Fenomén nákupních center je patrně
nejvýraznějším projevem současného maloobchodu v České republice. Nejedná se pouze o
často nepřehlédnutelný fyzický vzhled, ale zejména o ekonomický, společenský a kulturní
fenomén nákupního centra, které generačně změnilo dlouhodobě zaběhlé vzorce nákupního
chování a spotřebitelských preferencí většiny populačních skupin.
a managementu, vždy s prostorovým/regionálním akcentem. Práce tedy propojuje tři
základní přístupy – prostorový, ekonomický a společenský.
strategií, dojížďky a prostorové mobility, atraktivity a úspěšnosti, marketingu a
geografie, nákupní chování a sledované ekonomické subjekty – nákupní centra.
Druhou část tvoří soubor devíti odborných textů publikovaných v časopisech
indexovaných v databázi Web of Science a Scopus. První tři texty mají spíše teroretický,
přehledový a komparační charakter, přičemž spojovacím článkem je maloobchod, zejména
fenomén nákupních center a jeho prostorové (lokalizační), ekonomické a společenské
aspekty.
Retail belongs to the service sector, which is currently the strongest and fastest
growing sector of the world economy. Czech retail is going through a period of the biggest
changes in its entire history. The phenomenon of shopping centres is probably the most
significant manifestation of current retail in the Czech Republic. It is not only the oftenunmissable physical appearance but especially the economic, social and cultural and
phenomenon of the shopping centre, which has generationally changed the long-established
patterns of shopping behaviour and consumer preferences of most population groups.
The presented work uses a multidisciplinary approach, which is relevant for grasping
the topic. The texts are based on selected aspects of scientific disciplines, especially of
economic and regional geography, spatial and regional economics, as well as elements of
sociology and psychology and marketing and management – allways with spatial/regional
emphasis. The work, therefore, connects three basic approaches - spatial, economic and
social.
The work consists of two parts. The first part of the text is devoted to the theoretical
and methodological anchoring of the problem, while (behind a brief input summary of the
transformation of retail in the Czech Republic) focuses on theoretical and methodological
aspects of the phenomenon of shopping centres in terms of: localization, location strategies,
commuting and spatial mobility, attractiveness and success, marketing and management,
shopping behaviour and motivations taken into account by demand (consumers), as well as
current social and economical challenges and the future; the connecting elements are
regional development, regional/spatial economics, economic/regional geography, shopping
bevaiour and researched economic subjects - shopping centers.
The second part consists of a set of nine professional texts published in journals
indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The first three texts have a rather
theoretical, overview and comparative character, while the connecting link is retail,
especially the phenomenon of shopping centres and their spatial (localization), economic
and social aspects. In the following texts, selected specific results of extensive research in
the model area of the Brno agglomeration/Brno metropolitan area are presented, examining
spatial / regional, economic and social ties, shopping behaviour and consumer trends, as well
as marketing and managerial challenges taken into account by demand. The research was
carried out both in municipalities in the (wider) hinterland of Brno and within the city
structure, or retail units, especially shopping centres.Fakulta ekonomicko-správn
