The Discovery of Cometary Activity in Near-Earth Asteroid (3552) Don Quixote
The near-Earth object (NEO) population, which mainly consists of fragments
from collisions between asteroids in the main asteroid belt, is thought to
include contributions from short-period comets as well. One of the most
promising NEO candidates for a cometary origin is near-Earth asteroid (3552)
Don Quixote, which has never been reported to show activity. Here we present
the discovery of cometary activity in Don Quixote based on thermal-infrared
observations made with the Spitzer Space Telescope in its 3.6 and 4.5 {\mu}m
bands. Our observations clearly show the presence of a coma and a tail in the
4.5 {\mu}m but not in the 3.6 {\mu}m band, which is consistent with molecular
band emission from CO2. Thermal modeling of the combined photometric data on
Don Quixote reveals a diameter of 18.4 (-0.4/+0.3) km and an albedo of 0.03
(-0.01/+0.02), which confirms Don Quixote to be the third-largest known NEO. We
derive an upper limit on the dust production rate of 1.9 kg s^-1 and derive a
CO2 gas production rate of (1.1+-0.1)10^26 molecules s^-1. Spitzer IRS
spectroscopic observations indicate the presence of fine-grained silicates,
perhaps pyroxene rich, on the surface of Don Quixote. Our discovery suggests
that CO2 can be present in near-Earth space over a long time. The presence of
CO2 might also explain that Don Quixote's cometary nature remained hidden for

The Effect of a Western Diet on Hepatic Autophagy in Age Accelerated SAMP8 Mice
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is characterized as a dysregulation of hepatic lipid metabolism and a chronic inflammatory state. It is hypothesized the link between lipid dysregulation and inflammation may be due in part to defective hepatic autophagy and reduced mitochondrial capacity to oxidize fatty acids. It remains to be determined; however, the effects of a Western diet on hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function during aging. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a high-fat high fructose diet (HFF) on markers of hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function in an age accelerated mouse model. METHODS: Twenty week old, male and female, SAMP8 mice (n=49) were randomly assigned, matching for gender, to either a standard chow (SC) or HFF (45% fat, 24% fructose) diet for 32 weeks. Liver tissue was analyzed for mRNA expression of autophagic (BNIP3, Beclin 1, p62, and Atg7) and mitochondrial (PGC1α and COXIV) genes. Differences between gender and dietary groups were identified by a 2 x 2 ANOVA and statistical significance was set at p\u3c0.05. RESULTS: Following 32 weeks of feeding, male mice fed the HFF diet were significantly heavier than male mice in the SC group (31.6 g vs 26.5 g; p=0.001); however, no difference was observed between diet groups for female mice. The HFF diet resulted in higher autophagic activity as observed by Beclin 1 (+36%; p=0.001) and BNIP3 (+40%; P=0.003) expression. Despite the higher autophagic activity, p62 was higher (+31%; p\u3c0.001) in the HFF
compared to the SC group, suggesting impaired autophagic flux. In addition, mitochondrial COXIV
expression was elevated (+43%; P\u3c0.001) in the HFF group compared to the SC group suggesting increased β-oxidation. Overall, the expression of all autophagic and mitochondrial markers was higher in male compared to female mice; however, both sexes responded similarly to the HFF diet. CONCLUSION: Despite the higher expression of autophagic and mitochondrial genes, elevated expression of p62 suggests an impaired autophagic flux in age accelerated mice following a Western diet
Prevalence of Cam Morphology in Females with Femoroacetabular Impingement
Cam and pincer are two common morphologies responsible for femoroacetabular impingement. Previous literature has reported that cam deformity is predominantly a male morphology, while being significantly less common in females. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of cam morphology in female subjects diagnosed with symptomatic FAI. All females presenting to the senior author’s clinic diagnosed with symptomatic FAI between December 2006 and Cam and pincer are two common morphologies responsible for femoroacetabular impingement. Previous literature has reported that cam deformity is predominantly a male morphology, while being significantly less common in females. Cam morphology is commonly assessed with the alpha angle, measured on radiographs. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of cam morphology utilizing the alpha angle in female subjects diagnosed with symptomatic FAI. All females presenting to the senior author’s clinic diagnosed with symptomatic FAI between December 2006 and January 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Alpha (α) angles were measured on AP (anteroposterior) and lateral (Dunn 90°, cross-table lateral, and/or frog-leg lateral) plain radiographs by two blinded physicians, and the largest measured angle was used. Using Gosvig et al.’s classification, alpha angle was characterized as (pathologic > 57°), borderline (51-56°), subtle (46-50°), very subtle (43-45°), or normal (≤42°). Three hundred and ninety-one patients (438 hips) were analyzed (age 36.2 ± 12.3 years). Among the hips included, 35.6% were normal, 14.6% pathologic, 15.1% borderline, 14.6% subtle, and 20.1% very subtle. There was no correlation between alpha angle and patient age (R = 0.17) or body mass index (BMI) (R = 0.05). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for α-angle measurements was 0.84. Sixty-four percent of females in this cohort had an alpha angle > 42°. Subtle cam deformity plays a significant role in the pathoanatomy of female patients with symptomatic FAI. As the majority of revision hip arthroscopies are performed due to incomplete cam correction, hip arthroscopists need to be cognizant of and potentially surgically address these subtle lesions
Securing the legacy of TESS through the care and maintenance of TESS planet ephemerides
Much of the science from the exoplanets detected by the TESS mission relies
on precisely predicted transit times that are needed for many follow-up
characterization studies. We investigate ephemeris deterioration for simulated
TESS planets and find that the ephemerides of 81% of those will have expired
(i.e. 1 mid-transit time uncertainties greater than 30 minutes) one
year after their TESS observations. We verify these results using a sample of
TESS planet candidates as well. In particular, of the simulated planets that
would be recommended as JWST targets by Kempton et al. (2018), 80% will
have mid-transit time uncertainties 30 minutes by the earliest time JWST
would observe them. This rapid deterioration is driven primarily by the
relatively short time baseline of TESS observations. We describe strategies for
maintaining TESS ephemerides fresh through follow-up transit observations. We
find that the longer the baseline between the TESS and the follow-up
observations, the longer the ephemerides stay fresh, and that 51% of simulated
primary mission TESS planets will require space-based observations. The
recently-approved extension to the TESS mission will rescue the ephemerides of
most (though not all) primary mission planets, but the benefits of these new
observations can only be reaped two years after the primary mission
observations. Moreover, the ephemerides of most primary mission TESS planets
(as well as those newly discovered during the extended mission) will again have
expired by the time future facilities such as the ELTs, Ariel and the possible
LUVOIR/OST missions come online, unless maintenance follow-up observations are

Infrared Lightcurves of Near Earth Objects
We present lightcurves and derive periods and amplitudes for a subset of 38
near earth objects (NEOs) observed at 4.5 microns with the IRAC camera on the
the Spitzer Space Telescope, many of them having no previously reported
rotation periods. This subset was chosen from about 1800 IRAC NEO observations
as having obvious periodicity and significant amplitude. For objects where the
period observed did not sample the full rotational period, we derived lower
limits to these parameters based on sinusoidal fits. Lightcurve durations
ranged from 42 to 544 minutes, with derived periods from 16 to 400 minutes. We
discuss the effects of lightcurve variations on the thermal modeling used to
derive diameters and albedos from Spitzer photometry. We find that both
diameters and albedos derived from the lightcurve maxima and minima agree with
our previously published results, even for extreme objects, showing the
conservative nature of the thermal model uncertainties. We also evaluate the

Rehabilitation Following Hip Arthroscopy – A Systematic Review
CONTEXT: Rehabilitation following hip arthroscopy is an integral component of the clinical outcome of the procedure. Given the increase in quantity, complexity, and diversity of procedures performed, a need exists to define the role of rehabilitation following hip arthroscopy.OBJECTIVES: 1) To determine the current rehabilitation protocols utilized following hip arthroscopy in the current literature, 2) to determine if clinical outcomes are significantly different based on different post-operative rehabilitation protocols; and 3) to propose the best-available evidence-based rehabilitation program following hip arthroscopy.DATA SOURCES: Per PRISMA guidelines and checklist, Medline, SciVerse Scopus, SportDiscus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched.STUDY SELECTION: Level I-IV evidence clinical studies with minimum two-year follow-up reporting outcomes of hip arthroscopy with post-operative rehabilitation protocols described were included. DATA EXTRACTION: All study, subject, and surgery parameters were collected. All elements of rehabilitation were extracted and analyzed. Descriptive statistics were calculated. Study methodological quality was analyzed using the Modified Coleman Methodology Score (MCMS).RESULTS: 18 studies were included (2,092 subjects; 52% male, mean age 35.1 +/- 10.6 years, mean follow-up 3.2 +/- 1.0 years). Labral tear and femoroacetabular impingement were the most common diagnoses treated and labral debridement and femoral/acetabular osteochondroplasty the most common surgical techniques performed. Rehabilitation protocol parameters (weight-bearing, motion, strengthening, and return-to-sport) were poorly reported. Differences in clinical outcomes were unable to be assessed given heterogeneity in study reporting. Omega-3-Fatty Acids Hold Therapeutic Potential for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a debilitating complication of diabetes, affecting over 50% of diabetic patients. Overweight humans display manifestations of diabetic neuropathy before developing overt diabetes and mice fed a high fat diet exhibit signs of neuropathy including mechanical hindpaw hypersensitivity and neuronal inflammation, suggesting fat diet-induced inflammation may play a role in the development of neuropathy. Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and may hold therapeutic potential as a preventative treatment for prediabetic and diabetic patients at risk for neuropathy. PURPOSE: Investigate the impact of diet composition on signs of neuropathy. We hypothesized that a diet rich in n-3 fatty acids would attenuate hindpaw hypersensitivity during prolonged feeding of a high fat diet. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were randomized into four diet groups (n = 12/group) for 32 weeks: 10% low fat-fish oil (LFFO), 41% high fat-fish oil (HFFO), 10% low fat-lard (LFL), or 41% high fat-lard (HFL). Neuropathy was characterized at baseline and every other week thereafter using the von Frey behavioral test for hindpaw mechanical sensitivity. A glucose tolerance test was performed at end study, and total area under the curve (AUC) was calculated using the trapezoidal method. RESULTS: At end study, body weight was greater in HFL compared to all other groups. Body weight was also greater in HFFO compared to LFFO. Fasting glucose and glucose AUC were higher in HFL compared to LFFO and HFFO. Following the same pattern as body weight, fasting glucose was higher in HFFO compared to LFFO. Although percent paw withdrawal was greater in HFL compared to HFFO and LFFO, there were no significant differences for LF vs. HF for fish oil or lard. CONCLUSION: A HFL diet induced signs of neuropathy including hindpaw hypersensitivity, whereas a fish oil diet was protective against hindpaw hypersensitivity. Moreover, omega-3-fatty acids may hold therapeutic potential for neuropathy prevention in nondiabetic and diabetic patients
Deconvolution of Images from BLAST 2005: Insight into the K3-50 and IC 5146 Star-Forming Regions
We present an implementation of the iterative flux-conserving Lucy-Richardson
(L-R) deconvolution method of image restoration for maps produced by the
Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST). We have analyzed
its performance and convergence extensively through simulations and
cross-correlations of the deconvolved images with available highresolution
maps. We present new science results from two BLAST surveys, in the Galactic
regions K3-50 and IC 5146, further demonstrating the benefits of performing
this deconvolution.
We have resolved three clumps within a radius of 4.'5 inside the star-forming
molecular cloud containing K3-50. Combining the well-resolved dust emission map
with available multi-wavelength data, we have constrained the Spectral Energy
Distributions (SEDs) of five clumps to obtain masses (M), bolometric
luminosities (L), and dust temperatures (T). The L-M diagram has been used as a
diagnostic tool to estimate the evolutionary stages of the clumps. There are
close relationships between dust continuum emission and both 21-cm radio
continuum and 12CO molecular line emission.
The restored extended large scale structures in the Northern Streamer of IC
5146 have a strong spatial correlation with both SCUBA and high resolution
extinction images. A dust temperature of 12 K has been obtained for the central
filament. We report physical properties of ten compact sources, including six
associated protostars, by fitting SEDs to multi-wavelength data. All of these
compact sources are still quite cold (typical temperature below ~ 16 K) and are
above the critical Bonner-Ebert mass. They have associated low-power Young
Stellar Objects (YSOs). Further evidence for starless clumps has also been
