John Calvin, Authority, and the Evangelical Conviction of the Evidentness of Truth
John Calvin stands apart as a singularly powerful figure in the history of Western Civilization. His thought undergirds the fundamental principles of liberal democracy that dominate the most advanced nations on earth in the modern age, and his theology continues to influence the doctrine and leadership of the Reformed church’s many inheritors. This paper emphasizes and identifies the importance of understanding of Calvin’s views on secular and ecclesiastical authority and evaluates them
The Crisis of Self-Understanding in Dostoevsky
This paper seeks to explain the characterization of Raskolnikov in Dostoevsky\u27s Crime and Punishment. It makes the argument that Raskolnikov exemplifies the inexhaustible depth of the human consciousness, the quest for self-understanding, and the radical schism of the psyche which Dostoevsky wrote about in other works such as Notes From Underground. Contrasting Crime and Punishment with Joseph Conrad\u27s Heart of Darkness, this paper concludes that Conrad\u27s main character Marlow loses himself in the schism and that Raskolnikov finds peace through confession and repentance

Why blame?
We provide experimental evidence that subjects blame others based on events they are not responsible for. In our experiment an agent chooses between a lottery and a safe asset; payment from the chosen option goes to a principal who then decides how much to allocate between
the agent and a third party. We observe widespread blame: regardless of their choice, agents are blamed by principals for the outcome of the lottery, an event they are not responsible for. We provide an explanation of this apparently irrational behavior with a delegated-expertise
principal-agent model, the subjects’ salient perturbation of the environment
Simultaneous X-ray and Radio Observations of Rotating Radio Transient J1819-1458
We present the results of simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of PSR
J1819-1458. Our 94-ks XMM-Newton observation of the high magnetic field 5*10^13
G pulsar reveals a blackbody spectrum (kT~130 eV) with a broad absorption
feature, possibly composed of two lines at ~1.0 and ~1.3 keV. We performed a
correlation analysis of the X-ray photons with radio pulses detected in 16.2
hours of simultaneous observations at 1-2 GHz with the Green Bank, Effelsberg,
and Parkes telescopes, respectively. Both the detected X-ray photons and radio
pulses appear to be randomly distributed in time. We find tentative evidence
for a correlation between the detected radio pulses and X-ray photons on
timescales of less than 10 pulsar spin periods, with the probability of this
occurring by chance being 0.46%. This suggests that the physical process
producing the radio pulses may also heat the polar-cap.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Accepted to Ap
Hypervelocity Impact of Composite Overwrap Pressure Vessels
There is a limited amount of hypervelocity impact (HVI) data on pressurized composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV). In recent years, NASA has performed HVI tests to characterize impact conditions resulting in either leak or burst of the COPVs representative of spacecraft hardware. This paper reports on the results of 40 tests that have been conducted on several types of COPV configurations, pressurized by inert gas to near the vessels rated maximum expected operating pressure (MEOP). These tests were used to better understand COPV response under HVI conditions and develop ballistic limit equations (BLE) related to these tests
Probing the distance and morphology of the Large Magellanic Cloud with RR Lyrae stars
We present a Bayesian analysis of the distances to 15,040 Large Magellanic
Cloud (LMC) RR Lyrae stars using - and -band light curves from the
Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, in combination with new -band
observations from the Dark Energy Camera. Our median individual RR Lyrae
distance statistical error is 1.89 kpc (fractional distance error of 3.76 per
cent). We present three-dimensional contour plots of the number density of LMC
RR Lyrae stars and measure a distance to the core LMC RR Lyrae centre of
,
equivalently . This finding is statistically consistent with and four
times more precise than the canonical value determined by a recent
meta-analysis of 233 separate LMC distance determinations. We also measure a
maximum tilt angle of at a position angle of
, and report highly precise constraints on the , , and RR
Lyrae period--magnitude relations. The full dataset of observed mean-flux
magnitudes, derived colour excess values, and fitted distances for
the 15,040 RR Lyrae stars produced through this work is made available through
the publication's associated online data.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
