    Theory of spin accumulation and spin transfer torque in a magnetic domain wall

    We study spin accumulation and spin transfer torque in a domain wall by solving the Boltzmann equation with a diffusion approximation. We obtained the analytical expressions of spin accumulation and spin transfer torque. Both the adiabatic and the non-adiabatic components of the spin transfer torque oscillate with the thickness of the domain wall. We show that the oscillation plays a dominant role in the non-adiabatic torque when the domain wall thickness is less than the spin-flip length, which is defined by the product of the Fermi velocity and the spin-flip scattering time

    Magnetic structure of domain walls confined in a nano-oxide layer

    In the recent years, a spin-valve was developed with a current-confined-path structure consisting of a non-oxide-layer (NOL). We analyze magnetic structures of the current-confinedpath in the nano-oxide layer sandwiched between ferromagnetic electrodes and clarify the dependency of the magnetic structure on the shape and size of the current-confined-path. Our results of stiffness energy density and thermal stability shows that we should fabricate a CPP spin-valve with narrow current-confinedpaths with large aspect ratio and strong constriction in order to enhance the MR ratio.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, proceedings paper of Intermag 200

    Using self-gathered data and the hazard model, we analyzed the reasons laid-off workers in the Beijing area remained unemployed. For the laid-off workers who were eventually reemployed, we used the Tobit model to explain the change in wages between their pre- and post-layoff employment. The results of these analyses revealed that, although China’s policy of laying off workers from state-owned enterprises without completely severing the relationship accelerated the establishment of a labor market to some extent, with prolonged time the laid-off workers are out of work, the policy was an obstacle to the labor-marketing effort. Moreover, it was an obstacle to implementing and improving an unemployment benefits system. They also showed that laid-off workers with worked experience under the traditional system need to be reeducated to enable them to adapt to the new economic environment as well as to be taught new skills, especially those workers who were managers. Additionally, the "lay-off" is not only a policy in special phase during the process of Chinese economic system reform, but also a special phenomenon, which is the structural unemployment revealed from Chinese economic system. This unemployment due to changes in industry structure means that the government must adopt a more active employment policy

    Embryonic Senescence and Laminopathies in a Progeroid Zebrafish Model

    Background: Mutations that disrupt the conversion of prelamin A to mature lamin A cause the rare genetic disorder Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome and a group of laminopathies. Our understanding of how A-type lamins function in vivo during early vertebrate development through aging remains limited, and would benefit from a suitable experimental model. The zebrafish has proven to be a tractable model organism for studying both development and aging at the molecular genetic level. Zebrafish show an array of senescence symptoms resembling those in humans, which can be targeted to specific aging pathways conserved in vertebrates. However, no zebrafish models bearing human premature senescence currently exist. Principal Findings: We describe the induction of embryonic senescence and laminopathies in zebrafish harboring disturbed expressions of the lamin A gene (LMNA). Impairments in these fish arise in the skin, muscle and adipose tissue, and sometimes in the cartilage. Reduced function of lamin A/C by translational blocking of the LMNA gene induced apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest, and craniofacial abnormalities/cartilage defects. By contrast, induced cryptic splicing of LMNA, which generates the deletion of 8 amino acid residues lamin A (zlamin A-Δ8), showed embryonic senescence and S-phase accumulation/arrest. Interestingly, the abnormal muscle and lipodystrophic phenotypes were common in both cases. Hence, both decrease-of-function of lamin A/C and gain-of-function of aberrant lamin A protein induced laminopathies that are associated with mesenchymal cell lineages during zebrafish early development. Visualization of individual cells expressing zebrafish progerin (zProgerin/zlamin A-Δ37) fused to green fluorescent protein further revealed misshapen nuclear membrane. A farnesyltransferase inhibitor reduced these nuclear abnormalities and significantly prevented embryonic senescence and muscle fiber damage induced by zProgerin. Importantly, the adult Progerin fish survived and remained fertile with relatively mild phenotypes only, but had shortened lifespan with obvious distortion of body shape. Conclusion: We generated new zebrafish models for a human premature aging disorder, and further demonstrated the utility for studying laminopathies. Premature aging could also be modeled in zebrafish embryos. This genetic model may thus provide a new platform for future drug screening as well as genetic analyses aimed at identifying modifier genes that influence not only progeria and laminopathies but also other age-associated human diseases common in vertebrates.Ellison Medical FoundationGlenn Foundation for Medical Researc

    Interfamily Transfer of Dual NB-LRR Genes Confers Resistance to Multiple Pathogens

    A major class of disease resistance (R) genes which encode nucleotide binding and leucine rich repeat (NB-LRR) proteins have been used in traditional breeding programs for crop protection. However, it has been difficult to functionally transfer NB-LRR-type R genes in taxonomically distinct families. Here we demonstrate that a pair of Arabidopsis (Brassicaceae) NB-LRR-type R genes, RPS4 and RRS1, properly function in two other Brassicaceae, Brassica rapa and Brassica napus, but also in two Solanaceae, Nicotiana benthamiana and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The solanaceous plants transformed with RPS4/RRS1 confer bacterial effector-specific immunity responses. Furthermore, RPS4 and RRS1, which confer resistance to a fungal pathogen Colletotrichum higginsianum in Brassicaceae, also protect against Colletotrichum orbiculare in cucumber (Cucurbitaceae). Importantly, RPS4/RRS1 transgenic plants show no autoimmune phenotypes, indicating that the NB-LRR proteins are tightly regulated. The successful transfer of two R genes at the family level implies that the downstream components of R genes are highly conserved. The functional interfamily transfer of R genes can be a powerful strategy for providing resistance to a broad range of pathogens

    Serum metabolomics profiles in response to n-3 fatty acids in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes: a double-blind randomised controlled trial.

    We aimed to investigate the change of serum metabolomics in response to n-3 fatty acid supplements in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In a double-blind parallel randomised controlled trial, 59 Chinese T2D patients were randomised to receive either fish oil (FO), flaxseed oil (FSO) or corn oil capsules (CO, served as a control group) and followed up for 180 days. An additional 17 healthy non-T2D participants were recruited at baseline for cross-sectional comparison between cases and non-cases. A total of 296 serum metabolites were measured among healthy controls and T2D patients before and after the intervention. Serum 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoate (CMPF) (P-interaction = 1.8 × 10(-7)) was the most significant metabolite identified by repeated-measures ANOVA, followed by eicosapentaenoate (P-interaction = 4.6 × 10(-6)), 1-eicosapentaenoylglycerophosphocholine (P-interaction = 3.4 × 10(-4)), docosahexaenoate (P-interaction = 0.001), linolenate (n-3 or n-6, P-interaction = 0.005) and docosapentaenoate (n-3, P-interaction = 0.021). CMPF level was lower in T2D patients than in the healthy controls (P = 0.014) and it was significantly increased in the FO compared with CO group (P = 1.17 × 10(-7)). Furthermore, change of CMPF during the intervention was negatively correlated with change of serum triglycerides (P = 0.016). In conclusion, furan fatty acid metabolite CMPF was the strongest biomarker of fish oil intake.
