Neutron star composition in strong magnetic fields
We study the problem of neutron star composition in the presence of a strong
magnetic field. The effects of the anomalous magnetic moments of both nucleons
and electrons are investigated in relativistic mean field calculations for a
-equilibrium system. Since neutrons are fully spin polarized in a large
field, generally speaking, the proton fraction can never exceed the field free
case. An extremely strong magnetic field may lead to a pure neutron matter

Role of the VEGF-Flt-1-FAK pathway in the pathogenesis of osteoclastic bone destruction of giant cell tumors of bone
BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of bone are primary benign bone tumors that are characterized by a high number of osteoclast-like multinuclear giant cells (MNCs). Recent studies suggest that the spindle-shaped stromal cells in GCTs are tumor cells, while monocyte-like cells and MNCs are reactive osteoclast precursor cells (OPCs) and osteoclasts (OCs), respectively. In this study, we investigated the pathogenesis of osteoclastic bone destruction in GCTs by focusing on the role of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-Flt-1 (type-1 VEGF receptor)-focal adhesion kinase (FAK) pathway. METHODS: The motility of OPCs cells was assessed by a chemotaxis assay and the growth of OPCs was examined using a cell proliferation assay. The expression of VEGF and activation of Flt-1 and FAK in clinical GCT samples and in OPCs were detected by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting. The correlation between the expression levels of activated Flt-1 and FAK and clinical stages of GCTs was investigated by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In GCT samples, CD68, a marker of OPCs and OCs, co-localized with Flt-1. Conditioned media from GCT tissue (GCT-CM) enhanced the chemotaxis and proliferation of OPCs. GCT-CM also stimulated FAK activation in OPCs in vitro. Moreover, there was a correlation between the clinical stage of GCTs and the expression of tyrosine-phosphorylated Flt-1 and FAK. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the VEGF-Flt-1-FAK pathway is involved in the pathogenesis of bone destruction of GCTs

Scaling relations of metallicity, stellar mass, and star formation rate in metal-poor starbursts: II. Theoretical models
Scaling relations of metallicity (O/H), star formation rate (SFR), and
stellar mass give important insight on galaxy evolution. They are obeyed by
most galaxies in the Local Universe and also at high redshift. In a companion
paper, we compiled a sample of ~1100 galaxies from redshift 0 to ~3, spanning
almost two orders of magnitude in metal abundance, a factor of in
SFR, and of ~10^5 in stellar mass. We have characterized empirically the
star-formation "main sequence" (SFMS) and the mass-metallicity relation (MZR)
for this sample, and also identified a class of low-metallicity starbursts,
rare locally but more common in the distant universe. These galaxies deviate
significantly from the main scaling relations, with high SFR and low metal
content for a given M*. In this paper, we model the scaling relations and
explain these deviations from them with a set of multi-phase chemical evolution
models based on the idea that, independently of redshift, initial physical
conditions in a galaxy's evolutionary history can dictate its location in the
scaling relations. Our models are able to successfully reproduce the O/H, M*,
and SFR scaling relations up to z~3, and also successfully predict the
molecular cloud fraction as a function of stellar mass. These results suggest
that the scaling relations are defined by different modes of star formation: an
"active" starburst mode, more common at high redshift, and a quiescent

Study of the neutron star structure in strong magnetic fields including the anomalous magnetic moments
We study the effects of strong magnetic fields on the neutron star structure.
If the interior field of a star is on the same order of the surface field
currently observed, the influences of the magnetic field on the star mass and
radius are negligible. If one assumes that the internal magnetic field can be
as large as that estimated from the scalar virial theorem, considerable effects
can be induced. The maximum mass of stars is arisen substantially while the
central density is largely suppressed. For two equal-mass stars the radius of
the magnetic star can be larger by about 10% 20% than the nonmagnetic

Radio emission and nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays in the supernova SN 1993J
The extensive observations of the supernova SN 1993J at radio wavelengths
make this object a unique target for the study of particle acceleration in a
supernova shock. To describe the radio synchrotron emission we use a model that
couples a semianalytic description of nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration
with self-similar solutions for the hydrodynamics of the supernova expansion.
The synchrotron emission, which is assumed to be produced by relativistic
electrons propagating in the postshock plasma, is worked out from radiative
transfer calculations that include the process of synchrotron self-absorption.
The model is applied to explain the morphology of the radio emission deduced
from high-resolution VLBI imaging observations and the measured time evolution
of the total flux density at six frequencies. Both the light curves and the
morphology of the radio emission indicate that the magnetic field was strongly
amplified in the blast wave region shortly after the explosion, possibly via
the nonresonant regime of the cosmic-ray streaming instability operating in the
shock precursor. The turbulent magnetic field was not damped behind the shock
but carried along by the plasma flow in the downstream region. Cosmic-ray
protons were efficiently produced by diffusive shock acceleration at the blast
wave. We find that during the first ~8.5 years after the explosion, about 19%
of the total energy processed by the forward shock was converted to cosmic-ray
energy. However, the shock remained weakly modified by the cosmic-ray pressure.
The high magnetic field amplification implies that protons were rapidly
accelerated to energies well above 1 PeV. The results obtained for this
supernova support the scenario that massive stars exploding into their former

Effect of a combination of whole body vibration exercise and squat training on body balance, muscle power, and walking ability in the elderly
A randomized controlled trial was conducted to clarify the beneficial effect of whole body vibration (WBV) exercise plus squat training on body balance, muscle power, and walking ability in the elderly with knee osteoarthritis and/or spondylosis. Of 35 ambulatory patients (14 men and 21 women) who were recruited at our outpatient clinic, 28 (80.0%, 12 men and 16 women) participated in the trial. The subjects (mean age 72.4 years) were randomly divided into two groups (n=14 in each group), ie, a WBV exercise alone group and a WBV exercise plus squat training group. A 4-minute WBV exercise (frequency 20 Hz) was performed 2 days per week in both groups; squat training (20 times per minute) was added during the 4-minute WBV training session in the WBV exercise plus squat training group. The duration of the trial was 6 months. The exercise and training program was safe and well tolerated. WBV exercise alone improved indices of body balance and walking velocity from baseline values. However, WBV exercise plus squat training was more effective for improving tandem gait step number and chair-rising time compared with WBV exercise alone.
