Sobolev tests of goodness of fit of distributions on compact Riemannian manifolds

Classes of coordinate-invariant omnibus goodness-of-fit tests on compact Riemannian manifolds are proposed. The tests are based on Gin\'{e}'s Sobolev tests of uniformity. A condition for consistency is given. The tests are illustrated by an example on the rotation group SO(3)\mathit{SO}(3).Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/009053605000000697 in the Annals of Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aos/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Developing digital literacy in construction management education: a design thinking led approach

    Get PDF
Alongside the digital innovations in AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction) practice, are calls for a new type of digital literacy, including a new information-based literacy informed by creativity, critical analysis and the theoretical and practical knowledge of the construction profession. This paper explores the role of design thinking and the promotion of abductive problem situations when developing digital literacies in construction education. The impacts of advanced digital modelling technologies on construction management practices and education are investigated before an examination of design thinking, the role of abductive reasoning and the rise of normative models of design thinking workflows. The paper then explores the role that design thinking can play in the development of new digital literacies in contemporary construction studies. A three-part framework for the implementation of a design thinking approach to construction is presented. The paper closes with a discussion of the importance of models of design thinking for learning and knowledge production, emphasising how construction management education can benefit from them

A Circular Statistical Method for Extracting Rotation Measures

    Get PDF
We propose a new method for the extraction of Rotation Measure from spectral polarization data. The method is based on maximum likelihood analysis and takes into account the circular nature of the polarization data. The method is unbiased and statistically more efficient than the standard χ2\chi^2 procedure. We also find that the method is computationally much faster than the standard χ2\chi^2 procedure if the number of data points are very large.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

A network theoretic perspective of decision processes in complex construction projects

This paper proposes an approach to modelling and visualising decision processes in large complex construction projects by incorporating a network perspective. Computer modelling and visualisation of decision processes as social and task-entity networks makes possible the identification of key participants, critical tasks, latent networks, vulnerabilities and dynamics that impact upon complex decision situations. New advances in network theory can help reveal the ways in which social, organisational, political and technological relationships shape decision outcomes. By conceiving decision processes as a complex system and modelling this system using network-theoretic principles, it is possible to include a tremendous amount of information that has remained untapped by conventional qualitative, game-theoretic, and statistical approaches. This research contributes to the understanding of the strategic implications of decision processes as complex systems of interacting actors and problem tasks, and provides the technological means for supporting them. The approach has been verified through the development of an experimental network-theoretic system

Kollokationen im Lernerwörterbuch – Anspruch und Wirklichkeit

This article outlines an approach which explores how frequent lexical collocations can be identified for a representative extract of the German lexicon. It takes into account corpus-linguistic and phraseological criteria. The lexical foundation for this study is a corpus-driven and thematically-classified frequency dictionary of German. Additionally, the extensive DWDS corpus and a manual linguistic selection were used to identify typical collocations. Finally, after identifying 56 high-frequency collocations, four of the foremost learner dictionaries in the field of German as a foreign language were analyzed quantitatively for the presence of these collocations

    The English in Sydney

The most famous Englishman in Australian history, Captain James Cook, missed the entrance to Sydney Harbour during the night. He and fellow Englishman, Sir Joseph Banks, committed future explorers to the less promising site of Botany Bay.Nearly 20 years later, Sydney was founded by the British government as a penal colony. Although there was an established Aboriginal population, they remained on the periphery and were gradually reduced by disease and displacement, a fate suffered by others further out as exploration and settlement proceeded. In contrast to New York, which was established by the Dutch, or Boston, which became predominantly Irish, Sydney was seen from the beginning as an ‘English’ town. This was despite its growing connections with the Pacific and the presence among its soldiers and convicts of some Scots and many Irishmen. The majority of transported convicts were English, the Church of England was the established religious faith and Catholicism was strictly limited by official control

Copulae on products of compact Riemannian manifolds

    Get PDF
Abstract One standard way of considering a probability distribution on the unit n -cube, [0 , 1]n , due to Sklar (1959), is to decompose it into its marginal distributions and a copula, i.e. a probability distribution on [0 , 1]n with uniform marginals. The definition of copula was extended by Jones et al. (2014) to probability distributions on products of circles. This paper defines a copula as a probability distribution on a product of compact Riemannian manifolds that has uniform marginals. Basic properties of such copulae are established. Two fairly general constructions of copulae on products of compact homogeneous manifolds are given; one is based on convolution in the isometry group, the other using equivariant functions from compact Riemannian manifolds to their spaces of square integrable functions. Examples illustrate the use of copulae to analyse bivariate spherical data and bivariate rotational data.PostprintPeer reviewe
