Labor Productivity and Inter-Sectoral Reallocation of Labor in Singapore (1965-2002)
This paper investigates the impact of the shifts of labor across sectors on aggregate productivity growth through a decomposition of aggregate productivity growth in Singapore over the period 1965-2002. The static shift-share analysis is utilized to for this purpose. The results show that the shifts of labor paid off well in terms of their contribution to labor productivity especially for manufacturing in the 1985 era which was characterized by interventionist labor market policies of the government. On the other hand, the impact of labor shifts is negative in the post-1985 era which is characterized by a more liberalized labor market.shift-share analysis, Singapore, labor productivity
A comparative assessment of the Japanese (1991) and US (2007-2009) financial crises from a political economy perspective
This paper compares from a political economy perspective the financial crisis that broke out in Japan after 1991 and in the US during 2007-2009. Common features of both crises are the initial deregulation in the financial sector and the burst of the consequent asset price bubble. The institutional structure shaped by government interventions in Japan was unable to overcome the crisis and the subsequent long recession while the US government responded relatively quickly to the crisis. This paper comparatively evaluates the causes of the crises from the political economy perspective
Worldviews and Intergenerational Altruism: A Comparison of Turkish People Living in Turkey and Germany
In this paper, we examine and compare the impact of cultural differences on intergenerational altruism in Turkish people living in Turkey and in Germany, using the anthropological concept of worldview. Data were gathered from four surveys: nationwide surveys in Turkey and Germany, an online survey of Turkish people living in Germany, and a survey conducted as an experiment in a mosque attended by Turkish people in Germany. We find striking differences in parenting attitudes between Turkish people living in Turkey and those who live in Germany. Turkish people living in Germany tend to resemble German people in their parenting attitudes. We also find that differences in confidence attached to worldview beliefs, differences in religiosity, and the subjective probabilities attached to worldview beliefs (such as “All humans evolved from another living organism”) between Turkish people living in Turkey and those in Germany have statistically significant explanatory power for these differences in parenting attitudes
Worldviews and Intergenerational Altruism: Empirical Evidence for Germany
This paper studies the effects of differences in worldviews on parents? attitudes towards their children. We use unique German survey data containing questions on worldviews, religion, parental behavior, and socioeconomic variables. Our empirical evidence suggests that people with stronger confidence in strong disbelief in afterlife are more likely to have a tough love attitude towards their children. On the other hand, people who have strong disbelief in afterlife are less likely to have tough love attitude towards their children. Our results also indicate that people who belong to the Protestant and Catholic churches in Germany are less likely to have spoiling love attitude. On the other hand, people who have strong disbelief in afterlife are less likely to have tough love attitude towards their children
Rapid Economic Growth and Its Sustainability in China
China has recorded remarkable growth
rates for three and a half decades. Recently, the
annual growth rate has slowed down and is
projected to decline gradually to 5 % by 2030.
This article examines how high economic growth
was realized in the past and whether it can be
sustained in the future. In doing this, the paper
takes into consideration the projections about
future growth rates. The article emphasizes
that the main reason for the reduction in the
future growth rates is the unsustainability of the
currently high investment rates in the long run.
In addition, the diversification of financial
instruments for the already high savings is
important. Necessary improvements in the
financial sector are discussed in conjunction
with the long term sustainability of economic
growth rates

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey: Report of the 2007 Season
The 2007 season of the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project was directed by Nicholas Rauh of Purdue University. Dr. Hulya Caner of the Institute for Marine Science Management at Istanbul University supervised the work of our highland pollen trench excavations. Dr. Unal Akkemik of the Department of Forest Botany, School of Forestry, at Istanbul University conducted the dendrochronological research. These scholars were assisted by graduate student, Margaret Bloome, of Arizona University, and undergraduate students Phillip Ramirez (Purdue University), Aaron Fettgather (American University), Alexander Jillions (American University) and Charlotte Rose (Brown University). Due to permit complications the field season lasted one week, August 2-9, 2007. This season the team focused on paleo-environmental research in the Biçkici Highland behind Gazipasha. Our purpose was to obtain data to determine the age of the current cedar forest near the tree line of the Tauros Mts. as well as to obtain pollen data from trench excavations at the same elevation to determine the remote history of the forest. At the highland (yayla) village of Sügözü, the team, supervised by Hulya Caner, excavated an open pit to obtain 50 soil samples of remarkably remote age. Unal Akkemik was able to obtain 15 tree ring samples from old growth cedar, black pine, and juniper trees in the vicinity to demonstrate that the current highland forest cover is relatively young
The Impact of a Failed Coup d’État on Happiness, Life Satisfaction, and Trust: The Case of the Plot in Turkey on July 15, 2016
This paper examines the impact of the failed coup d’état attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016, on people’s happiness, life satisfaction, and trust and finds that the plot had a significant negative effect on all three variables. This paper is the first to show that coups d’état can have a significant adverse effect on people’s well-being, as in the case of terrorist attacks
Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project: Report of the 2004 Season
The priorities the season 2004 were to complete the envisioned maritime, geoarchaeological, and architectural surveys that had been organized for this particular grant cycle. Owing to the complexity of the 2004 season\u27s program, the various team components worked within a staggered schedule: the maritime and geoarchaeological surveys went first, followed by the architectural survey. The pedestrian survey basically worked to accommodate the needs of the other teams by working in and around them. Despite these limitations, the pedestrian team managed to conduct several days of \u27prospective\u27 survey in the Kaledran Canyon. The results of each of the team\u27s efforts are presented report in the sequence in which they occurred, maritime, geoarchaeological, architectural, and pedestrian
