Google Maps to collect spatial responses in a survey environment
This paper examines the use of Google Maps-based tools to collect spatial responses from participants during academic research surveys conducted via the Internet. Using two recent examples from the University of East Anglia it discusses the online survey context and how Google Maps was used, issues surrounding the technical implementation of these tools, processing and use of the collected data, and concludes with considerations for future research that might employ similar methods
The design and fabrication of microstrip omnidirectional array antennas for aerospace applications
A microstrip antenna design concept was developed that will provide quasi-omnidirectional radiation pattern characteristics about cylindrical and conical aerospace structures. L-band and S-band antenna arrays were designed, fabricated, and, in some cases, flight tested for rocket, satellite, and aircraft drone applications. Each type of array design is discussed along with a thermal cover design that was required for the sounding rocket applications
Barriers to and Facilitators of the Consumption of Animal-Based Protein-Rich Foods in Older Adults.
Protein intakes in the older population can be lower than recommended for good health, and while reasons for low protein intakes can be provided, little work has attempted to investigate these reasons in relation to actual intakes, and so identify those of likely greatest impact when designing interventions. Questionnaires assessing: usual consumption of meat, fish, eggs and dairy products; agreement/disagreement with reasons for the consumption/non-consumption of these foods; and several demographic and lifestyle characteristics; were sent to 1000 UK community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and over. In total, 351 returned questionnaires, representative of the UK older population for gender and age, were suitable for analysis. Different factors were important for consumption of the four food groups, but similarities were also found. These similarities likely reflect issues of particular concern to both the consumption of animal-based protein-rich foods and the consumption of these foods by older adults. Taken together, these findings suggest intakes to be explained by, and thus that strategies for increasing consumption should focus on: increasing liking/tastiness; improving convenience and the effort required for food preparation and consumption; minimizing spoilage and wastage; and improving perceptions of affordability or value for money; freshness; and the healthiness of protein-rich foods
Accretion-Inhibited Star Formation in the Warm Molecular Disk of the Green-valley Elliptical Galaxy NGC 3226
We present archival Spitzer photometry and spectroscopy, and Herschel
photometry, of the peculiar "Green Valley" elliptical galaxy NGC~3226. The
galaxy, which contains a low-luminosity AGN, forms a pair with NGC~3227, and is
shown to lie in a complex web of stellar and HI filaments. Imaging at 8 and
16m reveals a curved plume structure 3 kpc in extent, embedded within the
core of the galaxy, and coincident with the termination of a 30 kpc-long HI
tail. In-situ star formation associated with the IR plume is identified from
narrow-band HST imaging. The end of the IR-plume coincides with a warm
molecular hydrogen disk and dusty ring, containing 0.7-1.1 10
M detected within the central kpc. Sensitive upper limits to the
detection of cold molecular gas may indicate that a large fraction of the H
is in a warm state. Photometry, derived from the UV to the far-IR, shows
evidence for a low star formation rate of 0.04 M yr
averaged over the last 100 Myrs. A mid-IR component to the Spectral Energy
Distribution (SED) contributes 20 of the IR luminosity of the galaxy,
and is consistent with emission associated with the AGN. The current measured
star formation rate is insufficient to explain NGC3226's global UV-optical
"green" colors via the resurgence of star formation in a "red and dead" galaxy.
This form of "cold accretion" from a tidal stream would appear to be an
inefficient way to rejuvenate early-type galaxies, and may actually inhibit

Channeling Effects in Direct Dark Matter Detectors
The channeling of the ion recoiling after a collision with a WIMP changes the
ionization signal in direct detection experiments, producing a larger signal
than otherwise expected. We give estimates of the fraction of channeled
recoiling ions in NaI (Tl), Si and Ge crystals using analytic models produced
since the 1960's and 70's to describe channeling and blocking effects. We find
that the channeling fraction of recoiling lattice nuclei is smaller than that
of ions that are injected into the crystal and that it is strongly temperature

A Spitzer Unbiased Ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey
We carried out an unbiased, spectroscopic survey using the low-resolution
module of the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on board Spitzer targeting two 2.6
square arcminute regions in the GOODS-North field. IRS was used in spectral
mapping mode with 5 hours of effective integration time per pixel. One region
was covered between 14 and 21 microns and the other between 20 and 35 microns.
We extracted spectra for 45 sources. About 84% of the sources have reported
detections by GOODS at 24 microns, with a median F_nu(24um) ~ 100 uJy. All but
one source are detected in all four IRAC bands, 3.6 to 8 microns. We use a new
cross-correlation technique to measure redshifts and estimate IRS spectral
types; this was successful for ~60% of the spectra. Fourteen sources show
significant PAH emission, four mostly SiO absorption, eight present mixed
spectral signatures (low PAH and/or SiO) and two show a single line in
emission. For the remaining 17, no spectral features were detected. Redshifts
range from z ~ 0.2 to z ~ 2.2, with a median of 1. IR Luminosities are roughly
estimated from 24 microns flux densities, and have median values of 2.2 x
10^{11} L_{\odot} and 7.5 x 10^{11} L_{\odot} at z ~ 1 and z ~ 2 respectively.
This sample has fewer AGN than previous faint samples observed with IRS, which
we attribute to the fainter luminosities reached here.Comment: Published in Ap
Developing Multiplication Fact Fluency
Using specific components of three broad learning theories—cognitive, social-interactional, and behavioral—students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms were given multiplication fact fluency instruction over a period of five weeks for 10-15 minutes each day. Two different approaches were utilized with two distinct groups of students for the purpose of comparing different approaches to fluency development. Results indicate that students using a strategy-based approach for fluency development by means of instructional tasks emphasizing social-interactional and cognitive theories (particularly Bruner’s theory of Modes of Representation) increased multiplication fact fluency, with a greater degree of consistency, than students using a drill-based approach emphasizing behavioristic techniques such as repetition and memorization
Spatially Resolved Spitzer-IRS Spectroscopy of the Central Region of M82
We present high spatial resolution (~ 35 parsec) 5-38 um spectra of the
central region of M82, taken with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. From these
spectra we determined the fluxes and equivalent widths of key diagnostic
features, such as the [NeII]12.8um, [NeIII]15.5um, and H_2 S(1)17.03um lines,
and the broad mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in
six representative regions and analysed the spatial distribution of these lines
and their ratios across the central region. We find a good correlation of the
dust extinction with the CO 1-0 emission. The PAH emission follows closely the
ionization structure along the galactic disk. The observed variations of the
diagnostic PAH ratios across M82 can be explained by extinction effects, within
systematic uncertainties. The 16-18um PAH complex is very prominent, and its
equivalent width is enhanced outwards from the galactic plane. We interpret
this as a consequence of the variation of the UV radiation field. The EWs of
the 11.3um PAH feature and the H_2 S(1) line correlate closely, and we conclude
that shocks in the outflow regions have no measurable influence on the H_2
emission. The [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio is on average low at ~0.18, and shows little
variations across the plane, indicating that the dominant stellar population is
evolved (5 - 6 Myr) and well distributed. There is a slight increase of the
ratio with distance from the galactic plane of M82 which we attribute to a
decrease in gas density. Our observations indicate that the star formation rate
has decreased significantly in the last 5 Myr. The quantities of dust and
molecular gas in the central area of the galaxy argue against starvation and
for negative feedback processes, observable through the strong extra-planar

The HI and Ionized Gas Disk of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1144 = Arp 118: A Violently Interacting Galaxy with Peculiar Kinematics
We present observations of the distribution and kinematics of neutral and
ionized gas in NGC 1144, a galaxy that forms part of the Arp 118 system.
Ionized gas is present over a huge spread in velocity (1100 km/s) in the disk
of NGC 1144, but HI emission is detected over only 1/3 of this velocity range,
in an area that corresponds to the NW half of the disk. In the nuclear region
of NGC 1144, a jump in velocity in the ionized gas component of 600 km/s is
observed. Faint, narrow HI absorption lines are also detected against radio
sources in the SE part of the disk of NGC 1144, which includes regions of
massive star formation and a Seyfert nucleus. The peculiar HI distribution,
which is concentrated in the NW disk, seems to be the inverse of the molecular
distribution which is concentrated in the SE disk. Although this may partly be
the result of the destruction of HI clouds in the SE disk, there is
circumstantial evidence that the entire HI emission spectrum of NGC 1144 is
affected by a deep nuclear absorption line covering a range of 600 km/s, and is
likely blueshifted with respect to the nucleus. In this picture, a high
column-density HI stream is associated with the nuclear ionized gas velocity
discontinuity, and the absorption effectively masks any HI emission that would
