The two components of the SO(3)-character space of the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus 2
We use geometric techniques to explicitly find the topological structure of
the space of SO(3)-representations of the fundamental group of a closed surface
of genus 2 quotient by the conjugation action by SO(3). There are two
components of the space. We will describe the topology of both components and
describe the corresponding SU(2)-character spaces by parametrizing them by
spherical triangles. There is the sixteen to one branch-covering for each
component, and the branch locus is a union of 2-spheres or 2-tori. Along the
way, we also describe the topology of both spaces. We will later relate this
result to future work into higher-genus cases and the SL(3,R)-representations
Generalizations of Tucker-Fan-Shashkin lemmas
Tucker and Ky Fan's lemma are combinatorial analogs of the Borsuk-Ulam
theorem (BUT). In 1996, Yu. A. Shashkin proved a version of Fan's lemma, which
is a combinatorial analog of the odd mapping theorem (OMT). We consider
generalizations of these lemmas for BUT-manifolds, i.e. for manifolds that
satisfy BUT. Proofs rely on a generalization of the OMT and on a lemma about
the doubling of manifolds with boundaries that are BUT-manifolds.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE LIMITING PROBABILITY VECTORS IN STOCHASTIC PROCESSES WITH MULTIPLE TRANSITION MATRICES
Concepts associated with stochastic process containing multiple transition matricies are discussed. It is proved that under certain conditions, a process with m transition matrices has m unique limiting probability vectors. This result extends the notion of discrete Markov processes to problems with intrayear and interyear dynamics. PAN AIR: A computer program for predicting subsonic or supersonic linear potential flows about arbitrary configurations using a higher order panel method. Volume 2: User's manual (version 3.0)
A comprehensive description of user problem definition for the PAN AIR (Panel Aerodynamics) system is given. PAN AIR solves the 3-D linear integral equations of subsonic and supersonic flow. Influence coefficient methods are used which employ source and doublet panels as boundary surfaces. Both analysis and design boundary conditions can be used. This User's Manual describes the information needed to use the PAN AIR system. The structure and organization of PAN AIR are described, including the job control and module execution control languages for execution of the program system. The engineering input data are described, including the mathematical and physical modeling requirements. Version 3.0 strictly applies only to PAN AIR version 3.0. The major revisions include: (1) inputs and guidelines for the new FDP module (which calculates streamlines and offbody points); (2) nine new class 1 and class 2 boundary conditions to cover commonly used modeling practices, in particular the vorticity matching Kutta condition; (3) use of the CRAY solid state Storage Device (SSD); and (4) incorporation of errata and typo's together with additional explanation and guidelines

The role of cardiac troponin T quantity and function in cardiac development and dilated cardiomyopathy
Background: Hypertrophic (HCM) and dilated (DCM) cardiomyopathies results from sarcomeric protein mutations, including cardiac troponin T (cTnT, TNNT2). We determined whether TNNT2 mutations cause cardiomyopathies by altering cTnT function or quantity; whether the severity of DCM is related to the ratio of mutant to wildtype cTnT; whether Ca2+ desensitization occurs in DCM; and whether absence of cTnT impairs early embryonic cardiogenesis. Methods and Findings: We ablated Tnnt2 to produce heterozygous Tnnt2+/ mice, and crossbreeding produced homozygous null Tnnt2-/-embryos. We also generated transgenic mice overexpressing wildtype (TGWT) or DCM mutant (TGK210Δ) Tnnt2. Crossbreeding produced mice lacking one allele of Tnnt2, but carrying wildtype (Tnnt2+/-/TGWT) or mutant (Tnnt2+/-/TGK210Δ) transgenes. Tnnt2+/-mice relative to wildtype had significantly reduced transcript (0.82 ± 0.06 [SD] vs. 1.00 ± 0.12 arbitrary units; p = 0.025), but not protein (1.01 ± 0.20 vs. 1.00 ± 0.13 arbitrary units; p = 0.44). Tnnt2+/-mice had normal hearts (histology, mass, left ventricular end diastolic diameter [LVEDD], fractional shortening [FS]). Moreover, whereas Tnnt2+/-/ TGK210Δ mice had severe DCM, TGK210Δ mice had only mild DCM (FS 18 ± 4 vs. 29 ± 7%; p < 0.01). The difference in severity of DCM may be attributable to a greater ratio of mutant to wildtype Tnnt2 transcript in Tnnt2+/-/TGK210Δ relative to TGK210Δ mice (2.42±0.08, p = 0.03). Tnnt2+/-/TGK210Δ muscle showed Ca2+ desensitization (pCa50 = 5.34 ± 0.08 vs. 5.58 ± 0.03 at sarcomere length 1.9 μm. p<0.01), but no difference in maximum force generation. Day 9.5 Tnnt2-/-embryos had normally looped hearts, but thin ventricular walls, large pericardial effusions, noncontractile hearts, and severely disorganized sarcomeres. Conclusions: Absence of one Tnnt2 allele leads to a mild deficit in transcript but not protein, leading to a normal cardiac phenotype. DCM results from abnormal function of a mutant protein, which is associated with myocyte Ca2+ desensitization. The severity of DCM depends on the ratio of mutant to wildtype Tnnt2 transcript. cTnT is essential for sarcomere formation, but normal embryonic heart looping occurs without contractile activity. © 2008 Ahmad et al
Unidirectional Distributed Acoustic Reflection Transducers for Quantum Applications
Recent significant advances in coupling superconducting qubits to acoustic
wave resonators has led to demonstrations of quantum control of surface and
bulk acoustic resonant modes as well Wigner tomography of quantum states in
these modes. These advances were achieved through the efficient coupling
afforded by piezoelectric materials combined with GHz-frequency acoustic
Fabry-Perot cavities. Quantum control of itinerant surface acoustic waves
appears in reach, but is challenging due to the limitations of conventional
transducers in the appropriate GHz-frequency band. In particular, GHz-frequency
unidirectional transducers would provide an important addition to the desired
quantum toolbox, promising unit efficiency with directional control over the
surface acoustic wave emission pattern. Here we report the design, fabrication
and experimental characterization of unidirectional distributed acoustic
reflection transducers (DARTs) demonstrating a high transduction frequency of
4.8 GHz with a peak directivity larger than 25 dB and a directivity greater
than 15 dB over a bandwidth of 17 MHz. A numerical model reproduces the main
features of the transducer response quite well, with ten adjustable parameters
(most of which are constrained by geometric and physical considerations). This
represents a significant step towards quantum control of itinerant quantum

Management of Intracranial Meningiomas Using Keyhole Techniques
BACKGROUND: Keyhole craniotomies are increasingly being used for lesions of the skull base. Here we review our recent experience with these approaches for resection of intracranial meningiomas.
METHODS: Clinical and operative data were gathered on all patients treated with keyhole approaches by the senior author from January 2012 to June 2013. Thirty-one meningiomas were resected in 27 patients, including 9 supratentorial, 5 anterior fossa, 7 middle fossa, 6 posterior fossa, and 4 complex skull base tumors. Twenty-nine tumors were WHO Grade I, and 2 were Grade II.
RESULTS: The mean operative time was 8 hours, 22 minutes (range, 2:55-16:14) for skull-base tumors, and 4 hours, 27 minutes (range, 1:45-7:13) for supratentorial tumors. Simpson Resection grades were as follows: Grade I = 8, II = 8, III = 1, IV = 15, V = 0. The median postoperative hospital stay was 4 days (range, 1-20 days). In the 9 patients presenting with some degree of visual loss, 7 saw improvement or complete resolution. In the 6 patients presenting with cranial nerve palsies, 4 experienced improvement or resolution of the deficit postoperatively. Four patients experienced new neurologic deficits, all of which were improved or resolved at the time of the last follow-up. Technical aspects and surgical nuances of these approaches for management of intracranial meningiomas are discussed.
CONCLUSIONS: With careful preoperative evaluation, keyhole approaches can be utilized singly or in combination to manage meningiomas in a wide variety of locations with satisfactory results
