The article speaks on the uniqueness of field and theoretical work done by a great ethnomusicologist Klyment Kvitka. The author presents the goal of the present edition of the anthology, which is to edit, to remove mistakes of the previous edition and to make a critical-textological analysis of the work.     Creative thinking as an innovative approach to tackle nutrition in times of economic crises

    An interactive session ‘Let’s cook something up’ organised by the European Nutrition Leadership Platform (ENLP – www.enlp.eu.com) during the 20th International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) organised in Granada, Spain, showed how an innovative approach to parallel sessions can be a meaningful tool in formulating solutions to current nutritional challenges. The key objective of the session was to provide a proof-of-concept that even in the context of a large conference such as the ICN, with approximately 4250 attendants, one can utilise innovative and active learning techniques to get a message across and work towards solutions rather than using the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ method. There is a huge potential for innovation at these types of conferences in creating an environment that encourages interaction by breaking down the boundaries of authority and placing the focus on sharing knowledge with enjoyment.     Measuring and modelling the energy cost of reconfiguration in sensor networks [forthcoming]

    As Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) must operate for long periods on a limited power budget, estimating the energy cost of software operations is critical. Contemporary reconfiguration approaches for WSN allow for software evolution at various granularities; from reflashing of a complete software image, through replacement of complete applications, to the reconfiguration of individual software components. This paper contributes a generic model for measuring and modelling the energy cost of reconfiguration in WSN. We validate that this model is accurate in the face of different hardware platforms, software stacks and software encapsulation approaches. We have embedded this model in the LooCI middleware, resulting in the first energy aware reconfigurable component model for sensor networks. We evaluate our approach using two real-world WSN applications and demonstrate that our model predicts the energy cost of reconfiguration with 93% accuracy. Using this model we demonstrate that selecting the most appropriate software modularisation approach is key to minimising energy consumption

    Prior selfing and the selfing syndrome in animals: an experimental approach in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi

    Inbreeding species of hermaphroditic animals practising copulation have been characterized by few copulations, no waiting time (the time that an isolated individual waits for a partner before initiating reproduction compared with paired individuals) and limited inbreeding (self-fertilization) depression. This syndrome, which has never been fully studied before in any species, is analysed here in the highly selfing freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi. We conducted an experiment under laboratory conditions over two generations (G1 and G2) using snails sampled from two populations (100 individuals per population). G1 individuals were either isolated or paired once a week (potentially allowing for crosses), and monitored during 29 weeks for growth, fecundity and survival. Very few copulations were observed in paired snails, and there was a positive correlation in copulatory activity (e.g. number of copulations) between the male and female sexual roles. The waiting time was either null or negative, meaning that isolated individuals initiated reproduction before paired ones. G2 offspring did not differ in hatching rate and survival (to 28 days) between treatments, but offspring from paired individuals grew faster than those from isolated individuals. On the whole, the self-fertilization depression was extremely low in both populations. Another important result is that paired G1 individuals began laying (selfed) eggs several weeks prior to initiating copulation: this is the first characterization of prior selfing (selfing initiated prior to any outcrossing) in a hermaphroditic animal. A significant population effect was observed on most traits studied. Our results are discussed with regard to the maintenance of low outcrossing rates in highly inbreeding specie

    Bond of NSM FRP strengthened concrete: round robin test initiative

    Despite the extensive research that has been conducted on the debonding behaviour of FRP strengthening systems, no standard methodology has been yet established on its experimental characterization. In this context, to assess the performance and reliability of small scale testing on NSM (near surface mounted) FRP strengthening systems, an experimental program was carried out on a series of nine NSM FRP strengthening systems, in the framework of an international Round Robin Testing (RRT). Eleven laboratories and seven manufacturers and suppliers participated in this extensive international exercise, which regarded both NSM and EBR FRP strengthening systems. Test results obtained for the NSM systems by the participating laboratories are discussed and compared in this paper to investigate the feasibility of the adopted single/double pulling shear test method, to investigate the mechanism of bond between NSM FRP reinforcement and concrete, and to investigate the level of variability obtained between the participating laboratories testing the same material batches. It is concluded that the tested variants in the adopted single/double shear pulling test have a significant influence, stressing the importance of the level of detail of standardized test protocols for bond verification. On overall, given the variants included in this study, the obtained variation in bond stress-slip behaviour between the laboratories remained fairly limited.The authors wish to acknowledge the financial assistance of the European Union for the Marie Curie Research Training Network En-Core, and the support of TG 9.3 of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib).     We present a new approximation scheme for the centrifugal term to obtain a quasi-exact analytical bound state solutions within the framework of the position-dependent effective mass radial Klein-Gordon equation with the scalar and vector Hulth\'{e}n potentials in any arbitrary DD dimension and orbital angular momentum quantum numbers l.l. The Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method is used in the calculations. The relativistic real energy levels and corresponding eigenfunctions for the bound states with different screening parameters have been given in a closed form. It is found that the solutions in the case of constant mass and in the case of s-wave (l=0l=0) are identical with the ones obtained in literature.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    Nitric oxide function in atherosclerosis

    Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process in the intima of conduit arteries, which disturbs the endothelium-dependent regulation of the vascular tone by the labile liposoluble radical nitric oxide (NO) formed by the constitutive endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). This defect predisposes to coronary vasospasm and cardiac ischaemia, with anginal pain as the typical clinical manifestation. It is now appreciated that endothelial dysfunction is an early event in atherogenesis and that it may also involve the microcirculation, in which atherosclerotic lesions do not develop. On the other hand, the inflammatory environment in atherosclerotic plaques may result in the expression of the inducible NO synthase (iNOS) isozyme. Whether the dysfunction in endothelial NO production is causal to, or the result of, atherosclerotic lesion formation is still highly debated. Most evidence supports the hypothesis that constitutive endothelial NO release protects against atherogenesis e.g. by preventing smooth muscle cell proliferation and leukocyte adhesion. Nitric oxide generated by the inducible isozyme may be beneficial by replacing the failing endothelial production but excessive release may damage the vascular wall cells, especially in combination with reactive oxygen intermediates

    Tissue-Informative Mechanism for Wearable Non-invasive Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring

    Accurate continuous direct measurement of the blood pressure is currently available thru direct invasive methods via intravascular needles, and is mostly limited to use during surgical procedures or in the intensive care unit (ICU). Non-invasive methods that are mostly based on auscultation or cuff oscillometric principles do provide relatively accurate measurement of blood pressure. However, they mostly involve physical inconveniences such as pressure or stress on the human body. Here, we introduce a new non-invasive mechanism of tissue-informative measurement, where an experimental phenomenon called subcutaneous tissue pressure equilibrium is revealed and related for application in detection of absolute blood pressure. A prototype was experimentally verified to provide an absolute blood pressure measurement by wearing a watch-type measurement module that does not cause any discomfort. This work is supposed to contribute remarkably to the advancement of continuous non-invasive mobile devices for 24-7 daily-life ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring.open
