A third HI 21-cm absorption system in the sight-line of MG J0414+0534: A redshift for Object X?
We report the detection of a third HI 21-cm absorber in the sight-line
towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534 (4C +05.19). In addition to the
absorption at the host redshift and in the z=0.96 gravitational lens, we find,
through a decimetre-wave spectral scan towards this source, strong absorption
at z=0.38. We believe this may be associated with "Object X", an additional
feature apparent in the field of the lensing galaxy and lensed images, on the
basis of its close proximity to the quasar images and the possible detection of
the [OIII] doublet in a published optical spectrum. If real, the strength of
the [OIII] emission would suggest the presence of an active galactic nucleus,
or a gas-rich galaxy undergoing rapid star formation, either of which is
consistent with the strong outflows apparent in the 21-cm spectrum. Although
this is the strongest intervening 21-cm absorber yet found, simultaneous
observations failed to detect any of the 18-cm OH lines at the 21-cm redshift.
This suggests that, as for the lensing galaxy, this is not the primary location
of the intervening material responsible for the very red colour of MG

A fourth HI 21-cm absorption system in the sight-line of MG J0414+0534: a record for intervening absorbers
We report the detection of a strong HI 21-cm absorption system at z=0.5344,
as well as a candidate system at z=0.3389, in the sight-line towards the z=2.64
quasar MG J0414+0534. This, in addition to the absorption at the host redshift
and the other two intervening absorbers, takes the total to four (possibly
five). The previous maximum number of 21-cm absorbers detected along a single
sight-line is two and so we suspect that this number of gas-rich absorbers is
in some way related to the very red colour of the background source. Despite
this, no molecular gas (through OH absorption) has yet been detected at any of
the 21-cm redshifts, although, from the population of 21-cm absorbers as a
whole, there is evidence for a weak correlation between the atomic line
strength and the optical--near-infrared colour. In either case, the fact that
so many gas-rich galaxies (likely to be damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems)
have been found along a single sight-line towards a highly obscured source may
have far reaching implications for the population of faint galaxies not
detected in optical surveys, a possibility which could be addressed through
future wide-field absorption line surveys with the Square Kilometre Array.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letter

Exciton-photon coupling in a ZnSe based microcavity fabricated using epitaxial liftoff
We report the observation of strong exciton-photon coupling in a ZnSe based
microcavity fabricated using epitaxial liftoff. Molecular beam epitaxial grown
ZnSe/ZnCdSe quantum wells with a one wavelength optical length
at the exciton emission were transferred to a SiO/TaO mirror with a
reflectance of 96% to form finesse matched microcavities. Analysis of our angle
resolved transmission spectra reveals key features of the strong coupling
regime: anticrossing with a normal mode splitting of at ;
composite evolution of the lower and upper polaritons; and narrowing of the
lower polariton linewidth near resonance. The heavy hole exciton oscillator
strength per quantum well is also deduced to be .Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
HI and OH absorption in the lensing galaxy of MG J0414+0534
We report the detection of \HI 21-cm absorption in the early-type
lensing galaxy towards MG J0414+0534 with the Green Bank Telescope. The
absorption, with total , is resolved into two strong components, probably due to the two
strongest lens components, which are separated by 0.4\arcsec. Unlike the other
three lenses which have been detected in \HI, J0414+0534 does not exhibit
strong OH absorption, giving a OH/\HI column density ratio of N_{\rm
OH}/N_{\rm HI}\lapp10^{-6} (for K, K and
). This underabundance of molecular gas may indicate
that the extreme optical--near-IR colour () along the line-of-sight
is not due to the lens. We therefore suggest that despite the strong upper
limits on molecular absorption at the quasar redshift, as traced by millimetre

High velocity clouds in the Galactic All Sky Survey I. Catalogue
We present a catalogue of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) from the Galactic All
Sky Survey (GASS) of southern-sky neutral hydrogen, which has 57 mK sensitivity
and 1 km/s velocity resolution and was obtained with the Parkes Telescope. Our
catalogue has been derived from the stray-radiation corrected second release of
GASS. We describe the data and our method of identifying HVCs and analyse the
overall properties of the GASS population. We catalogue a total of 1693 HVCs at
declinations < 0 deg, including 1111 positive velocity HVCs and 582 negative
velocity HVCs. Our catalogue also includes 295 anomalous velocity clouds
(AVCs). The cloud line-widths of our HVC population have a median FWHM of ~19
km/s, which is lower than found in previous surveys. The completeness of our
catalogue is above 95% based on comparison with the HIPASS catalogue of HVCs,
upon which we improve with an order of magnitude in spectral resolution. We
find 758 new HVCs and AVCs with no HIPASS counterpart. The GASS catalogue will
shed an unprecedented light on the distribution and kinematic structure of
southern-sky HVCs, as well as delve further into the cloud populations that

A search for 21 cm HI absorption in AT20G compact radio galaxies
We present results from a search for 21 cm associated HI absorption in a
sample of 29 radio sources selected from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey.
Observations were conducted using the Australia Telescope Compact Array
Broadband Backend, with which we can simultaneously look for 21 cm absorption
in a redshift range of 0.04 < z < 0.08, with a velocity resolution of 7 km/s .
In preparation for future large-scale H I absorption surveys we test a
spectral-line finding method based on Bayesian inference. We use this to assign
significance to our detections and to determine the best-fitting number of
spectral-line components. We find that the automated spectral-line search is
limited by residuals in the continuum, both from the band-pass calibration and
spectral-ripple subtraction, at spectral-line widths of \Deltav_FWHM > 103 km/s
. Using this technique we detect two new absorbers and a third, previously
known, yielding a 10 per cent detection rate. Of the detections, the
spectral-line profiles are consistent with the theory that we are seeing
different orientations of the absorbing gas, in both the host galaxy and
circumnuclear disc, with respect to our line-of-sight to the source. In order
to spatially resolve the spectral-line components in the two new detections,
and so verify this conclusion, we require further high-resolution 21 cm

An automorphism of a group is said to be central if
commutes with every inner automorphism of . We construct a family of
non-special finite -groups having abelian automorphism groups. These groups
provide counter examples to a conjecture of A. Mahalanobis [Israel J. Math.,
{\bf 165} (2008), 161 - 187]. We also construct a family of finite -groups
having non-abelian automorphism groups and all automorphisms central. This
solves a problem of I. Malinowska [Advances in group theory, Aracne Editrice,

GRB Energetics in the Swift Era
We examine the rest frame energetics of 76 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with known
redshift that were detected by the Swift spacecraft and monitored by the
satellite's X-ray Telescope (XRT). Using the bolometric fluence values
estimated in Butler et al. 2007b and the last XRT observation for each event,
we set a lower limit the their collimation corrected energy Eg and find that a
68% of our sample are at high enough redshift and/or low enough fluence to
accommodate a jet break occurring beyond the last XRT observation and still be
consistent with the pre-Swift Eg distribution for long GRBs. We find that
relatively few of the X-ray light curves for the remaining events show evidence
for late-time decay slopes that are consistent with that expected from post jet
break emission. The breaks in the X-ray light curves that do exist tend to be
shallower and occur earlier than the breaks previously observed in optical
light curves, yielding a Eg distribution that is far lower than the pre-Swift
distribution. If these early X-ray breaks are not due to jet effects, then a
small but significant fraction of our sample have lower limits to their
collimation corrected energy that place them well above the pre-Swift Eg
distribution. Either scenario would necessitate a much wider post-Swift Eg
distribution for long cosmological GRBs compared to the narrow standard energy
deduced from pre-Swift observations. We note that almost all of the pre-Swift
Eg estimates come from jet breaks detected in the optical whereas our sample is
limited entirely to X-ray wavelengths, furthering the suggestion that the
