Simplified R-Symmetry Breaking and Low-Scale Gauge Mediation
We argue that some of the difficulties in constructing realistic models of
low-scale gauge mediation are artifacts of the narrow set of models that have
been studied. In particular, much attention has been payed to the scenario in
which the Goldstino superfield in an O'Raifeartaigh model is responsible for
both supersymmetry breaking and R-symmetry breaking. In such models, the
competing problems of generating sufficiently massive gauginos while preserving
an acceptably light gravitino can be quite challenging. We show that by sharing
the burdens of breaking supersymmetry and R-symmetry with a second field, these
problems are easily solved even within the O'Raifeartaigh framework. We present
explicit models realizing minimal gauge mediation with a gravitino mass in the
eV range that are both calculable and falsifiable.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures, references added, minor change
Capability of Biowaste Composite of High Density Polythene with Egg Shell and Wood Sawdust for Sorption of Heavy Metals in Industrial Waste Water
The health hazards posed by heavy metals in water and the need to mitigate the hazards have attracteda flurry of research interests on the technologies and methods of removing them from water. The industrial waste waterfrom a gutter within the neighbourhood of the Delta Shopping Mall in Effurun was used to test the heavy metal sorptioncapacity of the waste high density polythene and biowaste composites compounded by the author using a locallyconstructed extruder. Some of the physico – chemical properties of the waste water determined with PH Kent meter (model7020) and Hach conductivity meter (C0150) where within WHO acceptable limits while some were not. The metalconcentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer(Perkin Elmer Absorption Analyst 400 model)The Composite of 2:1.5:0.5 (HDPE: saw dust: egg shell) sorbed the highest concentration of the metals ( 0.168mg/L, Fe;0.072mg/L, Ni and 0.082mg/L, Cr than the other composites of 1.5: 1: 1.5 and 2:1:1 except Cd while the composite, 2:1:1sorbed the least concentration of metals( 0.061mg/L, Fe; 0.044mg/L, Ni; 0.071mg/L, Cr and 0.002mg/L, Cd during thefirst 24 hours of sorption exposure. Chromium was the most sorbed metal, 97.6% while cadmium was the least, 20.0%.There was no systematic pattern of variation for metal absorption in the next 24 hours due probably to the blocking of thepore sites during the first twenty four hours of sorption exposure. The composite, 2:1.5:0.5 exhibited a good potential asan economic heavy metal sorbent. Keywords: Sorption capacity, heavy metals, composites, waste water, extrude
Cosmological vacuum selection and metastable susy breaking
We study gauge mediation in a wide class of O'Raifeartaigh type models where
supersymmetry breaking metastable vacuum is created by gravity and/or quantum
corrections. We examine their thermal evolution in the early universe and the
conditions under which the susy breaking vacuum can be selected. It is
demonstrated that thermalization typically makes the metastable supersymmetry
breaking cosmologically disfavoured but this is not always the case. Initial
conditions with the spurion displaced from the symmetric thermal minimum and a
small coupling to the messenger sector can result in the realization of the
susy breaking vacuum even if the reheating temperature is high. We show that
this can be achieved without jeopardizing the low energy phenomenology. In
addition, we have found that deforming the models by a supersymmetric mass term
for messengers in such a way that the susy breaking minimum and the susy
preserving minima are all far away from the origin does not change the
conclusions. The basic observations are expected to hold also in the case of
models with an anomalous U(1) group.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, plain Latex, journal versio
Fire extinguishing strength of the combustion product of wood saw dust (ash)
Forty saw dust samples from four mature hard wood plants grown in southwestern part of Nigeria were analyzed for their ash contents, moisture contents, metallic contents and hence the fire extinguishing strength of the saw dust ash by classical and instrumental methods of analyses. Mahogany (Khaya ivorensis) wood saw dust ash had the highest mean metallic content (5.989±2.51ppm) followed by Opepe (Sarcocephalus latifolius) , 4.704±0.21ppm while Poro poro (Sorghum bicolour) wood ash had the least metallic content (1.611±0.48ppm). Mahogany also had the highest mean moisture content (2.6615±0.64) while Opepe had the least moisture content (0.9362±0.45). The fire extinguishing strength of Mahogany was the highest, and had a positive correlation with its metallic content as depicted by their correlation coefficient (0.850). Poro poro had the least fire extinguishing strength. The comparison of the extinguishing strength of wood saw dust samples and the commonly used ABC fire extinguisher showed that ABC fire extinguisher has more extinguishing strength than the wood saw dust ash. Hence, improvement on the extinguishing strength of the saw dust ash is necessary. © JASE
Soft Spectrum in Yukawa-Gauge Mediation
We introduce a model independent parametrization for a subclass of gauge
mediated theories, which we refer to as Yukawa-gauge mediation. Within this
formalism we study the resulting soft masses in the visible spectrum. We find
general expressions for the gaugino and scalar masses. Under generic
conditions, the gaugino mass is screened, vanishing at first order in the SUSY
breaking scale.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor corrections, published versio
Bounds on 4D Conformal and Superconformal Field Theories
We derive general bounds on operator dimensions, central charges, and OPE
coefficients in 4D conformal and N=1 superconformal field theories. In any CFT
containing a scalar primary phi of dimension d we show that crossing symmetry
of implies a completely general lower bound on the central
charge c >= f_c(d). Similarly, in CFTs containing a complex scalar charged
under global symmetries, we bound a combination of symmetry current two-point
function coefficients tau^{IJ} and flavor charges. We extend these bounds to
N=1 superconformal theories by deriving the superconformal block expansions for
four-point functions of a chiral superfield Phi and its conjugate. In this case
we derive bounds on the OPE coefficients of scalar operators appearing in the
Phi x Phi* OPE, and show that there is an upper bound on the dimension of Phi*
Phi when dim(Phi) is close to 1. We also present even more stringent bounds on
c and tau^{IJ}. In supersymmetric gauge theories believed to flow to
superconformal fixed points one can use anomaly matching to explicitly check
whether these bounds are satisfied.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figures; V2: small corrections and clarification
A microscopic theory of gauge mediation
We construct models of indirect gauge mediation where the dynamics
responsible for breaking supersymmetry simultaneously generates a weakly
coupled subsector of messengers. This provides a microscopic realization of
messenger gauge mediation where the messenger and hidden sector fields are
unified into a single sector. The UV theory is SQCD with massless and massive
quarks plus singlets, and at low energies it flows to a weakly coupled quiver
gauge theory. One node provides the primary source of supersymmetry breaking,
which is then transmitted to the node giving rise to the messenger fields.
These models break R-symmetry spontaneously, produce realistic gaugino and
sfermion masses, and give a heavy gravitino.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures, accepted to JHEP for publicatio
Discovery Potential for Low-Scale Gauge Mediation at Early LHC
Low-scale gauge-mediated supersymmetry(SUSY)-breaking (GMSB) models with
gravitino mass m_{3/2}<16 eV are attractive, since there are no flavor and
cosmological problems. In this paper, we thoroughly study the collider signal
in the case that the next-to-lightest SUSY particle is the bino or slepton and
investigate the discovery potential of the LHC. Our result is applicable to a
wider class of GMSB models other than the minimal GMSB models and we pay
particular attention to realistic experimental setups. We also apply our
analysis to the minimal GMSB models with a metastable SUSY-breaking vacuum and
we show, by requiring sufficient stability of the SUSY-breaking vacuum, these
models can be tested at an early stage of the LHC.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures.Texts in section 3.2.2 and 3.2.4 are revised.

General Messenger Gauge Mediation
We discuss theories of gauge mediation in which the hidden sector consists of
two subsectors which are weakly coupled to each other. One sector is made up of
messengers and the other breaks supersymmetry. Each sector by itself may be
strongly coupled. We provide a unifying framework for such theories and discuss
their predictions in different settings. We show how this framework
incorporates all known models of messengers. In the case of weakly-coupled
messengers interacting with spurions through the superpotential, we prove that
the sfermion mass-squared is positive, and furthermore, that there is a lower
bound on the ratio of the sfermion mass to the gaugino mass.Comment: 37 pages; minor change
SU(7) Unification of SU(3)_C*SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L}
We propose the SUSY SU(7) unification of the SU(3)_C* SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L}
model. Such unification scenario has rich symmetry breaking chains in a
five-dimensional orbifold. We study in detail the SUSY SU(7) symmetry breaking
into SU(3)_C* SU(4)_W* U(1)_{B-L} by boundary conditions in a Randall-Sundrum
background and its AdS/CFT interpretation. We find that successful gauge
coupling unification can be achieved in our scenario. Gauge unification favors
low left-right and unification scales with tree-level \sin^2\theta_W=0.15. We
use the AdS/CFT dual of the conformal supersymmetry breaking scenario to break
the remaining N=1 supersymmetry. We employ AdS/CFT to reproduce the NSVZ
formula and obtain the structure of the Seiberg duality in the strong coupling
region for 3/2N_c<N_F<3N_C. We show that supersymmetry is indeed broken in the
conformal supersymmetry breaking scenario with a vanishing singlet vacuum
expectation value.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure
