Shutters and slats for the integral sunshade of an optical reception antenna
Optical reception antennas used at a small Sun-Earth-probe angle (small solar elongation E) require sunshading to prevent intolerable scattering of light from the surface of the primary mirror. An integral sunshade consisting of hexagonal tubes aligned with the segmentation of a large mirror was proposed for use down to E = 12 degrees. For smaller angles, asterisk-shaped vanes inserted into the length of the hexagonal tubes would allow operation down to about 6 degrees with a fixed obscuration of 3.6 percent. Two alternative methods are investigated to extend the usefulness of the integral sunshade to smaller angles by adding either variable-area shutters to block the tube corners that admit off-axis sunlight or by inserting slats (partial vanes) down the full length of some tubes. Slats are effective for most operations down to 6 degrees, and obscure only 1.2 percent. For E between 10.75 and 12 degrees, shutters cause even less obscuration
Melhoramento genético em abelhas. II.

Charged Rotating Black Holes on a 3-Brane
We study exact stationary and axisymmetric solutions describing charged
rotating black holes localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld.
The charges of the black holes are considered to be of two types, the first
being an induced tidal charge that appears as an imprint of nonlocal
gravitational effects from the bulk space and the second is a usual electric
charge arising due to a Maxwell field trapped on the brane. We assume a special
ansatz for the metric on the brane taking it to be of the Kerr-Schild form and
show that the Kerr-Newman solution of ordinary general relativity in which the
electric charge is superceded by a tidal charge satisfies a closed system of
the effective gravitational field equations on the brane. It turns out that the
negative tidal charge may provide a mechanism for spinning up the black hole so
that its rotation parameter exceeds its mass. This is not allowed in the
framework of general relativity. We also find a new solution that represents a
rotating black hole on the brane carrying both charges. We show that for a
rapid enough rotation the combined influence of the rotational dynamics and the
local bulk effects of the "squared" energy momentum tensor on the brane distort
the horizon structure of the black hole in such a way that it can be thought of
as composed of non-uniformly rotating null circles with growing radii from the
equatorial plane to the poles. We finally study the geodesic motion of test
particles in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole with tidal charge.
We show that the effects of negative tidal charge tend to increase the horizon
radius, as well as the radii of the limiting photon orbit, the innermost bound
and the innermost stable circular orbits for both direct and retrograde motions
of the particles.Comment: RevTeX 4, 33 pages, 4 figures, new references adde

Rotating Black Holes in Higher Dimensions with a Cosmological Constant
We present the metric for a rotating black hole with a cosmological constant
and with arbitrary angular momenta in all higher dimensions. The metric is
given in both Kerr-Schild and Boyer-Lindquist form. In the Euclidean-signature
case, we also obtain smooth compact Einstein spaces on associated S^{D-2}
bundles over S^2, infinitely many for each odd D\ge 5. Applications to string
theory and M-theory are indicated.Comment: 8 pages, Latex. Short version, with more compact notation, of

Introduction
What are the strategies, modalities and aspirations of island-based, stateless nationalist and regionalist parties in the twenty-first century? Political independence is now easier to achieve, even by the smallest of territories; yet, it is not so likely to be pursued with any vigour by the world's various persisting sub-national (and mainly island) jurisdictions. Theirs is a pursuit of different expressions of sub-national autonomy, stopping short of independence. And yet, a number of independence referenda are scheduled, including one looming in Scotland in autumn 2014
Milky Way Mass Models and MOND
Using the Tuorla-Heidelberg model for the mass distribution of the Milky Way,
I determine the rotation curve predicted by MOND. The result is in good
agreement with the observed terminal velocities interior to the solar radius
and with estimates of the Galaxy's rotation curve exterior thereto. There are
no fit parameters: given the mass distribution, MOND provides a good match to
the rotation curve. The Tuorla-Heidelberg model does allow for a variety of
exponential scale lengths; MOND prefers short scale lengths in the range 2.0 to
2.5 kpc. The favored value of scale length depends somewhat on the choice of
interpolation function. There is some preference for the `simple' interpolation
function as found by Famaey & Binney. I introduce an interpolation function
that shares the advantages of the simple function on galaxy scales while having
a much smaller impact in the solar system. I also solve the inverse problem,
inferring the surface mass density distribution of the Milky Way from the
terminal velocities. The result is a Galaxy with `bumps and wiggles' in both
its luminosity profile and rotation curve that are reminiscent of those
frequently observed in external galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 31 pages
