Greek Good Hermes and Vedic Goddess Saramā in Comparative Aspect
Following the suggestions of nineteenth-century linguists (Max Müller, 1838, Monier-Williams, 1898) the author, basing on the linguistic and mythological comparative analysis, shows that the Greek good Hermes can be related to the Vedic goddess Sarama. The article firstly gives on overview of the different conceptions regarding the etymology of the theonym “Hermes”. The most popular and probable of them is the one proposed by Martin P. Nilsson (1949), who connects it with the greek noun ἕρμα ‘prop, support, reef, rock under water’. Some difficulties, which this hypothesis has given rise to, show that the problem of etymology of the name Hermes is long standing and unsolved. Thereafter, the author proves that etymologies of Hermes and Sarama can connect to the same Indo-European root *ser-. Also the oldest Greek and Vedic literature, primarily Homer’s poems, Homeric Hymn to Hermes and Rigvedic Hymn X. 108, demonstrates numerous similarities between both deities
NOSTALGIA, EXPULSION AND THE POETIC I: THE POETICS OF DIASPORA IN THE CORPUS THEOGNIDEUM
In the anthology of archaic elegiac poetry called the Corpus Theognideum, the poetic I often eludes traditional approaches to the ‘poetic authority’. Instead of presenting itself as a citizen of a particular ‘city-state’ or at least a prominent member of an elitist circle who came to have a position of authority, the persona loquens situates himself as removed from the community: as impoverished, expelled from his polis, despised, embittered and thirsting for revenge. The purpose of my paper is to consider how the tension between the alienation of the poetic I and the unity of the audience might function during the act of (re)performance. Applying considerations of Edward W Said on ‘diasporic temporality’ to the political and economic conflict between the ideologies of polis and anti-polis in archaic and classical Greece, I show that the poetic I in the Theognidean tradition, by presenting itself as an exile and a victim of the democratic movement, expresses the temporally distant position of the so far privileged aristocracy, situated in dialectical opposition to the democratic institutions of polis
The Pan-European Transport Corridor III from The Polish Geopolitical Perspective
The Pan-European Transport Corridor III serves as potentially important linkage bringing together countries of Intermarum region, namely Poland, Germany and Ukraine in the parallel perspective. At the same time it seems that its role in being a passage leading to Asia may be questioned in the context of historically created transport networks that have played an important role in shaping the history of Europe and of the world. It does not mean, however, that it does not play an important role from Poland's geopolitical perspective
What\u27s Your Biggest Secret?
Initial study (e.g., Kahneman & Tversky, (1982) has indicated that failed actions (i.e., switches that result in negative outcomes) evoke more regret than inactions (i.e., non-switches resulting in negative outcomes), a vigorous finding in the regret literature. Subsequent work, however, revealed that individuals report more inaction regrets than action regrets (e.g., Gilovich & Medvec, 1994). The current research examines whether regret stemming from actions versus inactions are moderated by one’s attachment style. Attachment can be both crucial when it comes to decision making and one’s ability to mitigate the negative effects following a decision. Participants will be asked to complete an existing attachment style measure and then asked to imagine themselves either switching from their initial decision or sticking to it that produces an undesired outcome. Participants then will rate the intensity of regret they would experience following the negative outcome. Approximately 60 students will participate in this study. Consistent with Kahneman and Tversky’s findings, we expect to find a main effect for decision type. That is, individuals will report experiencing more regret following actions that inactions. However, we also expect to find a significant interaction effect between attachment styles and decision type with regards to experience of regret. We expect that present study will provide explanation to why people experience varying amount of regret stemming from failed actions and inactions. That is, the amount of regret experienced between actions and inactions will change based on one’s attachment style type
Revelations: Spirituality as Privileged Perspectivism in Magical Realist Distortions
This thesis examines the role of spiritual beliefs in the literary mode now known as magical realism in Cuban Alejo Carpentier’s The Kingdom of This World (1949), Indian-Born British and American Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses (1988), and a lesser-known novel, Household Saints (1981) by Francine Prose, an American writer. The Kingdom of This World, itself the originator of the mode of magical realism, has allowed me to conclude with Carpentier that magical realism arises from “privileged revelations,” as he notes in the preface to his seminal book. But these revelations in magical realism are not necessarily always of the divine. More often they are of the mundane. This sense of the heightening of reality to the point where it could be interpreted as magical or “marvelous,” as per Carpentier’s first naming of the form as lo real maravilloso or “the marvelous real,” often happens when characters notice something they had never seen before in a context that is natural. Whether they are highly in tune with or terribly estranged from their ethnic, racial, communal, and traditional identities and beliefs, characters in these books are conduits for these privileged revelations. Mackandal and Soliman in The Kingdom of this World, Farishta and Chamcha in The Satanic Verses, and Theresa in Household Saints, are all such characters. Consequently, in all three novels, the question of divine manifestation and belief can often be reduced to perspective. Classic theorizations by Maggie Ann Bowers, Wendy Faris and Lois Parkinson Zamora, which focus on the way magical realism blurs boundaries between many binary oppositions, as well as more contemporary approaches by Lyn Di Iorio Sandín and Caroline Rody, focusing on ethnicity, race, and trauma, will further this analysis. An account of folkloric beliefs in magic surrounding the Catholic Saint George and a dissection of contemporary fashion practices by Daniel Roseberry for the French haute couture house of Schiaparelli will bracket the examination of this theme in literature as both contemporary and timeless
The Effects of Mindfulness on Regret: An Explorative Analysis
Regret has been found to be associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive distortions (Markman et al., 2009; Markham & Miller, 2006). In relation to regret, past actions and decisions create painful experiences resulting in negative rumination (Olatunji et al., 2013). However, if the negative rumination is reduced there is the potential to learn important feedback from previous decisions that have resulted in painful experiences. Thus, the current research explores the mitigating role of mindfulness on the amount of regret experienced. It was hypothesized that the participants would report experiencing less amount of regret following mindfulness meditation. First, participants were asked to recall a regretful life event and asked to rate the intensity of emotions they experience, including regret. Keeping the memory in mind, all the participants then participated in a guided mindfulness session. Following the mindfulness session, participants were asked to re-evaluate the memory they recalled by completing post self-report ratings as well as the short version of 12 item 5-Facet Scale (Baer et al., 2006) and 12 item Self Compassion Scale (Neff, 2019). Participants were instructed to practice the same medication at least twice for a week using audio recording provided by the investigators. Secondly, one week later, phone interviews were conducted. Eight students participated in the current study for a partial course credit. Quantitative analysis revealed that participants reported experiencing significantly less amount of regret following guided meditation. Results suggest that 75% of the participants were able to process their regretful experiences and have a better understanding of self-acceptance
3D finite elements method (FEM) Analysis of basic process parameters in rotary piercing mill
In this paper 3D FEM analysis of process parameters and its infl uence in rotary piercing mill is presented. The FEM analyze of the rotary piercing process was made under the conditions of 3D state of strain with taking into consideration the thermal phenomena. The calculations were made with application of different rolls’ skew angles and different plug designs. In the result, progression of shapes, temperature and distributions of stress and strain were characterized. The numerical results of calculations were compared with results of stand test with use of 100Cr6 steel. The comparisons of numerical and experimental tests confirm good agreement between obtained results

Effects of osteopontin inhibition on radiosensitivity of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells

Abstract

Background

Osteopontin (OPN) is a secreted glycophosphoprotein that is overexpressed in various tumors, and high levels of OPN have been associated with poor prognosis of cancer patients. In patients with head and neck cancer, high OPN plasma levels have been associated with poor prognosis following radiotherapy. Since little is known about the relationship between OPN expression and radiosensitivity, we investigated the cellular and radiation induced effects of OPN siRNA in human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.

Methods

MDA-MB-231 cells were transfected with OPN-specific siRNAs and irradiated after 24 h. To verify the OPN knockdown, we measured the OPN mRNA and protein levels using qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Furthermore, the functional effects of OPN siRNAs were studied by assays to assess clonogenic survival, migration and induction of apoptosis.

Results

Treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells with OPN siRNAs resulted in an 80% decrease in the OPN mRNA level and in a decrease in extracellular OPN protein level. Transfection reduced clonogenic survival to 42% (p = 0.008), decreased the migration rate to 60% (p = 0.15) and increased apoptosis from 0.3% to 1.7% (p = 0.04). Combination of OPN siRNA and irradiation at 2 Gy resulted in a further reduction of clonogenic survival to 27% (p < 0.001), decreased the migration rate to 40% (p = 0.03) and increased apoptosis to 4% (p < 0.005). Furthermore, OPN knockdown caused a weak radiosensitization with an enhancement factor of 1.5 at 6 Gy (p = 0.09) and a dose modifying factor (DMF10) of 1.1.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that an OPN knockdown improves radiobiological effects in MDA-MB-231 cells. Therefore, OPN seems to be an attractive target to improve the effectiveness of radiotherapy.</p
