Content & Watkins's account of natural axiomatizations
This paper briefly recounts the importance of the notion of natural axiomatizations for explicating hypothetico-deductivism, empirical significance, theoretical reduction, and organic fertility. Problems for the account of natural axiomatizations developed by John Watkins in Science and Scepticism and the revised account developed by Elie Zahar are demonstrated. It is then shown that Watkins's account can be salvaged from various counter-examples in a principled way by adding the demand that every axiom of a natural axiomatization should be part of the content of the theory being axiomatized. The crucial point here is that content cannot simply be identified with the set of logical consequences of a theory, but must be restricted to a proper subset of the consequence set. It is concluded that the revised Watkins account has certain advantages over the account of natural axiomatizations offered in Gemes (1993)
Rare, Threatened and Endangered Plants and Animals of Oregon
Extinction is a natural process. Today, however, plant and animal species are disappearing world-wide at an accelerated pace. Based on current trends, half of the species on earth will be extinct within the next 100 years. The major cause of this phenomenon is large-scale destruction of native habitats, which has increased since European settlement began in the mid 1800\u27s - in Oregon and throughout the New World.
Once lost, a species can never be recovered, and there is no way of knowing how useful it may have been. We do know that human beings and many of their industries depend on plant and animal products. About 50% of all pharmaceuticals have a natural component as an active ingredient, yet less than one percent of the world\u27s species have been chemically analyzed and tested. Many invertebrates and plants contain undescribed and highly functional compounds. Limnanthes floccosa subsp. grandiflora, or wooly meadow-foam, a rare plant that grows in southwest Oregon, has been recently found to produce a hybrid with the more common member of the genus, Limnanthes alba. This hybrid grows well in the poorly drained soils of the Willamette Valley and produces a valuable oil used for soaps, plastic and rubber production. In addition, the new hybrid meadow-foam does not require the field burning necessary for other crops. This species, and many other Oregon natives, will be lost without intervention. The purpose of this book is to provide land managers, owners and interested parties with a list of those species in Oregon which are in greatest jeopardy
Incorporating climate change into systematic conservation planning
Abstract The principles of systematic conservation planning are now widely used by governments and non-government organizations alike to develop biodiversity conservation plans for countries, states, regions, and ecoregions. Many of the species and ecosystems these plans were designed to conserve are now being affected by climate change, and there is a critical need to incorporate new and complementary approaches into these plans that will aid species and ecosystems in adjusting to potential climate change impacts. We propose five approaches to climate change adaptation that can be integrated into existing or -012-0269-3 new biodiversity conservation plans: (1) conserving the geophysical stage, (2) protecting climatic refugia, (3) enhancing regional connectivity, (4) sustaining ecosystem process and function, and (5) capitalizing on opportunities emerging in response to climate change. We discuss both key assumptions behind each approach and the trade-offs involved in using the approach for conservation planning. We also summarize additional data beyond those typically used in systematic conservation plans required to implement these approaches. Comparative Modelling of the Social Processes of Leadership in Work Units
This research tests the extent to which the social processes of leadership, as derived from the full grounded theory method, may be tapping constructs other than those measured by existing measures of transformational leadership. The impact on work unit outcomes of two measures of transformational leadership and the social processes of leadership scale (SPL) were tested. Comparative structural equation modelling was undertaken. It was found that, with one exception - 'active management processes', normally classified as transactional management - measures of transformational leadership are probably pre-existing measures of the social processes of leadership in organisations. The use of the grounded theory method to research leadership is supported. MutS Homologue 2 and the Long-term Benefit of Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Lung Cancer
Abstract
Purpose: We sought to determine the long-term (median follow-up, 7.5 years) predictive power of human MutS homologue 2 (MSH2) immunohistochemical expression in patients who enrolled in the International Adjuvant Lung Trial.
Experimental design: We tested the interaction between MSH2 and the allocated treatment (chemotherapy versus observation) in a Cox model adjusted on clinicopathologic variables. The significance level was set at 0.01.
Results: MSH2 levels were low in 257 (38%) and high in 416 (62%) tumors. The benefit from chemotherapy was likely different according to MSH2 (interaction test, P = 0.06): there was a trend for chemotherapy to prolong overall survival when MSH2 was low [hazard ratio (HR), 0.76; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 0.59-0.97; P = 0.03], but not when MSH2 was high (HR, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.81-1.55; P = 0.48). In the control arm, the HR was 0.66 (95% CI, 0.49-0.90; P = 0.01) when MSH2 was high. When combining MSH2 with excision repair cross-complementing group 1 (ERCC1) into four subgroups, the benefit of chemotherapy decreased with the number of markers expressed at high levels (P = 0.01). A similar decrease was noted when combining MSH2 and P27 (P = 0.01). Chemotherapy prolonged overall survival in the combined low MSH2/low ERCC1 subgroup (HR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.47-0.91; P = 0.01) and in the combined low MSH2/low P27 subgroup (HR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46-0.93; P = 0.01).
Conclusions: MSH2 expression is a borderline significant predictor of a long-term benefit from adjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy in patients with completely resected lung cancer.
