SCRI Results With the Tadpole-Improved Clover Action
We compare light hadron spectroscopy using the Wilson and Clover fermionic
actions. We show that a Clover coefficient chosen using tadpole-improved
tree-level perturbation theory effectively eliminates the O(a) discretization
errors present in the Wilson action. We find that discretization errors in
light spectroscopy for both the Wilson and Clover actions are characterized by
an energy scale mu of about 200-300 MeV, indicating that these errors can be
reduced to the 5% level by using the Clover action at an inverse lattice
spacing of about 1.3 GeV.Comment: Talk presented at the International Workshop on Lattice QCD On

Proton lifetime bounds from chirally symmetric lattice QCD
We present results for the matrix elements relevant for proton decay in Grand
Unified Theories (GUTs). The calculation is performed at a fixed lattice
spacing a^{-1}=1.73(3) GeV using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions on
lattices of size 16^3\times32 and 24^3\times64 with a fifth dimension of length
16. We use the indirect method which relies on an effective field theory
description of proton decay, where we need to estimate the low energy
constants, \alpha = -0.0112(25) GeV^3 and \beta = 0.0120(26) GeV^3. We relate
these low energy constants to the proton decay matrix elements using leading
order chiral perturbation theory. These can then be combined with experimental
bounds on the proton lifetime to bound parameters of individual GUTs.Comment: 17 pages, 9 Figure
Lattice QCD with mixed actions
We discuss some of the implications of simulating QCD when the action used
for the sea quarks is different from that used for the valence quarks. We
present exploratory results for the hadron mass spectrum and pseudoscalar meson
decay constants using improved staggered sea quarks and HYP-smeared overlap
valence quarks. We propose a method for matching the valence quark mass to the
sea quark mass and demonstrate it on UKQCD clover data in the simpler case
where the sea and valence actions are the same.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures some minor modification to text and figures.

Quenched QCD with O(a) improvement: I. The spectrum of light hadrons
We present a comprehensive study of the masses of pseudoscalar and vector
mesons, as well as octet and decuplet baryons computed in O(a) improved
quenched lattice QCD. Results have been obtained using the non-perturbative
definition of the improvement coefficient c_sw, and also its estimate in
tadpole improved perturbation theory. We investigate effects of improvement on
the incidence of exceptional configurations, mass splittings and the parameter
J. By combining the results obtained using non-perturbative and tadpole
improvement in a simultaneous continuum extrapolation we can compare our
spectral data to experiment. We confirm earlier findings by the CP-PACS
Collaboration that the quenched light hadron spectrum agrees with experiment at

Light hadron spectroscopy with O(a) improved dynamical fermions
We present the first results for the static quark potential and the light
hadron spectrum using dynamical fermions at using an O(a) improved
Wilson fermion action together with the standard Wilson plaquette action for
the gauge part. Sea quark masses were chosen such that the pseudoscalar-vector
mass ratio, m_PS/m_V$, varies from 0.86 to 0.67. Finite-size effects are
studied by using three different volumes, 8^3\cdot 24, 12^3\cdot 24 and
16^3\cdot 24. Comparing our results to previous ones obtained using the
quenched approximation, we find evidence for sea quark effects in quantities
like the static quark potential and the vector-pseudoscalar hyperfine

Children, family and the state : revisiting public and private realms
The state is often viewed as part of the impersonal public sphere in opposition to the private family as a locus of warmth and intimacy. In recent years this modernist dichotomy has been challenged by theoretical and institutional trends which have altered the relationship between state and family. This paper explores changes to both elements of the dichotomy that challenge this relationship: a more fragmented family structure and more individualised and networked support for children. It will also examine two new elements that further disrupt any clear mapping between state/family and public/private dichotomies: the third party role of the child in family/state affairs and children's application of virtual technology that locates the private within new cultural and social spaces. The paper concludes by examining the rise of the 'individual child' hitherto hidden within the family/state dichotomy and the implications this has for intergenerational relations at personal and institutional levels
