    Renal AA-amyloidosis in intravenous drug users - a role for HIV-infection?

    Background: Chronic renal disease is a serious complication of long-term intravenous drug use (IVDU). Recent reports have postulated a changing pattern of underlying nephropathy over the last decades. Methods: Retrospective investigation including all patients with prior or present IVDU that underwent renal biopsy because of chronic kidney disease between 01.04.2002 and 31.03.2012 in the city of Frankfurt/Main, Germany. Results: Twenty four patients with IVDU underwent renal biopsy because of progressive chronic kidney disease or proteinuria. Renal AA-amyloidosis was the predominant cause of renal failure in 50% of patients. Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (GN) was the second most common cause found in 21%. Patients with AA-amyloidosis were more likely to be HIV infected (67 vs.17%; p=0.036) and tended to have a higher rate of repeated systemic infections (92 vs. 50%; p=0.069). Patients with AA-amyloidosis presented with progressive renal disease and nephrotic-range proteinuria but most patients had no peripheral edema or systemic hypertension. Development of proteinuria preceded the decline of GFR for approximately 1--2 years. Conclusions: AA-amyloidosis was the predominant cause of progressive renal disease in the last 10 years in patients with IVDU. The highest rate of AA-amyloidosis observed was seen in HIV infected patients with IVDU. We speculate that chronic HIV-infection as well as the associated immunosuppression might promote development of AA-amyloidosis by increasing frequency and duration of infections acquired by IVDU

    Visible light is a better co-inducer of apoptosis for curcumin-treated human melanoma cells than UVA

    Curcumin attracts worldwide scientific interest due to its anti-proliferative and apoptosis inducing effects on different tumor cells at concentrations ranging from 10 to 150 µM (3.7–55 µg/ml). Unfortunately, because of a low oral bioavailability, only low and pharmacologically ineffective serum levels are achievable. In this study, an alternative treatment concept consisting of low concentration curcumin (0.2–5 µg/ml) and irradiation with UVA or visible light (VL) has been tested. The experimental results show clearly that this treatment decreases the proliferation and the viability of human melanoma cells while the cell membrane integrity remains intact. We identified the onset of apoptosis characterized by typical markers such as active caspases 8, 9 and 3 as well as DNA fragmentation accompanied by the loss of cell adhesion. The mitochondrial apoptosis signaling pathway is predominant due to an early activation of caspase-9. The present data indicate a higher efficacy of a combination of curcumin and VL than curcumin and UVA. Reduced effects as a result of light absorption by heavily pigmented skin are unlikely if VL is used. These results indicate that a combination of curcumin and light irradiation may be a useful additional therapy in the treatment of malignant disease

    Ab initio calculations of the concentration dependent band gap reduction in dilute nitrides

    While being of persistent interest for the integration of lattice-matched laser devices with silicon circuits, the electronic structure of dilute nitride III/V-semiconductors has presented a challenge to ab initio computational approaches. The root of this lies in the strong distortion N atoms exert on most host materials. Here, we resolve these issues by combining density functional theory calculations based on the meta-GGA functional presented by Tran and Blaha (TB09) with a supercell approach for the dilute nitride Ga(NAs). Exploring the requirements posed to supercells, we show that the distortion field of a single N atom must be allowed to decrease so far, that it does not overlap with its periodic images. This also prevents spurious electronic interactions between translational symmetric atoms, allowing to compute band gaps in very good agreement with experimentally derived reference values. These results open up the field of dilute nitride compound semiconductors to predictive ab initio calculations.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Review komatiites: from Earth’s geological settings to planetary and astrobiological contexts

They are among the most ancient lavas of the Earth following the 3.8 Ga pillow basalts at Isua and they represent some of the oldest ultramafic magmatic rocks preserved in the Earth’s crust at 3.5 Ga. This fact, linked to their particular features (high magnesium content, high melting temperatures, low dynamic viscosities, etc.), has attracted the community of geoscientists since their discovery in the early sixties, who have tried to determine their origin and understand their meaning in the context of terrestrial mantle evolution. In addition, it has been proposed that komatiites are not restricted to our planet, but they could be found in other extraterrestrial settings in our Solar System (particularly on Mars and Io). It is important to note that komatiites may be extremely significant in the study of the origins and evolution of Life on Earth. They not only preserve essential geochemical clues of the interaction between the pristine Earth rocks and atmosphere, but also may have been potential suitable sites for biological processes to develop.     A polymer analogous reaction for the formation of imidazolium and NHC based porous polymer networks

Using a stepwise approach, first a polyimine network is formed by polymerization of the tetrafunctional amine tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane. This polyimine network is converted in the second step into polyimidazolium chloride and finally to a polyNHC network. Furthermore a porous Cu(II)-coordinated polyNHC network can be generated. Supercritical drying generates polymer networks with high permanent surface areas and porosities which can be applied for different catalytic reactions.     Long-Lasting Enhancement of Visual Perception with Repetitive Noninvasive Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation

    Understanding processes performed by an intact visual cortex as the basis for developing methods that enhance or restore visual perception is of great interest to both researchers and medical practitioners. Here, we explore whether contrast sensitivity, a main function of the primary visual cortex (V1), can be improved in healthy subjects by repetitive, noninvasive anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Contrast perception was measured via threshold perimetry directly before and after intervention (tDCS or sham stimulation) on each day over 5 consecutive days (24 subjects, double- blind study). tDCS improved contrast sensitivity from the second day onwards, with significant effects lasting 24 h. After the last stimulation on day 5, the anodal group showed a significantly greater improvement in contrast perception than the sham group (23 vs. 5%). We found significant long-term effects in only the central 2–4° of the visual field 4 weeks after the last stimulation. We suspect a combination of two factors contributes to these lasting effects. First, the V1 area that represents the central retina was located closer to the polarization electrode, resulting in higher current density. Second, the central visual field is represented by a larger cortical area relative to the peripheral visual field (cortical magnification). This is the first study showing that tDCS over V1 enhances contrast perception in healthy subjects for several weeks. This study contributes to the investigation of the causal relationship between the external modulation of neuronal membrane potential and behavior (in our case, visual perception). Because the vast majority of human studies only show temporary effects after single tDCS sessions targeting the visual system, our study underpins the potential for lasting effects of repetitive tDCS-induced modulation of neuronal excitability

    Metadaten nach dem Dublin Core Metadata Element Set in ausgewählten bibliothekarischen Projekten : Projektarbeit

    Da in der heutigen Zeit Metadaten auch in der bibliothekarischen Erschließung eine wesentliche Rolle spielen und diese dann durch das Internet in der ganzen Welt genutzt werden können, ist es erforderlich, ein international anerkanntes Regelwerk zu schaffen, das einheitliche Strukturen aufweist und möglichst einfach gehalten ist. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Auswirkungen des für diese Vorgaben geschaffenen Dublin-Core-Sets auf die bibliothekarische Arbeit zu untersuchen. Dabei wird sowohl auf die historische Entwicklung als auch die einzelnen Elemente des Dublin-Core-Sets eingegangen. Darüber hinaus wird untersucht, welche Rolle Bibliotheken im Hinblick auf die wachsende Präsenz der elektronisch verfügbaren Dokumente spielen und wie diese Metadaten für Bibliotheken, Bibliotheksverbünde sowie Hochschulnetze genutzt werden können. Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet dann die Anwendung von Dublin-Core in ausgewählten Projekten, sowie ein Vergleich der Nutzung von Metadaten nach Dublin-Core in diesen Projekten. Die daraus resultierende Frage, in wie weit sich Dublin-Core als Standard zur Erschließung von Metadaten etablieren konnte, steht dann im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung des darauffolgenden Kapitels. Zum Abschluss der Arbeit soll dann geprüft werden, ob Dublin-Core in der Lage ist, den o.g. Forderungen Rechnung zu tragen. Darüber hinaus werden Perspektiven für die Zukunft bezüglich des Einsatzes von Dublin-Core kurz angerissen
