Signposts or weathervanes? The curious case of corporate social responsibility and conflict minerals
Corporate social responsibility is often framed in terms of opposing constructions of the firm. These reflect, respectively, different accounts of its obligations: either to shareholders or to stakeholders (who include shareholders). Although these opposing constructions of corporate responsibility are diametrically opposed, they are also much more fluid and mobile in certain contexts, since they can act as discursive resources that are deployed and brought into play in the struggle over shaping what responsibility means. They are less the fixed, ideological “signposts” they might appear, and more like “weathervanes” that move alongside changing rhetorical currents. To show this, we analyse the Securities and Exchange Commission consultation process, and legislation, relating to the provenance of “conflict minerals”. We identify two dialectically opposed camps, each seeking to influence final legislation and with end goals in keeping with the shareholder/stakeholder dichotomy. One camp lobbied for firms to scrutinize their entire supply chain, constructing the firm as a “global citizen” with very wide social responsibilities. The second camp lobbied for a lighter touch approach, constructing the firm as a “trader”, with much narrower social responsibilities. We analyse the complex interplay between these two opposed camps, our contribution being to show how both deploy competing conceptions of the corporation as discursive resources
Elliptic Reciprocity
The paper introduces the notions of an elliptic pair, an elliptic cycle and
an elliptic list over a square free positive integer d. These concepts are
related to the notions of amicable pairs of primes and aliquot cycles that were
introduced by Silverman and Stange. Settling a matter left open by Silverman
and Stange it is shown that for d=3 there are elliptic cycles of length 6. For
d not equal to 3 the question of the existence of proper elliptic lists of
length n over d is reduced to the the theory of prime producing quadratic
polynomials. For d=163 a proper elliptic list of length 40 is exhibited. It is
shown that for each d there is an upper bound on the length of a proper
elliptic list over d. The final section of the paper contains heuristic
arguments supporting conjectured asymptotics for the number of elliptic pairs
below integer X. Finally, for d congruent to 3 modulo 8 the existence of
infinitely many anomalous prime numbers is derived from Bunyakowski's

Fixing the U-band photometry of Type Ia supernovae
We present previously unpublished photometry of supernovae 2003gs and 2003hv.
Using spectroscopically-derived corrections to the U-band photometry, we
reconcile U-band light curves made from imagery with the Cerro Tololo 0.9-m,
1.3-m and Las Campanas 1-m telescopes. Previously, such light curves showed a
0.4 mag spread at one month after maximum light. This gives us hope that a set
of corrected ultraviolet light curves of nearby objects can contribute to the
full utilization of rest frame U-band data of supernovae at redshift ~0.3 to
0.8. As pointed out recently by Kessler et al. in the context of the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey supernova search, if we take the published U-band photometry
of nearby Type Ia supernovae at face value, there is a 0.12 mag U-band anomaly
in the distance moduli of higher redshift objects. This anomaly led the Sloan
survey to eliminate from their analyses all photometry obtained in the rest
frame U-band. The Supernova Legacy Survey eliminated observer frame U-band
photometry, which is to say nearby objects observed in the U-band, but they
used photometry of high redshift objects no matter in which band the photons

Association patterns and foraging behaviour in natural and artificial guppy shoals
Animal groups are often nonrandom assemblages of individuals that tend to be assorted by factors such as sex, body size, relatedness and familiarity. Laboratory studies using fish have shown that familiarity among shoal members confers a number of benefits to individuals, such as increased foraging success. However, it is unclear whether fish in natural shoals obtain these benefits through association with familiars. We investigated whether naturally occurring shoals of guppies, Poecilia reticulata, are more adept at learning a novel foraging task than artificial (in which we selected shoal members randomly) shoals. We used social network analysis to compare the structures of natural and artificial shoals and examined whether shoal organization predicts patterns of foraging behaviour. Fish in natural shoals benefited from increased success in the novel foraging task compared with fish in artificial shoals. Individuals in natural shoals showed a reduced latency to approach the novel feeder, followed more and formed smaller subgroups compared to artificial shoals. Our findings show that fish in natural shoals do gain foraging benefits and that this may be facilitated by a reduced perception of risk among familiarized individuals and/or enhanced social learning mediated by following other individuals and small group sizes. Although the structure of shoals was stable over time, we found no direct relationship between shoal social structure and patterns of foraging behaviour
Socratic dialogue and careers
This paper outlines a technique for enhancing the effectiveness of careers thinking by identifying and challenging tacit beliefs about career success. These beliefs can be understood as social scripts, i.e. cognitive structures that simplify common decision scenarios. An important contribution of careers counselling is to enable clients to recognise tacit beliefs and assumptions that limit the effectiveness of their careers thinking. In the process, this often involves finding problems. This paper outlines how an archetypal problem finding technique – Socratic inquiry – can be adapted and applied in this particular context. Socratic inquiry can enable identification of social scripts which are a source of limiting assumptions. It can also enable cross-examination of these assumptions, and enhance the facility for internal dialogue
The Carnegie Supernova Project. I. Third Photometry Data Release of Low-redshift Type Ia Supernovae and Other White Dwarf Explosions
We present final natural-system optical (ugriBV) and near-infrared (YJH) photometry of 134 supernovae (SNe) with probable white dwarf progenitors that were observed in 2004-2009 as part of the first stage of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I). The sample consists of 123 Type Ia SNe, 5 Type Iax SNe, 2 super-Chandrasekhar SN candidates, 2 Type Ia SNe interacting with circumstellar matter, and 2 SN 2006bt-like events. The redshifts of the objects range from to 0.0835; the median redshift is 0.0241. For 120 (90%) of these SNe, near-infrared photometry was obtained. Average optical extinction coefficients and color terms are derived and demonstrated to be stable during the five CSP-I observing campaigns. Measurements of the CSP-I near-infrared bandpasses are also described, and near-infrared color terms are estimated through synthetic photometry of stellar atmosphere models. Optical and near-infrared magnitudes of local sequences of tertiary standard stars for each supernova are given, and a new calibration of Y-band magnitudes of the Persson et al. standards in the CSP-I natural system is presented.Fil: Krisciunas, Kevin. Do the photometric colors of Type II-P Supernovae allow accurate determination of host galaxy extinction?
We present infrared photometry of SN 1999em, plus optical photometry,
infrared photometry, and optical spectroscopy of SN 2003hn. Both objects were
Type II-P supernovae. The V-[RIJHK] color curves of these supernovae evolved in
a very similar fashion until the end of plateau phase. This allows us to
determine how much more extinction the light of SN 2003hn suffered compared to
SN 1999em. Since we have an estimate of the total extinction suffered by SN
1999em from model fits of ground-based and space-based spectra as well as
photometry of SN 1999em, we can estimate the total extinction and absolute
magnitudes of SN 2003hn with reasonable accuracy. Since the host galaxy of SN
2003hn also produced the Type Ia SN 2001el, we can directly compare the
absolute magnitudes of these two SNe of different types.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
The Distance to NGC 1316 (Fornax A) From Observations of Four Type Ia Supernovae
The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is a well-studied member of
the Fornax Cluster and a prolific producer of Type Ia supernovae, having hosted
four observed events since 1980. Here we present detailed optical and
near-infrared light curves of the spectroscopically normal SN 2006dd. These
data are used, along with previously published photometry of the normal SN
1980N and SN 1981D, and the fast-declining, low-luminosity SN 2006mr, to
compute independent estimates of the host reddening for each supernova, and the
distance to NGC 1316. From the three normal supernovae, we find a distance of
17.8 +/- 0.3 (random) +/- 0.3 (systematic) Mpc for Ho = 72. Distance moduli
derived from the "EBV" and Tripp methods give values that are mutually
consistent to 4 -- 8%. Moreover, the weighted means of the distance moduli for
these three SNe for three methods agree to within 3%. This consistency is
encouraging and supports the premise that Type Ia supernovae are reliable
distance indicators at the 5% precision level or better. On the other hand, the
two methods used to estimate the distance of the fast-declining SN 2006mr both
yield a distance to NGC 1316 which is 25-30% larger. This disparity casts doubt
on the suitability of fast-declining events for estimating extragalactic
distances. Modest-to-negligible host galaxy reddening values are derived for
all four supernovae. Nevertheless, two of them (SN 2006dd and SN 2006mr) show
strong NaID interstellar lines in the host galaxy system. The strength of this
absorption is completely inconsistent with the small reddening values derived
from the supernova light curves if the gas in NGC 1316 is typical of that found
in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way. In addition, the equivalent width
of the NaID lines in SN 2006dd appear to have weakened significantly some

The Carnegie Supernova Project: Analysis of the First Sample of Low-Redshift Type-Ia Supernovae
We present the analysis of the first set of low-redshift Type Ia supernovae
(SNe Ia) by the Carnegie Supernova Project. Well-sampled, high-precision
optical (ugriBV) and near-infrared (NIR; YJHKs) light curves obtained in a
well-understood photometric system are used to provide light-curve parameters,
and ugriBVYJH template light curves. The intrinsic colors at maximum light are
calibrated to compute optical--NIR color excesses for the full sample, thus
allowing the properties of the reddening law in the host galaxies to be
studied. A low value of Rv~1.7, is derived when using the entire sample of SNe.
However, when the two highly reddened SNe in the sample are excluded, a value
Galactic standard of Rv~3.2 is obtained. The colors of these two events are
well matched by a reddening model due to circumstellar dust. The peak
luminosities are calibrated using a two-parameter linear fit to the decline
rates and the colors, or alternatively, the color excesses. In both cases,
dispersions in absolute magnitude of 0.12--0.16 mag are obtained, depending on
the filter-color combination. In contrast to the results obtained from color
excesses, these fits give Rv~1--2, even when the two highly reddened SNe are
excluded. This discrepancy suggests that, beyond the "normal" interstellar
reddening produced in the host galaxies, there is an intrinsic dispersion in
the colors of SNe Ia which is correlated with luminosity but independent of the
decline rate. Finally, a Hubble diagram is produced by combining the results of
the fits for each filter. The resulting scatter of 0.12 mag appears to be
limited by peculiar velocities as evidenced by the strong correlation between
the distance-modulus residuals among the different filters. The implication is
that the actual precision of SN Ia distances is 3--4%.Comment: 76 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in A
Carnegie Supernova Project-II: Extending the Near-Infrared Hubble Diagram for Type Ia Supernovae to
The Carnegie Supernova Project-II (CSP-II) was an NSF-funded, four-year
program to obtain optical and near-infrared observations of a "Cosmology"
sample of Type Ia supernovae located in the smooth Hubble flow (). Light curves were also obtained of a "Physics"
sample composed of 90 nearby Type Ia supernovae at selected for
near-infrared spectroscopic time-series observations. The primary emphasis of
the CSP-II is to use the combination of optical and near-infrared photometry to
achieve a distance precision of better than 5%. In this paper, details of the
supernova sample, the observational strategy, and the characteristics of the
photometric data are provided. In a companion paper, the near-infrared
