Motion studies of high current arcs using an optical fibre array imaging system
This paper presents an integrated portable measurement system for thestudy of high speed and high temperature unsteady plasma flows such as thosefound in the vicinity of high current switching arcs. The system permits direct andnon-intrusive measurement of arc light emission images with a capture rate of 1million images per second (1MHz), and 8 bit intensity resolution. Novel softwaretechniques are reported to measure arc trajectories. Results are presented on singlehigh current (2kA) discharge events where the electrode and arc runner surfaces areinvestigated using 3D laser scanning methods; such that the position of the arc rootson the runner can be correlated to the measured trajectories. Results are presented on single high current (2kA) discharge events where the electrode and arc runner surfaces are investigated using 3D laser scanning methods; such that the position of the arc roots on the runner can be correlated to the measured trajectories. The results show evidence of the cathode arc root stepping along the arc runners, and regions of where the arc runner is eroded by a stationary arc

Leaching of a Cu-Co ore from Congo using sulphuric acidhydrogen peroxide leachants
A Cu-Co ore from Katinga Province, the Republic of Congo containing 1.5% Co and 1.6% Cu was tested to determine the leachability of Cu and Co using sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide mixtures at different conditions. Without hydrogen peroxide, the maximum extraction of copper and cobalt were found to be ~80% and ~15%, respectively when the acid concentration was varied between 0.36 - 1.1M. When hydrogen peroxide was added (0.008-0.042M), Cu recovery was enhanced to ~90%. Recoveries of ~90% of Co could be achieved at 20ºC, using leachants consisting of 0.36M sulphuric acid and 0.025M hydrogen peroxide after 3 hours. The reaction time to reach 90% Co extraction was reduced to less than 2 hours at 30ºC. Stabcal modelling of the Eh-pH diagrams shows the importance of hydrogen peroxide as a reductant. The decrease of solution potential (300-350 mV) by adding hydrogen peroxide was confirmed by Eh measurements during the tests. The leaching follows the shrinking core model kinetics, where the rate constant is linearly dependent on hydrogen peroxide concentration in the range 0-0.025M and proportional to (1/r2) where r is the average radius of the mineral particles. The activation energy for the leaching process is 72.3 kJ/mol

A sensitive study of real time storm surge forecast model to meteorological and hydrodynamic fields along the Sanin coast, Japan
In the present study, the performance of the real time storm surge forecast model based on the neural network is examined by forecasting Typhoon Megi storm surge 2003 at Sakai, Japan in terms of a variety of the combinations of data obtained from Typhoons Songda 2004 and Maemi 2003. In the experiments, the data sets are trained with the meteorological data measured at five stations: the sea level pressure, the depression rate of the sea level pressure, the wind speed, the wind direction; the hydroulic data: the sea surface level and the storm surge at Sakai; the typhoon parameters: the typhoon position, the central pressure of the typhoon and the highest wind speed near the typhoon center. In addition, the forecast time spans of 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 12 and 24 hours are investigated for all cases of the data sets. From the results, It is found that the performance of the real time forecast models shows best when training the neural network with the data set of the storm surge, the sea level pressure, the depression rates of the sea level pressure, the wind speed and the typhoon position at Sakai
