The Flash Crash, a brief period of extreme market volatility on May 6, 2010, raised questions about the current structure of the U.S. financial markets. We use audit-trail data to describe the structure of the E-mini S&P 500 stock index futures market on May 6. We ask three questions. How did High Frequency Traders (HFTs) trade on May 6? What may have triggered the Flash Crash? What role did HFTs play in the Flash Crash? We conclude that HFTs did not trigger the Flash Crash, but their responses to the unusually large selling pressure on that day exacerbated market volatility

How Sharing Information Can Garble Experts’ Advice

We model the strategic provision of advice in environments where a principal's optimal action depends on an unobserved, binary state of interest. Experts receive signals about the state and each recommends an action. The principal and all experts dislike making errors in their decision and recommendations, respectively, but may have different costs of different errors. Is it in the principal's interest to let experts share information? Although sharing improves experts' ability to avoid errors, we identify a simple environment in which any principal, regardless of how he trades off the different errors, is worse off if he permits information sharing

Ultracentrifugation for ultrafine nanodiamond fractionation

In this paper we propose a method for ultrafine fractionation of nanodiamonds using the differential centrifugation in the fields up to 215000g. The developed protocols yield 4-6 nm fraction giving main contribution to the light scattering intensity. The desired 4-6 nm fraction can be obtained from various types of initial nanodiamonds: three types of detonation nanodiamonds differing in purifying methods, laser synthesis nanodiamonds and nanodiamonds made by milling. The characterization of the obtained hydrosols was conducted with Dynamic Light Scattering, Zeta potential measurements, powder XRD and TEM. According to powder XRD and TEM data ultracentrifugation also leads to a further fractionation of the primary diamond nanocrystallites in the hydrosols from 4 to 2 nm.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

Climate Change Impacts on North Dakota: Agriculture and Hydrology

North Dakota is one of the principal producers of agricultural commodities in the USA, including over half of the total spring wheat production. While the region includes some of the best agricultural lands in the world, the steep temperature and precipitation gradients also make it one of the most sensitive to climate change. Over the 20th century, both the temperature and the pattern of precipitation in the state have changed; one of the most dramatic examples of the consequences of this change is the Devils Lake flooding. In two studies, we estimated the climate change impacts on crop yields and on the hydrology of the Devils Lake basin. The projections of six GCMs, driven by three SRES scenarios were statistically downscaled for multiple locations throughout the state, for the 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s climate. Averaged over all GCMs, there is a small increase in precipitation, by 0.6 - 1.1% in 2020s, 3.1 - 3.5% in 2050s, and 3.0 - 7.6% in 2080s. This change in precipitation varies with the seasons, with cold seasons becoming wetter and warm seasons not changing

Диссертация представляет собой комплексное научное исследование методики расследования мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений. В работе содержится ряд теоретических положений и практических рекомендаций, сформулированных с учетом особенностей совершения мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений и методики его расследования. Сформулировано понятие «мошенничество в сфере бытовых отношений» с криминалистической точки зрения. Разработана криминалистическая характеристика мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений, охарактеризованы сущность и взаимосвязь элементов криминалистической характеристики данного подвида мошенничества (особенности личностей мошенника и потерпевшего, предмет преступного посягательства, обстановка, способы подготовки, совершения и сокрытия преступления). Разработана классификация мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений, основаниями которой являются признаки структурных элементов криминалистической характеристики. Подчеркнуто, что бытовая сфера характеризуется наличием нескольких видов взаимоотношений (родственные, брачные, соседские, дружеские отношения, отношения с коллегами по работе (службе), отношения при спорадических знакомствах). Выделены и проанализированы обстоятельства, подлежащие установлению при совершении мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений; определены типичные следственные ситуации начального и последующего этапов расследования, соответствующие им специфические задачи расследования и комплексы следственных (розыскных) и негласных следственных (розыскных) действий, направленных на их разрешение. Определена эффективность использования возможностей оперативно-розыскной деятельности в процессе расследования и взаимодействия следователя с сотрудниками оперативных подразделений в расследовании мошенничества в сфере бытовых отношений. Рассмотрены особенности проведения следственных (розыскных) действий и предложены рекомендации по: подготовке и проведению допросов подозреваемых, потерпевших, свидетелей, осмотра предметов и документов, предъявления для опознания; назначению почерковедческих, дактилоскопических экспертиз и технико-криминалистического исследования документов. The structure of criminalistic characteristic of fraud in domestic sphere relations with due regard for the peculiarities of content and correlation of elements (the subject of criminal intrusion, crime situation, identities of criminal and victims, methods of preparation, commission and reticence of a crime) is explored. The investigative situations forming during the investigation are emphasized and the algorithm of investigator's actions in proper situations during resolving certain tasks of investigation is defined. The peculiarities of conduct of investigative (detective) actions during the fraud investigation in sphere of domestic relations (interrogation of suspected, victims, witnesses, examination of scene, items and documents, search, lineup, schedule and expertise) are considered. Genetic programming optimization for a sentiment feedback strength based trading strategy

This study is motivated by the empirical findings that news and social me- dia Twitter messages (tweets) exhibit persistent predictive power on financial market movement. Based on the evidence that tweets are faster than news in revealing new market information, whereas news is regarded broadly a more reliable source of information than tweets, we propose a superior trading strat- egy based on the sentiment feedback strength between the news and tweets using generic programming optimization method. The key intuition behind this feedback strength based approach is that the joint momentum of the two sentiment series leads to significant market signals, which can be exploited to generate superior trading profits. With the trade-off between information speed and its reliability, this study aims to develop an optimal trading strategy us- ing investors' sentiment feedback strength with the objective to maximize risk adjusted return measured by the Sterling ratio. We find that the sentiment feed- back based strategies yield superior market returns with low maximum draw- down over the period from 2012 to 2015. In comparison, the strategies based on the sentiment feedback indicator generate over 14.7% Sterling ratio compared with 10.4% and 13.6% from the technical indicator-based strategies and the ba- sic buy-and-hold strategy respectively. After considering transaction costs, the sentiment indicator based strategy outperforms the technical indicator based strategy consistently. Backtesting shows that the advantage is statistically significant. The result suggests that the sentiment feedback indicator provides support in controlling loss with lower maximum drawdown
