SIMP (Strongly Interacting Massive Particle) Search
We consider laboratory experiments that can detect stable, neutral strongly
interacting massive particles (SIMPs). We explore the SIMP annihilation cross
section from its minimum value (restricted by cosmological bounds) to the barn
range, and vary the mass values from a GeV to a TeV. We also consider the

A Mechanism Linking Two Known Vulnerability Factors for Alcohol Abuse: Heightened Alcohol Stimulation and Low Striatal Dopamine D2 Receptors
Alcohol produces both stimulant and sedative effects in humans and rodents. In humans, alcohol abuse disorder is associated with a higher stimulant and lower sedative responses to alcohol. Here, we show that this association is conserved in mice and demonstrate a causal link with another liability factor: low expression of striatal dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs). Using transgenic mouse lines, we find that the selective loss of D2Rs on striatal medium spiny neurons enhances sensitivity to ethanol stimulation and generates resilience to ethanol sedation. These mice also display higher preference and escalation of ethanol drinking, which continues despite adverse outcomes. We find that striatal D1R activation is required for ethanol stimulation and that this signaling is enhanced in mice with low striatal D2Rs. These data demonstrate a link between two vulnerability factors for alcohol abuse and offer evidence for a mechanism in which low striatal D2Rs trigger D1R hypersensitivity, ultimately leading to compulsive-like drinkingFil: Bocarsly, Miriam E.. Dark Energy in an Axion Model with Explicit Z(N) Symmetry Breaking
We point out that a well known axion model with an explicit Z(N) symmetry
breaking term predicts both dark energy and cold dark matter. We estimate the
parameters of this model which fit the observed densities of the dark
components of the universe. We find that the parameters do not conflict with

Resolving Stellar Populations outside the Local Group: MAD observations of UKS2323-326
We present a study aimed at deriving constraints on star formation at
intermediate ages from the evolved stellar populations in the dwarf irregular
galaxy UKS2323-326. These observations were also intended to demonstrate the
scientific capabilities of the multi-conjugated adaptive optics demonstrator
(MAD) implemented at the ESO Very Large Telescope as a test-bench of adaptive
optics (AO) techniques. We perform accurate, deep photometry of the field using
J and Ks band AO images of the central region of the galaxy. The near-infrared
(IR) colour-magnitude diagrams clearly show the sequences of asymptotic giant
branch (AGB) stars, red supergiants, and red giant branch (RGB) stars down to
~1 mag below the RGB tip. Optical-near-IR diagrams, obtained by combining our
data with Hubble Space Telescope observations, provide the best separation of
stars in the various evolutionary stages. The counts of AGB stars brighter than
the RGB tip allow us to estimate the star formation at intermediate ages.
Assuming a Salpeter initial mass function, we find that the star formation
episode at intermediate ages produced ~6x10^5 M_sun of stars in the observed

Design of Electronic Learning Courses for IT Students Considering the Dominant Learning Style
Methods of using e-learning courses to support learning activities of students at higher educational institutions is the subject of a large number of scientific and educational studies. In particular, much attention is paid to the structure, content and format of educational resources of e-learning courses. However, the problem of dependency of their efficiency on the learning styles of students still needs to be further researched. This paper deals with the learning styles characteristic for IT students on the basis of determining their leading modality; designs the structure of e-learning courses for IT students considering the dominating learning styles and provides the results of pedagogical experiment by measuring the performance and satisfaction in learning activity
Enhanced roughness of lipid membranes caused by external electric fields
The behavior of lipid membranes in the presence of an external electric field
is studied and used to examine the influence of such fields on membrane
parameters such as roughness and show that for a micro sized membrane,
roughness grows as the field increases. The dependence of bending rigidity on
the electric field is also studied and an estimation of thickness of the
accumulated charges around lipid membranes in a free-salt solution is

Scale invariant scalar metric fluctuations during inflation: non-perturbative formalism from a 5D vacuum
We extend to 5D an approach of a 4D non-perturbative formalism to study
scalar metric fluctuations of a 5D Riemann-flat de Sitter background metric. In
contrast with the results obtained in 4D, the spectrum of cosmological scalar
metric fluctuations during inflation can be scale invariant and the background

Dynamics of Phase Transitions Induced by a Heat Bath
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a symmetry restoring phase
transition in a scalar field theory, the ``system'', linearly coupled to
another scalar field taken as a ``heat bath''. The ``system'' is initially in
an ordered low temperature phase, and the heat bath is at a temperature close
to the critical temperature for the system. We estimate the time at which the
phase transition to the disordered (symmetric) phase takes place. We derive,
and integrate the one-loop effective equations of motion for the order
parameter that include the effects of the heat bath. A semiclassical Langevin
equation is derived and it is found that it contains a non-dissipative,
non-Markovian kernel, the noise term is colored and correlated on time scales
determined by the temperature of the heat bath. The range of validity of the
Langevin equation and a consistent procedure to incorporate corrections are
