: Male participation in contraception is still lacking. Pare (Momordica charantia L) is known having an inhibitory effect spermatogenesis and seeds of papaya (Carica papaya L) contain the alkaloid compounds that are anti-fertility, both can be used as a male contraceptive. The purpose of this study was to determine sperm quality comparison Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were given a fruit extract of pare (Momordica charantia L) with the seed extract of papaya (Carica papaya L). The research used a completely randomized experimental design. There are nine samples of Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) males were divided into three groups and one group consisting three Wistar rats. Over the past 50 days, extracts of pare (Momordica charantia L) is given to the group 1 at 70mg / kg/day, while in the group 2 given seed extract of papaya (Carica papaya L) of 70mg / kg/day and the control group was given no treatment. The results showed significant differences in sperm motility among the treatment groups 1 with extract of bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia L) and 2 treatment groups with the extract of papaya seeds (Carica papaya L), namely a decrease in sperm motility (p = 0.002). Conclusion, the fruit extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L) and seed extract of papaya (Carica papaya L) affects the quality of spermatozoa

Monkey See, Monkey Do: Early New World Animal Descriptions as Transitional Texts

    Get PDF
This dissertation investigates the zoological representation found in New World texts by early European explorers working for the Spanish Crown from 1492 – 1557 CE. It examines the education and animal literary influences that these writers had access to both before and after their arrival in the Americas, and how that knowledge influenced their own descriptions of indigenous fauna. Through my analysis of a variety of original texts, both written in Europe and in the Americas, I delineate the every-evolving perception of the human-animal relationship through the depictions of New World animals by European Pre- and Early-Modern writers. While I base my analysis in Critical Animal Studies, my aim is to contextualize these authors as a bridge between western, medieval understanding of fauna and the subsequent representation of New World animals

Longitudinal Changes in Resting-State Functional Connectivity of the Salience Network Among Individuals At-Risk for PTSD Development

Predicting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a traumatic event has been a focus of recent neuroimaging research in the hopes of identifying key biomarkers that contribute to the disorder’s development. One possibility relies on understanding the connectivity between intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs), including the salience network (SN). Prior research has consistently identified hyperconnectivity among SN regions among those with chronic PTSD, and this study aimed to examine the role of SN connectivity over time on PTSD symptom development. To do so, this study recruited individuals presenting to the Emergency Department with traumatic injuries to complete two resting-state fMRI scans: one at two-weeks post-trauma (T1) and one at six-months post-trauma (T2). The current analyses used an intrinsic connectivity contrast (ICC) within a SN mask of salience-related regions to assess the connectivity of particular SN regions with the entirety of the network. There were no significant relationships between T2 connectivity and total PTSD symptom severity at T2, nor was there any significant findings for the relationship between T1 connectivity and total PTSD symptom severity at T2. While the change in total PTSD symptom severity scores did not significantly relate to changes in SN connectivity over time, a significant cluster within the dACC was found to be hyperconnected with the rest of the SN for the interaction between Time and Reexperiencing symptom severity score. This result remained significant when additional covariates were added to the model. Overall, this study highlights the importance of tracking changes in neurocircuitry from the acute trauma response to chronic PTSD, suggesting that chronic exposure to reexperiencing symptoms of PTSD leads to small changes in SN connectivity that slowly rewire ICN circuitry over time

Not Only a Child : The Vulnerability and Complicity of Japanese Settler Girls in Colonial Korea

There is no such thing as "only" children within colonial systems of power, and it is important to acknowledge the ways in which childhood and Japanese colonization were entangled. This article uses the memoirs Mother's Keijō, My Seoul and Gyeongju is the Sound of Mother Calling to examine the connections between vulnerability and complicity as experienced by two Japanese settler girls who were born and raised in the Japanese colony of Korea (Chōsen) between 1925 and 1945. Through analyzing their physical and emotional experiences as female children in a colony run by adult men, I show that Japanese settler girls had neither agency over their own life choices nor much awareness of colonial power structures and their own position as settlers. I argue that it was their marginality from structures of power and their ignorance about their positions within the colonial system that caused Japanese settler girls to be unconsciously complicit in colonial power. The experiences of these two girls highlight the ways that settler colonial systems use the vulnerability of children to perpetrate the colonial status quo. Yet, moments of emotional discrepancy occasionally allowed these Japanese settler girls to recognize and negotiate their level of complicity with the Japanese Empire, suggesting that introspection provides some emotional agency to marginalized members of the colonizing class.journal articl

Weekend Warrior and the process of creating it was an experience built on memory and inspiration. The research supporting the performance delves into gender identity and gender performance with a focus on the experiences of female warriors, duelists, and stunt performers. The research within this paper comes from my perspective as an able-bodied, white, female bodied, femme presenting individual and by no means is a full spectrum account of the experience of others who occupy this space with me. The research within was done in support of my opinion and desire to learn more about the women who have inspired me as a director, choreographer, performance maker and human

Cost Estimating Relationships for Recurring T100 Flyaway Costs

    Get PDF
This research investigates a dataset of over 80 Air Force and Navy aircraft and applies regression techniques to create two cost estimating relationships (CERs) for predicting recurring T100 flyaway costs, depending on where in the acquisition lifecycle the estimate takes place. The first CER explains 89 percent of the variation in the dataset and can be applied prior to Milestone B (MS B). The second CER explains 88 percent of the variation in the dataset and can be applied between MS B and MS C. Significant cost drivers identified include stealth, cohort, empty weight, the natural log of speed, legacy aircraft, fighter aircraft, and Engineering and Manufacturing Development costs. This research is the largest aircraft regression study to date for recurring T100 flyaway costs and can be used by cost analysts as a reliable cross-check in early estimates

CHARACTERISTICS, PREDICTORS, AND GROWTH TRAJECTORIES OF CHILDREN WHO EXIT SPECIAL EDUCATION AND THEIR GENERAL AND SPECIAL EDUCATION PEERS

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics and predictive factors for children receiving special education services, and if they received special education services, factors associated with them discontinuing those services before eighth grade. In addition, a second purpose was to determine whether there are differences in the reading and mathematics growth trajectories of children who exit special education, children who remain in special education, and children who attend general education classes and how those growth trajectories vary by characteristics such as race and gender. I used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study - Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K), a study of a nationally representative sample of children attending kindergarten during the 1998 school year and followed through eighth grade. I used a subsample of the data to compare the characteristics and predictive factors of children receiving special education services or exiting from special education using chi-squares, t-tests, and logistic regression analyses. Using hierarchical linear modeling, I analyzed data on the academic growth trajectories of children who exited special education, remained in special education or never received special education. The results of my study indicate that large number of children exit special education between kindergarten and eighth grade and the children who exit special education differ from their general and special education peers both in their characteristics and their academic growth rates in reading and mathematics. Finally, I discuss the implications of these findings for policy and future research

Neogene Climate Change in Eastern North America: A Quantitative Reconstruction

    Get PDF
Though much is known of the global paleoclimate during the Neogene, little is understood about eastern North America at that time. During the Neogene the global paleoclimate was transitioning from the warm temperatures and higher levels of precipitation of the Paleogene to the cooler temperatures and lower levels of precipitation during the Pleistocene. Eleven fossil sites from Neogene eastern North America were analyzed using the Coexistence Approach: Pollack Farm, Brandon Lignite, Legler Lignite, Alum Bluff, Bryn Mawr, Big Creek on Sicily Island, Brandywine, Gray Fossil Site, Citronelle, Peace Creek, and Ohoopee River Dune Field. Analyses showed a general trend that early and middle Miocene sites were warmer than the area today, while middle and late Miocene sites were comparable to the area today, and Pliocene sites were comparable to or cooler than the area today. However, there is no clear trend of increased precipitation during the Neogene
