Re-evaluation of the Gottfried sum using neural networks
We provide a determination of the Gottfried sum from all available data,
based on a neural network parametrization of the nonsinglet structure function
F_2. We find S_G=0.244 +- 0.045, closer to the quark model expectation S_G=1/3
than previous results. We show that the uncertainty from the small x region is

Photonic band gaps analysis of Thue-Morse multilayers made of porous silicon
Dielectric aperiodic Thue-Morse structures up to 128 layers have
been fabricated by using porous silicon technology. The photonic band gap
properties of Thue-Morse multilayers have been theoretically investigated
by means of the transfer matrix method and the integrated density of states.
The theoretical approach has been compared and discussed with the
reflectivity measurements at variable angles for both the transverse electric
and transverse magnetic polarizations of light. The photonic band gap
regions, wide 70 nm and 90 nm, included between 0 and 30°, have been
observed for the sixth and seventh orders, respectively
Vibrational Excitons in CH-Stretching Fundamental and Overtone Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra
A set of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra in the CH-stretching fundamental
region for about twenty compounds belonging to the class of essential oils was empirically analyzed by
the use of a sort of vibrational exciton mechanism, involving three centers. Through a general formula
applicable to many coupled dipole oscillators, the rotational strengths of the previously identified
vibrational excitons are evaluated. The results are then critically reviewed by the use of recent ab
initio methodology, as applied to selected molecules of the original set. Further insight is gained by
model calculations adding up the contribution of the coupling between electric dipole moments associated
with normal mode behavior and that of the polarizability from polarizable groups. The former
part is responsible for the excitonic behavior of the VCD spectra. For the same selected molecules we
have also investigated whether some excitonic behavior is taking place in the second overtone region,
and have concluded that this is not the case
The International Trade Network in Space and Time
This paper studies how the structure of the International Trade Network (ITN) changes
in geographical space and along time. We employ geographical distance between countries
in the world to filter the links in the ITN, building a sequence of sub-networks, each one
featuring trade links occurring at similar distance. We then test if the topological properties
of ITN subnetworks change as distance increases. We find that distance strongly impacts,
in non-linear ways, the topology of the ITN. We show that the ITN is disassortative at long distances while it is assortative at short ones. Similarly, the main determinant of the overall high ITN clustering level are triangular trade triples between geographically close countries.
This means that trade partnership choices are differentiated over different distance ranges.
Such evidence robustly arises over time and after one controls for the economic size and income of trading partners
Compensation temperatures and exchange bias in La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6
We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double
perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak
ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic
matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have
found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization,
depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low
temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the
presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may
be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other
measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the
magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic
phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the
antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures and supplemental materia
Leaf water relation traits in typical Sicilian varieties of Vitis vinifera L.
In Italy, grapevines are extensively cultivated, with Sicily representing one of the most significant wine regions. The high number of autochthonous grapevine varieties represents an important source of genetic diversity, and the many Sicilian varieties have anatomical and physiological traits that allow them to resist to different levels of drought stress. We investigated the water relation parameters of four cultivars of Vitis vinifera L. (Catarratto, Corinto, Nero d'Avola and Zibibbo) and characterized their leaf hydraulics. Measurements were conducted during summer on plants growing in the experimental field of the IBBR-CNR near Palermo. Daily patterns of leaf water potential (Yleaf) and stomatal conductance (gs) were measured in the field. Pressure-volume curves were constructed by the bench dehydration method to obtain leaf water potential at turgor loss point (Ytlp), osmotic potential at full rehydration (p0) and bulk modulus of elasticity (εmax). Leaf samples were collected to determine vein density using ImageJ. Major vein density was measured on digitally scanned leaves, while minor vein density was measured on photomicrographs of cleared and stained leaf portions
Sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sepf-aggregation in vacuo: Molecular Dynamics simulation
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted for systems in vacuo consisting of n AOT
anions (bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate ions) and n 1 or n Na+ ions up to n = 20. For n = 15,
positively charged systems with Li+, K+, and Cs+ cations were also considered. All systems were
observed to form reverse micelle-like aggregates whose centre is occupied by cations and polar
heads in a very compact solid-like way, while globally the aggregate has the form of an elongated
and rather flat ellipsoid. Various types of statistical analyses were carried out on the systems to
enlighten structural and dynamical properties including gyration radius, atomic pair correlation
functions, atomic B-factor and moment of inertia tensor. For completeness and comparison the
stability of reverse micelle is tested in the case of neutral n = 20 system in CCl4 solution
Interleukin-1 blockade in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: rationale and design of the Diastolic Heart Failure Anakinra Response Trial 2 (D-HART2)
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) now accounts for the majority of con-firmed HF cases in the United States. However, there are no highly effective evidence-basedtreatments currently available for these patients. Inflammation correlates positively withadverse outcomes in HF patients. Interleukin (IL)-1, a prototypical inflammatory cytokine, hasbeen implicated as a driver of diastolic dysfunction in preclinical animal models and a pilot clini-cal trial. The Diastolic Heart Failure Anakinra Response Trial 2 (D-HART2) is a phase 2, 2:1 ran-domized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial that will test the hypothesis that IL-1blockade with anakinra (recombinant human IL-1 receptor antagonist) improves (1) cardiorespi-ratory fitness, (2) objective evidence of diastolic dysfunction, and (3) elevated inflammation inpatients with HFpEF (http://www.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02173548). The co–primary endpointswill be placebo-corrected interval changes in peak oxygen consumption and ventilatory effi-ciency at week 12. In addition, secondary and exploratory analyses will investigate the effectsof IL-1 blockade on cardiac structure and function, systemic inflammation, endothelial function,quality of life, body composition, nutritional status, and clinical outcomes. The D-HART2 clinicaltrial will add to the growing body of evidence on the role of inflammation in cardiovascular dis-ease, specifically focusing on patients with HFpEF
Current driven rotating kink mode in a plasma column with a non-line-tied free end
First experimental measurements are presented for the kink instability in a
linear plasma column which is insulated from an axial boundary by finite sheath
resistivity. Instability threshold below the classical Kruskal-Shafranov
threshold, axially asymmetric mode structure and rotation are observed. These
are accurately reproduced by a recent kink theory, which includes axial plasma
flow and one end of the plasma column that is free to move due to a
