Stars In Other Universes: Stellar structure with different fundamental constants
Motivated by the possible existence of other universes, with possible
variations in the laws of physics, this paper explores the parameter space of
fundamental constants that allows for the existence of stars. To make this
problem tractable, we develop a semi-analytical stellar structure model that
allows for physical understanding of these stars with unconventional
parameters, as well as a means to survey the relevant parameter space. In this
work, the most important quantities that determine stellar properties -- and
are allowed to vary -- are the gravitational constant , the fine structure
constant , and a composite parameter that determines nuclear
reaction rates. Working within this model, we delineate the portion of
parameter space that allows for the existence of stars. Our main finding is
that a sizable fraction of the parameter space (roughly one fourth) provides
the values necessary for stellar objects to operate through sustained nuclear
fusion. As a result, the set of parameters necessary to support stars are not
particularly rare. In addition, we briefly consider the possibility that
unconventional stars (e.g., black holes, dark matter stars) play the role
filled by stars in our universe and constrain the allowed parameter space.Comment: accepted to JCAP, 29 pages, 6 figure
A Century of Cosmology
In the century since Einstein's anno mirabilis of 1905, our concept of the
Universe has expanded from Kapteyn's flattened disk of stars only 10 kpc across
to an observed horizon about 30 Gpc across that is only a tiny fraction of an
immensely large inflated bubble. The expansion of our knowledge about the
Universe, both in the types of data and the sheer quantity of data, has been
just as dramatic. This talk will summarize this century of progress and our

A Vehicular Traffic Flow Model Based on a Stochastic Acceleration Process
A new vehicular traffic flow model based on a stochastic jump process in
vehicle acceleration and braking is introduced. It is based on a master
equation for the single car probability density in space, velocity and
acceleration with an additional vehicular chaos assumption and is derived via a
Markovian ansatz for car pairs. This equation is analyzed using simple driver
interaction models in the spatial homogeneous case. Velocity distributions in
stochastic equilibrium, together with the car density dependence of their
moments, i.e. mean velocity and scattering and the fundamental diagram are

Continuous optical loading of a Bose-Einstein Condensate
The continuous pumping of atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate via
spontaneous emission from a thermal reservoir is analyzed. We consider the case
of atoms with a three-level scheme, in which one of the atomic
transitions has a very much shorter life-time than the other one. We found that
in such scenario the photon reabsorption in dense clouds can be considered
negligible. If in addition inelastic processes can be neglected, we find that
optical pumping can be used to continuously load and refill Bose-Einstein
condensates, i.e. provides a possible way to achieve a continuous atom laser.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Guiding Neutral Atoms with a Wire
We demonstrate guiding of cold neutral atoms along a current carrying wire.
Atoms either move in Kepler-like orbits around the wire or are guided in a
potential tube on the side of the wire which is created by applying an
additional homogeneous bias field. These atom guides are very versatile and

A note on maximal estimates for stochastic convolutions
In stochastic partial differential equations it is important to have pathwise
regularity properties of stochastic convolutions. In this note we present a new
sufficient condition for the pathwise continuity of stochastic convolutions in

Near Resonant Spatial Images of Confined Bose-Einstein Condensates in the '4D' Magnetic Bottle
We present quantitative measurements of the spatial density profile of
Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms confined in a new '4D' magnetic
bottle. The condensates are imaged in transmission with near resonant laser
light. We demonstrate that the Thomas-Fermi surface of a condensate can be
determined to better than 1%. More generally, we obtain excellent agreement
with mean-field theory. We conclude that precision measurements of atomic
scattering lengths and interactions between phase separated cold atoms in a

Scholarly communication in transition: The use of question marks in the titles of scientific articles in medicine, life sciences and physics 1966–2005
The titles of scientific articles have a special significance. We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their
titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles
