Diffusion Coefficients of a Highly Nonideal Ternary Liquid Mixture: Cyclohexane–Toluene–Methanol
To better understand diffusion phenomena in highly nonideal ternary liquid mixtures, cyclohexane–toluene–methanol is studied by equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulation. Intradiffusion and Maxwell–Stefan (MS) diffusion coefficients, being strictly kinetic properties, are predicted by EMD over the entire composition range at ambient conditions. The thermodynamic contribution to the Fick diffusion coefficients is studied with an excess Gibbs energy model. Predictive results from the combination of these two approaches are in convincing agreement with experimental Fick diffusion coefficient data. Different aspects determining the composition dependence of diffusion coefficients, such as their behavior at the binary limits, hydrogen bonding, and stability criteria, are discussed. While the intradiffusion coefficients exhibit only a weak composition dependence, the MS diffusion coefficients are strongly affected by the nonideality of the present mixture. Fick diffusion coefficients reveal pronounced diffusive coupling effects and are mainly governed by the thermodynamic contribution, especially in the vicinity of the miscibility gap

Enhancing surface heat transfer by carbon nanofins: towards an alternative to nanofluids?
Background: Nanofluids are suspensions of nanoparticles and fibers which have recently attracted much attention because of their superior thermal properties. Nevertheless, it was proven that, due to modest dispersion of nanoparticles, such high expectations often remain unmet. In this article, by introducing the notion of nanofin, a possible solution is envisioned, where nanostructures with high aspect-ratio are sparsely attached to a solid surface (to avoid a significant disturbance on the fluid dynamic structures), and act as efficient thermal bridges within the boundary layer. As a result, particles are only needed in a small region of the fluid, while dispersion can be controlled in advance through design and manufacturing processes. Results: Toward the end of implementing the above idea, we focus on single carbon nanotubes to enhance heat transfer between a surface and a fluid in contact with it. First, we investigate the thermal conductivity of the latter nanostructures by means of classical non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Next, thermal conductance at the interface between a single wall carbon nanotube (nanofin) and water molecules is assessed by means of both steady-state and transient numerical experiments. Conclusions: Numerical evidences suggest a pretty favorable thermal boundary conductance (order of 107 W·m-2·K-1) which makes carbon nanotubes potential candidates for constructing nanofinned surface
The Italian registry of pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacteria - IRENE:The study protocol
Background:
A substantial increase in pulmonary and extra-pulmonary diseases due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) has been documented worldwide, especially among subjects suffering from chronic respiratory diseases and immunocompromised patients. Many questions remain regarding the epidemiology of pulmonary disease due to NTM (NTM-PD) mainly because reporting of NTM-PD to health authorities is not mandated in several countries, including Italy. This manuscript describes the protocol of the first Italian registry of adult patients with respiratory infections caused by NTM (IRENE).
Methods:
IRENE is an observational, multicenter, prospective, cohort study enrolling consecutive adult patients with either a NTM respiratory isolate or those with NTM-PD. A total of 41 centers, including mainly pulmonary and infectious disease departments, joined the registry so far. Adult patients with all of the following are included in the registry: 1) at least one positive culture for any NTM species from any respiratory sample; 2) at least one positive culture for NTM isolated in the year prior the enrolment and/or prescribed NTM treatment in the year prior the enrolment; 3) given consent to inclusion in the study. No exclusion criteria are applied to the study. Patients are managed according to standard operating procedures implemented in each IRENE clinical center. An online case report form has been developed to collect patients' demographics, comorbidities, microbiological, laboratory, functional, radiological, clinical, treatment and outcome data at baseline and on an annual basis. An IRENE biobank has also been developed within the network and linked to the clinical data of the registry.
Conclusions:
IRENE has been developed to inform the clinical and scientific community on the current management of adult patients with NTM respiratory infections in Italy and acts as a national network to increase the disease's awareness
Landholder Typologies Used in the Development of Natural Resource Management Programs in Australia - A Review
This article reviews the literature on the identification of landholder typologies that can be used to assist the design and delivery of natural resource management (NRM) programs. Australian researchers have developed typologies of landholders based on a variety of criteria. The rationale for developing landholder typologies is first discussed before reviewing the various approaches that have been used by Australian researchers and comparing their findings. The methods employed have differed according to the theories used to guide the research and the 'clients' or 'sponsors' of the research. The landholder types they describe, however, have a number of similarities. These similarities suggest that the studies have identified the same fundamental divisions in the rural community, and that it may be possible to integrate landholder typologies for a variety of NRM and non-NRM applications. It is concluded that further research could usefully investigate whether concepts of social class or sub-cultures may be appropriate to define and describe the variations in landholder types
Extensive carrier testing and CF birth prevalence: evidence for a negative correlation
Aim of the study was to evaluate if extensive CF carrier testing may be connected
with the progressive decrease of CF birth incidence recorded in North Eastern Italy.
From 1993 to 2007 an average 52,000 newborns per year underwent Neonatal
Screening (NS), and 198 newborns with CF were detected (1/3937). A time related
contraction in birth prevalence was confirmed, with an average annual percent
decrease of 0.15 per 10,000 neonates (Poisson regression analysis p 0.003). In
the NS area two sections were identified: the Western Region (WR), where CF
carrier testing is not offered to couples from the general population, and the
Eastern Region (ER), where CF carrier testing is widely offered to couples from
the general population. In ER from 1995 to 2007 such testing practice has been
steadily expanding, with a total of 87,721 CF carrier tests performed, 3460 carriers
identified, and 238 carrier couples detected (data collection in progress). The
prevalence of CF decreased by time (p<0.001) but the rate of decrease was more
enhanced in ER as suggested by the existence of a statistically significant (p = 0.014)
interaction term between time and region in the Poisson regression model. The
overall negative trend in North Eastern Italy is due to a contraction of CF births
in its Eastern part. In ER a negative correlation was found between CF incidence
and the number of carrier tests (p 0.012). Prenatal diagnosis data collection is in
progress. These data support the hypothesis that carrier screening may modify the
incidence of CF

Tungsten oxide mediated quasi-van der Waals Epitaxy of WS2 on Sapphire
Conventional epitaxy plays a crucial role in current state-of-the art semiconductor technology, as it provides a path for accurate control at the atomic scale of thin films and nanostructures, to be used as the building blocks in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, sensors, etc. Four decades ago, the terms “van der Waals” (vdW) and “quasi-vdW (Q-vdW) epitaxy” were coined to explain the oriented growth of vdW layers on 2D and 3D substrates, respectively. The major difference with conventional epitaxy is the weaker interaction between the epi-layer and the epi-substrates. Indeed, research on Q-vdW epitaxial growth of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) has been intense, with oriented growth of atomically thin semiconductors on sapphire being one of the most studied systems. Nonetheless, there are some striking and not yet understood differences in the literature regarding the orientation registry between the epi-layers and epi-substrate and the interface chemistry. Here we study the growth of WS2 via a sequential exposure of the metal and the chalcogen precursors in a metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system, introducing a metal-seeding step prior to the growth. The ability to control the delivery of the precursor made it possible to study the formation of a continuous and apparently ordered WO3 mono- or few-layer at the surface of a c-plane sapphire. Such an interfacial layer is shown to strongly influence the subsequent quasi-vdW epitaxial growth of the atomically thin semiconductor layers on sapphire. Hence, here we elucidate an epitaxial growth mechanism and demonstrate the robustness of the metal-seeding approach for the oriented formation of other TMDC layers. This work may enable the rational design of vdW and quasi-vdW epitaxial growth on different material systems
On the Measurement of Perceived Consumer Risk
The role of perceived risk in consumer behavior has been studied extensively by academic researchers. This paper introduces a methodology for the measurement of the effects of product features, marketing mix components, and individual differences on perceived consumer risk based on theoretical foundations in the literature. A conjoint-type model based on paired comparison judgments is estimated to provide attribute weights. A modification of a stochastic multidimensional scaling-based vector model is then used to measure and summarize individual consumer differences with respect to the impact of brand attributes and marketing mix components on latent levels of perceived consumer risk.
