V/STOL aircraft and fluid dynamics
The impact of military applications on rotorcraft and V/STOL aircraft design is summarized with respect to fixed-wing aircraft. The influence of the mission needs on the configurational design of V/STOL aircraft, the implications regarding some problems in fluid dynamics relating to propulsive flows, and their interaction with the aircraft and the ground plane, are also considered. Additional research in fluid dynamics that can contribute to an improvement in performance of V/STOL aircraft is suggested
User's manual for three dimensional boundary layer (BL3-D) code
An assessment has been made of the applicability of a 3-D boundary layer analysis to the calculation of heat transfer, total pressure losses, and streamline flow patterns on the surface of both stationary and rotating turbine passages. In support of this effort, an analysis has been developed to calculate a general nonorthogonal surface coordinate system for arbitrary 3-D surfaces and also to calculate the boundary layer edge conditions for compressible flow using the surface Euler equations and experimental data to calibrate the method, calculations are presented for the pressure endwall, and suction surfaces of a stationary cascade and for the pressure surface of a rotating turbine blade. The results strongly indicate that the 3-D boundary layer analysis can give good predictions of the flow field, loss, and heat transfer on the pressure, suction, and endwall surface of a gas turbine passage

Semiconductor electrolyte photovoltaic energy converter
Feasibility and practicality of a solar cell consisting of a semiconductor surface in contact with an electrolyte are evaluated. Basic components and processes are detailed for photovoltaic energy conversion at the surface of an n-type semiconductor in contact with an electrolyte which is oxidizing to conduction band electrons. Characteristics of single crystal CdS, GaAs, CdSe, CdTe and thin film CdS in contact with aqueous and methanol based electrolytes are studied and open circuit voltages are measured from Mott-Schottky plots and open circuit photo voltages. Quantum efficiencies for short circuit photo currents of a CdS crystal and a 20 micrometer film are shown together with electrical and photovoltaic properties. Highest photon irradiances are observed with the GaAs cell
Preliminary testing of a prototype portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
A portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for use as an analyzer in mineral resource investigative work was built and tested. The prototype battery powered spectrometer, measuring 11 by 12 by 5 inches and weighing only about 15 pounds, was designed specifically for field use. The spectrometer has two gas proportional counters and two radioactive sources, Cd (10a) and Fe (55). Preliminary field and laboratory tests on rock specimens and rock pulps have demonstrated the capability of the spectrometer to detect 33 elements to date. Characteristics of the system present some limitations, however, and further improvements are recommended
Numerical calculation of transonic boattail flow
A viscid-inviscid interaction procedure for the calculation of subsonic and transonic flow over a boattail was developed. This method couples a finite-difference inviscid analysis with an integral boundary-layer technique. Results indicate that the effect of the boundary layer is as important as an accurate inviscid method for this type of flow. Theoretical results from the solution of the full transonic-potential equation, including boundary layer effects, agree well with the experimental pressure distribution for a boattail. Use of the small disturbance transonic potential equation yielded results that did not agree well with the experimental results even when boundary-layer effects were included in the calculations
Fundamental studies in geodynamics
Research in fundamental studies in geodynamics continued in a number of fields including seismic observations and analysis, synthesis of geochemical data, theoretical investigation of geoid anomalies, extensive numerical experiments in a number of geodynamical contexts, and a new field seismic volcanology.
