The message framing of health communications : how to elicit higher intention to get an annual pap test ?
In an online experiment, women (N=209) were randomly exposed to a pamphlet promoting Pap test. The pamphlet was either gain- or loss-framed and emphasized either the prevention or detection function of the Pap. We hypothesized that the fit between framing and function (i.e. gain-prevention and loss-detection) will result in higher intention to follow the recommendation. Moreover, we predicted that under the non-fit condition (i.e. gain-detection and loss-prevention); people higher in perceived vulnerability will have higher intention to follow the recommendation. L'utilisation du cadrage des conséquences au sein des messages de sante publique : bilan et perspectives pour la recherche en marketing
L'objectif de cette communication est de proposer une synthèse des travaux majeurs portant sur la problématique du cadrage des conséquences dans les communications de santé publique. Le concept d'effet de cadrage « framing effect » (Tversky et Kahneman, 1981 ; 1986) en raison de son rôle possible dans l'efficacité des communications préventives et assimilées a fait l'objet de plusieurs études en psychologie et quelques unes en marketing. En utilisant pour cadre de référence le postulat de la théorie des perspectives, Rothman et Salovey (1997) proposent que la formalisation verbale d'un message de santé assorti d'une recommandation suggérant un comportement peut être à l'origine de l'efficacité plus ou moins grande de cette communication. Il semble donc judicieux de s'intéresser à la problématique de « l'effet de cadrage » appliqué aux campagnes de communication de santé publique, afin, d'une part, de faire la synthèse des travaux majeurs sur le sujet et, d'autre part, de confronter certaines informations issues de la littérature de manière à identifier et éclairer quelques confusions ou ambiguïtés existantes mais aussi, pour proposer des voies de recherches futurescadrage ; conséquences ; messages ; sante publique ; bilan et perspectives ; recherche en marketing
HESS J1632-478: an energetic relic
HESS J1632-478 is an extended and still unidentified TeV source in the
galactic plane. In order to identify the source of the very high energy
emission and to constrain its spectral energy distribution, we used a deep
observation of the field obtained with XMM-Newton together with data from
Molonglo, Spitzer and Fermi to detect counterparts at other wavelengths. The
flux density emitted by HESS J1632-478 peaks at very high energies and is more
than 20 times weaker at all other wavelengths probed. The source spectrum
features two large prominent bumps with the synchrotron emission peaking in the
ultraviolet and the external inverse Compton emission peaking in the TeV. HESS
J1632-478 is an energetic pulsar wind nebula with an age of the order of 10^4
years. Its bolometric (mostly GeV-TeV) luminosity reaches 10% of the current
pulsar spin down power. The synchrotron nebula has a size of 1 pc and contains
an unresolved point-like X-ray source, probably the pulsar with its wind

Testing the resilience of agro-pastoralists communities in arid margins through ABM
This paper presents the latest model developed within Case Study 1 (hereafter CS1) of the SimulPast project: Hunter-Gatherer persistence in arid margins. The case of North Gujarat (India). The aim of this model is to test the resilience of agro-pastoralists (AP) communities in semi-arid ecosystems. We created a simple Agent Based Model in which agents relied on a pure subsistence strategy based on domesticated plants and animals. We tested our model against previously published climatic record for the area and concluded that a pure agropastoral strategy was not enough to sustain the population in conditions of high climatic variability. Further tests were performed to check the climatic conditions in which this type of subsistence strategy is self-sustained in order to extrapolate the model to areas with different specificities than the one understudy
Mirror Position Determination for the Alignment of Cherenkov Telescopes
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) need imaging optics with
large apertures to map the faint Cherenkov light emitted in extensive air
showers onto their image sensors. Segmented reflectors fulfill these needs
using mass produced and light weight mirror facets. However, as the overall
image is the sum of the individual mirror facet images, alignment is important.
Here we present a method to determine the mirror facet positions on a segmented
reflector in a very direct way. Our method reconstructs the mirror facet
positions from photographs and a laser distance meter measurement which goes
from the center of the image sensor plane to the center of each mirror facet.
We use our method to both align the mirror facet positions and to feed the
measured positions into our IACT simulation. We demonstrate our implementation

Squaring the Circle. Social and Environmental Implications of Pre-Pottery Neolithic Building Technology at Tell Qarassa (South Syria)
We present the results of the microstratigraphic, phytolith and wood charcoal study of the remains of a 10.5 ka roof. The roof is part of a building excavated at Tell Qarassa (South Syria), assigned to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period (PPNB). The Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) period in the Levant coincides with the emergence of farming. This fundamental change in subsistence strategy implied the shift from mobile to settled aggregated life, and from tents and huts to hard buildings. As settled life spread across the Levant, a generalised transition from round to square buildings occurred, that is a trademark of the PPNB period. The study of these buildings is fundamental for the understanding of the ever-stronger reciprocal socio-ecological relationship humans developed with the local environment since the introduction of sedentism and domestication. Descriptions of buildings in PPN archaeological contexts are usually restricted to the macroscopic observation of wooden elements (posts and beams) and mineral components (daub, plaster and stone elements). Reconstructions of microscopic and organic components are frequently based on ethnographic analogy. The direct study of macroscopic and microscopic, organic and mineral, building components performed at Tell Qarassa provides new insights on building conception, maintenance, use and destruction. These elements reflect new emerging paradigms in the relationship between Neolithic societies and the environment. A square building was possibly covered here with a radial roof, providing a glance into a topologic shift in the conception and understanding of volumes, from round-based to square-based geometries. Macroscopic and microscopic roof components indicate buildings were conceived for year-round residence rather than seasonal mobility. Data compression for the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope
The First Geiger-mode Avalanche photodiode (G-APD) Cherenkov Telescope (FACT)
has been operating on the Canary island of La Palma since October 2011.
Operations were automated so that the system can be operated remotely. Manual
interaction is required only when the observation schedule is modified due to
weather conditions or in case of unexpected events such as a mechanical
failure. Automatic operations enabled high data taking efficiency, which
resulted in up to two terabytes of FITS files being recorded nightly and
transferred from La Palma to the FACT archive at ISDC in Switzerland. Since
long term storage of hundreds of terabytes of observations data is costly, data
compression is mandatory. This paper discusses the design choices that were
made to increase the compression ratio and speed of writing of the data with
respect to existing compression algorithms.
Following a more detailed motivation, the FACT compression algorithm along
with the associated I/O layer is discussed. Eventually, the performances of the

Early and Middle Holocene Hunter-Gatherer Occupations in Western Amazonia: The Hidden Shell Middens
We report on previously unknown early archaeological sites in the Bolivian lowlands, demonstrating for the first time early and middle Holocene human presence in western Amazonia. Multidisciplinary research in forest islands situated in seasonally-inundated savannahs has revealed stratified shell middens produced by human foragers as early as 10,000 years ago, making them the oldest archaeological sites in the region. The absence of stone resources and partial burial by recent alluvial sediments has meant that these kinds of deposits have, until now, remained unidentified. We conducted core sampling, archaeological excavations and an interdisciplinary study of the stratigraphy and recovered materials from three shell midden mounds. Based on multiple lines of evidence, including radiocarbon dating, sedimentary proxies (elements, steroids and black carbon), micromorphology and faunal analysis, we demonstrate the anthropogenic origin and antiquity of these sites. In a tropical and geomorphologically active landscape often considered challenging both for early human occupation and for the preservation of hunter-gatherer sites, the newly discovered shell middens provide evidence for early to middle Holocene occupation and illustrate the potential for identifying and interpreting early open-air archaeological sites in western Amazonia. The existence of early hunter-gatherer sites in the Bolivian lowlands sheds new light on the region's past and offers a new context within which the late Holocene "Earthmovers" of the Llanos de Moxos could have emerged. © 2013 Lombardo et al
The long helical jet of the Lighthouse nebula, IGR J11014-6103
Jets from rotation-powered pulsars have so far only been observed in systems
moving subsonically trough their ambient medium and/or embedded in their
progenitor supernova remnant (SNR). Supersonic runaway pulsars are also
expected to produce jets, but they have not been confirmed so far. We
investigated the nature of the jet-like structure associated to the INTEGRAL
source IGR J11014-6103 (the "Lighthouse nebula"). The source is a neutron star
escaping its parent SNR MSH 11-61A supersonically at a velocity exceeding 1000
km/s. We observed the Lighthouse nebula and its jet-like X-ray structure
through dedicated high spatial resolution observations in X-rays (Chandra) and
radio band (ATCA). Our results show that the feature is a true pulsar's jet. It
extends highly collimated over >11pc, displays a clear precession-like
modulation, and propagates nearly perpendicular to the system direction of
motion, implying that the neutron star's spin axis in IGR J11014-6103 is almost
perpendicular to the direction of the kick received during the supernova
explosion. Our findings suggest that jets are common to rotation-powered
pulsars, and demonstrate that supernovae can impart high kick velocities to
misaligned spinning neutron stars, possibly through distinct, exotic,
