DREIDING: A generic force field for molecular simulations
We report the parameters for a new generic force field, DREIDING, that we find useful for predicting structures and dynamics of organic, biological, and main-group inorganic molecules. The philosophy in DREIDING is to use general force constants and geometry parameters based on simple hybridization considerations rather than individual force constants and geometric parameters that depend on the particular combination of atoms involved in the bond, angle, or torsion terms. Thus all bond distances are derived from atomic radii, and there is only one force constant each for bonds, angles, and inversions and only six different values for torsional barriers. Parameters are defined for all possible combinations of atoms and new atoms can be added to the force field rather simply. This paper reports the parameters for the "nonmetallic" main-group elements (B, C, N, 0, F columns for the C, Si, Ge, and Sn rows) plus H and a few metals (Na, Ca, Zn, Fe). The accuracy of the DREIDING force field is tested by comparing with (i) 76 accurately determined crystal structures of organic compounds involving H, C, N, 0, F, P, S, CI, and Br, (ii) rotational barriers of a number of molecules, and (iii) relative conformational energies and barriers of a number of molecules. We find excellent results for these systems
Designing protein β-sheet surfaces by Z-score optimization
Studies of lattice models of proteins have suggested that the appropriate energy expression for protein design may include nonthermodynamic terms to accommodate negative design concerns. One method, developed in lattice model studies, maximizes a quantity known as the "Z-score," which compares the lowest energy sequence whose ground state structure is the target structure to an ensemble of random sequences. Here we show that, in certain circumstances, the technique can be applied to real proteins. The resulting energy expression is used to design the β-sheet surfaces of two real proteins. We find experimentally that the designed proteins are stable and well folded, and in one case is even more thermostable than the wild type
Entropy bounds for charged and rotating systems
It was shown in a previous work that, for systems in which the entropy is an
extensive function of the energy and volume, the Bekenstein and the holographic
entropy bounds predict new results. In this paper, we go further and derive
improved upper bounds to the entropy of {\it extensive} charged and rotating
systems. Furthermore, it is shown that for charged and rotating systems
(including non-extensive ones), the total energy that appear in both the
Bekenstein entropy bound (BEB) and the causal entropy bound (CEB) can be
replaced by the {\it internal} energy of the system. In addition, we propose
possible corrections to the BEB and the CEB.Comment: 12 pages, revte
No Scalar Hair Theorem for a Charged Spherical Black Hole
This paper consolidates noscalar hair theorem for a charged spherically
symmetric black hole in four dimension in general relativity as well as in all
scalar tensor theories, both minimally and nonminimally coupled, when the
effective Newtonian constant of gravity is positive. However, there is an
exception when the matter field itself is coupled to the scalar field, such as

Antonio Gramsci’s impact on critical pedagogy
This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe
Binary-induced collapse of a compact, collisionless cluster
We improve and extend Shapiro's model of a relativistic, compact object which
is stable in isolation but is driven dynamically unstable by the tidal field of
a binary companion. Our compact object consists of a dense swarm of test
particles moving in randomly-oriented, initially circular, relativistic orbits
about a nonrotating black hole. The binary companion is a distant, slowly
inspiraling point mass. The tidal field of the companion is treated as a small
perturbation on the background Schwarzschild geometry near the hole; the
resulting metric is determined by solving the perturbation equations of Regge
and Wheeler and Zerilli in the quasi-static limit. The perturbed spacetime
supports Bekenstein's conjecture that the horizon area of a near-equilibrium
black hole is an adiabatic invariant. We follow the evolution of the system and
confirm that gravitational collapse can be induced in a compact collisionless

Living with chronic migraine: a qualitative study on female patients' perspectives from a specialised headache clinic in Spain
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the views and experiences of a group of Spanish women suffering from chronic migraine (CM).
SETTING: Headache clinic at a university hospital in Madrid (Spain).
PARTICIPANTS: Purposeful sampling of patients that attended a specialised headache clinic for the first time between June 2016 and February 2017 was performed. The patients included were females aged 18–65 and with positive diagnoses of CM according to the International Classification of Headache disorders (third edition, beta version), with or without medication overuse. Accordingly, 20 patients participated in the study with a mean age of 38.65 years (SD 13.85).
DESIGN: Qualitative phenomenological study.
METHODS: Data were collected through in-depth interviews, researchers’ field notes and patients’ drawings. A thematic analysis was performed following appropriate guidelines for qualitative research.
RESULTS: Five main themes describing the significance of suffering emerged: (a) the shame of suffering from an invisible condition; (b) treatment: between need, scepticism and fear; (c) looking for physicians’ support and sincerity and fighting misconceptions; (d) limiting the impact on daily life through self-control; and (e) family and work: between understanding and disbelief. The disease is experienced as an invisible process, and the journey to diagnosis can be a long and tortuous one. Drug prescription by the physician is greeted with distrust and scepticism. Patients expect sincerity, support and the involvement of their doctors in relation to their disease. Pain becomes the main focus of the patient’s life, and it requires considerable self-control. The disease has a strong impact in the work and family environment, where the patient may feel misunderstood.
CONCLUSIONS: Qualitative research offers insight into the way patients with CM experience their disease and it may be helpful in establishing a more fruitful relationship with these patients
The influence of distributed leadership on teachers' organizational commitment: a multilevel approach
In the present study the effects of a cooperative leadership team, distributed leadership, participative decision-making, and context variables on teachers' organizational commitment are investigated. Multilevel analyses on data from 1522 teachers indicated that 9% of the variance in teachers' organizational commitment is attributable to differences between schools. The analyses revealed that especially the presence of a cooperative leadership team and the amount of leadership support played a significantly positive key role in predicting teachers' organizational commitment. Also, participative decision-making and distribution of the supportive leadership function had a significant positive impact on teachers' organizational commitment. In contrast, distribution of the supervisory leadership function and teachers' job experience had a significant negative impact
Computationally designed libraries of fluorescent proteins evaluated by preservation and diversity of function
To determine which of seven library design algorithms best introduces new protein function without destroying it altogether, seven combinatorial libraries of green fluorescent protein variants were designed and synthesized. Each was evaluated by distributions of emission intensity and color compiled from measurements made in vivo. Additional comparisons were made with a library constructed by error-prone PCR. Among the designed libraries, fluorescent function was preserved for the greatest fraction of samples in a library designed by using a structure-based computational method developed and described here. A trend was observed toward greater diversity of color in designed libraries that better preserved fluorescence. Contrary to trends observed among libraries constructed by error-prone PCR, preservation of function was observed to increase with a library's average mutation level among the four libraries designed with structure-based computational methods
