    Studies of Birds and Mammals in the Baird and Schwatka Mountains, Alaska

    In 1963 a joint University of Alaska-Smithsonian Institution crew worked at five locations in the Baird and Schwatka mountains in northwestern Alaska, conducting an ecological reconnaissance and faunal and floral inventory. Standard methods of observation and collection were used. Camps in the Kobuk drainage were located in the Redstone River valley and at Walker Lake, both on the margin of the taiga. The Noatak valley was represented by one camp each in the lower, middle, and upper reaches of the river, all in tundra. A summary of pre-1963 ornithological work in the region is presented. Significant records of distribution and/or breeding were obtained for the following birds: Podiceps grisegena, Anas platyrhynchos, Aythya valisineria, Histrionicus histrionicus, Melanitta perspicillata, Mergus merganser, Aphrizia virgata, Bartramia longicauda, Actitis macularia, Tringa flavipes, Phalaropus fuficarius, Lobipes lobatus, Larus hyperboreus,Xema sabini, Sayornis saya, Nuttalornis borealis, Eremophilia alpestris, Tachycineta thalassina, Riparia riparia, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, Phylloscopus borealis, Dendroica petechia, Leucosticte tephrocotis, Zonotrichia atricapilla, Calcarius pictus; and the mammal, Spermophilus undulatus. Good series of Cletihrionomys rutilius (350) and Microtus miurus (147) have been deposited in the University of Alaska Museum. Severe doubt has been raised regarding the validity of the standard three-night trap grid for population estimation under wet conditions in arctic areas

    Long Run Neutrality of Money in Mexico

    The Fisher-Seater (FS) methodology is used to investigate long run money neutrality with respect to real GDP and real output in ten selected industries in Mexico. Size distortions and low power of the FS test, issues first raised by Coe and Nason (2003, 2004), are addressed using the Coe-Nason bootstrapping procedure. The evidence indicates that long run money neutrality can be rejected for real GDP and for up to five of the ten industrial sectors studied. These findings indicate that the effects of monetary policy are likely to differ across sectors even in the long run.money neutrality, Fisher-Seater Test, bootstrapping.

    Scaling results for the Liquid Sheet Radiator (LSR)

    Surface tension forces at the edges of a thin liquid (approx. 100 micrometers) sheet flow result in a triangularly shaped sheet. Such a geometry is ideal for an external flow radiator. The experimental investigation of such sheet flows was extended to large sheets (width = W = 23.5 cm, length = L approx. = 3.5 m). Experimental L/W results are greater than the calculated results. However, more experimental results are necessary for a complete comparison. The calculated emissivity of a sheet of Dow-Corning 705 silicone oil, which is a low temperature (300 to 400K) candidate for a liquid sheet radiator (LSR), is greater than .8 for sheet thicknesses greater than 100 micrometers

    We separate changes of the federal funds rate into two components; one reflects the Fed's superior forecasts about the state of the economy and the other component reflects the Fed's reaction to the public's forecast about the state of the economy. Romer and Romer (2000) found that the Fed reveals information about inflation when it tightens monetary policy. Their research has implications for measuring monetary policy as well. When the Fed raises short-term interest rates it leads to some combination of increased inflationary expectations and an increased real rate. In this paper we estimate a structural VAR that allows us to separate out (identify) components of federal funds changes that are due to inflationary expectations (thus neutral) and that part which is contractionary. Our measure of monetary policy is the part of federal funds changes that exclude the Fed's revelation of its asymmetric information about future inflation.Monetary policy, Yield curve, Inflation, Price puzzle

    Computational/experimental studies of isolated, single component droplet combustion

    Isolated droplet combustion processes have been the subject of extensive experimental and theoretical investigations for nearly 40 years. The gross features of droplet burning are qualitatively embodied by simple theories and are relatively well understood. However, there remain significant aspects of droplet burning, particularly its dynamics, for which additional basic knowledge is needed for thorough interpretations and quantitative explanations of transient phenomena. Spherically-symmetric droplet combustion, which can only be approximated under conditions of both low Reynolds and Grashof numbers, represents the simplest geometrical configuration in which to study the coupled chemical/transport processes inherent within non-premixed flames. The research summarized here, concerns recent results on isolated, single component, droplet combustion under microgravity conditions, a program pursued jointly with F.A. Williams of the University of California, San Diego. The overall program involves developing and applying experimental methods to study the burning of isolated, single component droplets, in various atmospheres, primarily at atmospheric pressure and below, in both drop towers and aboard space-based platforms such as the Space Shuttle or Space Station. Both computational methods and asymptotic methods, the latter pursued mainly at UCSD, are used in developing the experimental test matrix, in analyzing results, and for extending theoretical understanding. Methanol, and the normal alkanes, n-heptane, and n-decane, have been selected as test fuels to study time-dependent droplet burning phenomena. The following sections summarizes the Princeton efforts on this program, describe work in progress, and briefly delineate future research directions
