Non-standard work: What's it worth? Comparing alternative measures of workers' marginal willingness to pay
We compare two alternative ways of measuring workers' marginal willingness to pay (MWP) for four non-standard working arrangements: flexitime, part-time, night work, and rotating shifts. The first method is based on job-to-job transitions within a job search framework, while the second is based on estimating the determinants of subjective well-being. Using BHPS panel data from 1991-2008, we relate differences in the results to conceptual differences between utility and subjective wellbeing proposed recently in the happiness literature. We conclude that there is not a single representation of MWP: utility trade-offs (revealed by choices) need not be the same as wellbeing trade-offs; and we find evidence that subjective wellbeing is traded off against other goods that provide utility. Overall, we find that workers care particularly about their number of weekly hours
Whole genome semiconductor based sequencing of farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Mediterranean genetic stocks using a DNA pooling approach
European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is an important marine species for commercial and sport fisheries and aquaculture production. Recently, the European sea bass genome has been sequenced and assembled. This resource can open new opportunities to evaluate and monitor variability and identify variants that could contribute to the adaptation to farming conditions. In this work, two DNA pools constructed from cultivated European sea bass were sequenced using a next generation semiconductor sequencing approach based on Ion Proton sequencer. Using the first draft version of the D. labrax genome as reference, sequenced reads obtained a total of about 1.6 million of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), spread all over the chromosomes. Transition/transversion (Ti/Tv) was equal to 1.28, comparable to what was already reported in Salmon species. A pilot homozygosity analysis across the D. labrax genome using DNA pool sequence datasets indicated that this approach can identify chromosome regions with putative signatures of selection, including genes involved in ion transport and chloride channel functions, amino acid metabolism and circadian clock and related neurological systems. This is the first study that reported genome wide polymorphisms in a fish species obtained with the Ion Proton sequencer. Moreover, this study provided a methodological approach for selective sweep analysis in this species
GARFIELD + RCo Digital Upgrade: a Modern Set-up for Mass and Charge Identification of Heavy Ion Reaction Products
An upgraded GARFIELD + Ring Counter (RCo) apparatus is presented with
improved performances as far as electronics and detectors are concerned. On one
side fast sampling digital read out has been extended to all detectors,
allowing for an important simplification of the signal processing chain
together with an enriched extracted information. On the other side a relevant
improvement has been made in the forward part of the setup (RCo): an increased
granularity of the CsI(Tl) crystals and a higher homogeneity in the silicon
detector resistivity. The renewed performances of the GARFIELD + RCo array make
it suitable for nuclear reaction measurements both with stable and with
Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB), like the ones foreseen for the SPES facility,

The artificial retina for track reconstruction at the LHC crossing rate
We present the results of an R&D study for a specialized processor capable of
precisely reconstructing events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in
pixel and silicon strip detectors at , thus suitable for
processing LHC events at the full crossing frequency. For this purpose we
design and test a massively parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired to
the current understanding of the mechanisms adopted by the primary visual
cortex of mammals in the early stages of visual-information processing. The
detailed geometry and charged-particle's activity of a large tracking detector
are simulated and used to assess the performance of the artificial retina
algorithm. We find that high-quality tracking in large detectors is possible
with sub-microsecond latencies when the algorithm is implemented in modern,

Isotope analysis in central heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies
Symmetry energy is a key quantity in the study of the equation of state of
asymmetric nuclear matter. Heavy ion collisions at low and intermediate
energies, performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and Laboratori Nazionali
del Sud, can be used to extract information on the symmetry energy coefficient
Csym, which is currently poorly known but relevant both for astrophysics and

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery for the Treatment of Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids
Uterine broids, the most common benign tumor in women of childbearing age, may cause symptoms including pelvic pain, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, pressure, urinary symptoms, and infertility. Various approaches are available to treat symptomatic uterine broids. Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) represents a recently introduced noninvasive safe and e ective technique that can be performed without general anesthesia, in an outpatient setting. We review the principles of MRgFUS, describing patient selection criteria for the treatments performed at our center and we present a series of ve selected patients with symptomatic uterine broids treated with this not yet widely known technique, showing its e cacy in symptom improvement and broid volume reduction
Contribution of thirdhand smoke to overall tobacco smoke exposure in pediatric patients: study protocol.
BackgroundThirdhand smoke (THS) is the persistent residue resulting from secondhand smoke (SHS) that accumulates in dust, objects, and on surfaces in homes where tobacco has been used, and is reemitted into air. Very little is known about the extent to which THS contributes to children's overall tobacco smoke exposure (OTS) levels, defined as their combined THS and SHS exposure. Even less is known about the effect of OTS and THS on children's health. This project will examine how different home smoking behaviors contribute to THS and OTS and if levels of THS are associated with respiratory illnesses in nonsmoking children.MethodsThis project leverages the experimental design from an ongoing pediatric emergency department-based tobacco cessation trial of caregivers who smoke and their children (NIHR01HD083354). At baseline and follow-up, we will collect urine and handwipe samples from children and samples of dust and air from the homes of smokers who smoke indoors, have smoking bans or who have quit smoking. These samples will be analyzed to examine to what extent THS pollution at home contributes to OTS exposure over and above SHS and to what extent THS continues to persist and contribute to OTS in homes of smokers who have quit or have smoking bans. Targeted and nontargeted chemical analyses of home dust samples will explore which types of THS pollutants are present in homes. Electronic medical record review will examine if THS and OTS levels are associated with child respiratory illness. Additionally, a repository of child and environmental samples will be created.DiscussionThe results of this study will be crucial to help close gaps in our understanding of the types, quantity, and clinical effects of OTS, THS exposure, and THS pollutants in a unique sample of tobacco smoke-exposed ill children and their homes. The potential impact of these findings is substantial, as currently the level of risk in OTS attributable to THS is unknown. This research has the potential to change how we protect children from OTS, by recognizing that SHS and THS exposure needs to be addressed separately and jointly as sources of pollution and exposure.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02531594 . First prototype of a silicon tracker using an artificial retina for fast track finding
We report on the R\&D for a first prototype of a silicon tracker based on an
alternative approach for fast track finding. The working principle is inspired
from neurobiology, in particular by the processing of visual images by the
brain as it happens in nature. It is based on extensive parallelisation of data
distribution and pattern recognition. In this work we present the design of a
practical device that consists of a telescope based on single-sided silicon
detectors; we describe the data acquisition system and the implementation of
the track finding algorithms using available digital logic of commercial FPGA
devices. Tracking performance and trigger capabilities of the device are

Visuospatial skills in children affected by primary nocturnal enuresis: Rehabilitative proposals
The sphincterial control problems in childhood are very common, with relevant comorbidities (i.e.: difficulty in academic performance, sleep disturbances, minor neurological signs) involved in the complex process of maturation and learning, such as to cause a great deal of discomfort and related disorders in affected subjects. Enuresis is characterized by the involuntary urination in the absence of a physical disorder, socially unacceptable in places and at one stage of life where such control is acquired by the majority of subjects (about 5 years). The present study aims to evaluate the visuospatial skills in children affected by primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). 31 PMNE children (16 males and 15 females) (mean age 10.87, SD ± 1.68) and 61 healthy children (32 males, 29 females) (mean age 11.03, SD ± 1.85, p = 0687) were evaluated for visuomotor skills with the Visual-Motor Integration Scale (VMI). PMNE subjects show a worse performance on average to VMI, especially in the total visual-motor integration test. This finding emphasizes the importance of a framework for global and more complex than is commonly implemented, across the border but framing the subject of enuretic symptoms in a more global perspective
