Packing defects and the width of biopolymer bundles
The formation of bundles composed of actin filaments and cross-linking
proteins is an essential process in the maintenance of the cells' cytoskeleton.
It has also been recreated by in-vitro experiments, where actin networks are
routinely produced to mimic and study the cellular structures. It has long been
observed that these bundles seem to have a well defined width distribution,
which has not been adequately described theoretically. We propose here that
packing defects of the filaments, quenched and random, contribute an effective
repulsion that counters the cross-linking adhesion energy and leads to a well
defined bundle width. This is a two-dimensional strain-field version of the
classic Rayleigh instability of charged droplets
Evaporative Cooling of a Guided Rubidium Atomic Beam
We report on our recent progress in the manipulation and cooling of a
magnetically guided, high flux beam of atoms. Typically
atoms per second propagate in a magnetic guide providing a
transverse gradient of 800 G/cm, with a temperature K, at an
initial velocity of 90 cm/s. The atoms are subsequently slowed down to cm/s using an upward slope. The relatively high collision rate (5 s)
allows us to start forced evaporative cooling of the beam, leading to a
reduction of the beam temperature by a factor of ~4, and a ten-fold increase of
the on-axis phase-space density.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Bcc He as a Coherent Quantum Solid
In this work we investigate implications of the quantum nature of bcc %
He. We show that it is a unique solid phase with both a lattice structure and
an Off-Diagonal Long Range Order of coherently oscillating local electric
dipole moments. These dipoles arise from the local motion of the atoms in the
crystal potential well, and oscillate in synchrony to reduce the dipolar
interaction energy. The dipolar ground-state is therefore found to be a
coherent state with a well defined global phase and a three-component complex
order parameter. The condensation energy of the dipoles in the bcc phase
stabilizes it over the hcp phase at finite temperatures. We further show that
there can be fermionic excitations of this ground-state and predict that they
form an optical-like branch in the (110) direction. A comparison with
'super-solid' models is also discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Force balance and membrane shedding at the Red Blood Cell surface
During the aging of the red-blood cell, or under conditions of extreme
echinocytosis, membrane is shed from the cell plasma membrane in the form of
nano-vesicles. We propose that this process is the result of the
self-adaptation of the membrane surface area to the elastic stress imposed by
the spectrin cytoskeleton, via the local buckling of membrane under increasing
cytoskeleton stiffness. This model introduces the concept of force balance as a
regulatory process at the cell membrane, and quantitatively reproduces the rate
of area loss in aging red-blood cells.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Ferromagnetism of He Films in the Low Field Limit
We provide evidence for a finite temperature ferromagnetic transition in
2-dimensions as in thin films of He on graphite, a model system
for the study of two-dimensional magnetism. We perform pulsed and CW NMR
experiments at fields of 0.03 - 0.48 mT on He at areal densities of 20.5 -
24.2 atoms/nm. At these densities, the second layer of He has a
strongly ferromagnetic tendency. With decreasing temperature, we find a rapid
onset of magnetization that becomes independent of the applied field at
temperatures in the vicinity of 1 mK. Both the dipolar field and the NMR
linewidth grow rapidly as well, which is consistent with a large (order unity)
polarization of the He spins.Comment: 4 figure
Atomic micromotion and geometric forces in a triaxial magnetic trap
Non-adiabatic motion of Bose-Einstein condensates of rubidium atoms arising
from the dynamical nature of a time-orbiting-potential (TOP) trap was observed
experimentally. The orbital micromotion of the condensate in velocity space at
the frequency of the rotating bias field of the TOP was detected by a
time-of-flight method. A dependence of the equilibrium position of the atoms on
the sense of rotation of the bias field was observed. We have compared our
experimental findings with numerical simulations. The nonadiabatic following of
the atomic spin in the trap rotating magnetic field produces geometric forces
acting on the trapped atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Curvature-coupling dependence of membrane protein diffusion coefficients
We consider the lateral diffusion of a protein interacting with the curvature
of the membrane. The interaction energy is minimized if the particle is at a
membrane position with a certain curvature that agrees with the spontaneous
curvature of the particle. We employ stochastic simulations that take into
account both the thermal fluctuations of the membrane and the diffusive
behavior of the particle. In this study we neglect the influence of the
particle on the membrane dynamics, thus the membrane dynamics agrees with that
of a freely fluctuating membrane. Overall, we find that this curvature-coupling
substantially enhances the diffusion coefficient. We compare the ratio of the
projected or measured diffusion coefficient and the free intramembrane
diffusion coefficient, which is a parameter of the simulations, with analytical
results that rely on several approximations. We find that the simulations
always lead to a somewhat smaller diffusion coefficient than our analytical
approach. A detailed study of the correlations of the forces acting on the
particle indicates that the diffusing inclusion tries to follow favorable
positions on the membrane, such that forces along the trajectory are on average
smaller than they would be for random particle positions.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
The ‘state of exception’ and disaster education: a multilevel conceptual framework with implications for social justice
The term ‘state of exception’ has been used by Italian political theorist Giorgio Agamben to explain the ways in which emergencies, crises and disasters are used by governments to suspend legal processes. In this paper, we innovatively apply Agamben’s theory to the way in which countries prepare and educate the population for various types of emergencies. We focus on two main aspects of Agamben’s work: first, the paradoxical nature of the state of exception, as both a transient and a permanent part of governance. Second, it is a ‘liminal’ concept expressing the limits of law and where ‘law’ meets ‘not-law’. We consider the relationship between laws related to disasters and emergencies, and case studies of the ways in which three countries (England, Germany and Japan) educate their populations for crisis and disaster. In England, we consider how emergency powers have been orientated around the protection of the Critical National Infrastructure and how this has produced localised ‘states of exception’ and, relatedly, pedagogical anomalies. In Germany, we consider the way in which laws related to disaster and civil protection, and the nature of volunteering for civil protection, produce exceptional spaces for non-German bodies. In Japan, we consider the debate around the absence of emergency powers and relate this to Japanese non-exceptional disaster education for natural disasters. Applying Agamben’s work, we conclude by developing a new, multilevel empirical framework for analysing disaster education with implications for social justice
Appraising infrastructure for new towns in Ireland

Any other use of these PDF files is subject to reprint fees.Over a 20 year period 1996–2016, a new 223 ha town is being developed 10 miles west of Dublin's city centre on the south side of Lucan, County Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). This €4 billion ‘Adamstown’ development is the first of four planning schemes in ROI to be approved as a strategic development zone – an integrated planning framework deemed suitable for creating sustainable neighbourhoods in sites of strategic economic or social importance to the state. The creation of sustainable neighbourhoods in ROI is facilitated through the implementation of a checklist of 60 indicators. This paper critically examines the attempts being made to consider sustainability within the development's overall infrastructure plan, specifically: transport, energy and water services, information technology and waste. Inadequacies in the existing development are linked to shortfalls in the sustainability checklist, by way of a comparison of infrastructure-related indicators from the ROI checklist with those derived for the UK and exemplar European projects (i.e. Bedzed, UK and Freiberg, Germany). The subsequent legacy for future residents of Adamstown is then considered in the context of ‘what if’ scenarios
Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
37 pages, 15 figures, revised version, accepted by JINSTALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 micron in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10^5 charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.Peer reviewe
