High resolution imaging with Fresnel interferometric arrays: suitability for exoplanet detection
We propose a new kind of interferometric array that yields images of high
dynamic range and large field. The numerous individual apertures in this array
form a pattern related to a Fresnel zone plate. This array can be used for
astrophysical imaging over a broad spectral bandwidth spanning from the U.V.
(50 nanometers) to the I.R. (20 microns). Due to the long focal lengths
involved, this instrument requires formation-flying of two space borne vessels.
We present the concept and study the S/N ratio in different situations, then
apply these results to probe the suitability of this concept to detect

Zenithal bistability in a nematic liquid crystal device with a monostable surface condition
The ground-state director configurations in a grating-aligned, zenithally bistable nematic device are calculated in two dimensions using a Q tensor approach. The director profiles generated are well described by a one-dimensional variation of the director across the width of the device, with the distorted region near the grating replaced by an effective surface anchoring energy. This work shows that device bistability can in fact be achieved by using a monostable surface term in the one-dimensional model. This implies that is should be possible to construct a device showing zenithal bistability without the need for a micropatterned surface
A Methodology for the Diagnostic of Aircraft Engine Based on Indicators Aggregation
Aircraft engine manufacturers collect large amount of engine related data
during flights. These data are used to detect anomalies in the engines in order
to help companies optimize their maintenance costs. This article introduces and
studies a generic methodology that allows one to build automatic early signs of
anomaly detection in a way that is understandable by human operators who make
the final maintenance decision. The main idea of the method is to generate a
very large number of binary indicators based on parametric anomaly scores
designed by experts, complemented by simple aggregations of those scores. The
best indicators are selected via a classical forward scheme, leading to a much
reduced number of indicators that are tuned to a data set. We illustrate the
interest of the method on simulated data which contain realistic early signs of

Space-time estimation of a particle system model

We study estimation of the model based on space-time evolution on a finite subset of sites. For this, we make use of a marginal pseudo-likelihood. The estimator obtained is consistent and asymptoticaly normal for non-vanishing supercritical CP. Numerical studies confirm these results
Near Infrared Adaptive Optics Imaging of QSO Host Galaxies
We report near-infrared (primarily H-band) adaptive optics (AO) imaging with
the Gemini-N and Subaru Telescopes, of a representative sample of 32 nearby
(z<0.3) QSOs selected from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS),
in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxies. 2D modeling and
visual inspection of the images shows that ~36% of the hosts are ellipticals,
\~39% contain a prominent disk component, and ~25% are of undetermined type.
30% show obvious signs of disturbance. The mean M_H(host) = -24.82 (2.1L_H*),
with a range -23.5 to -26.5 (~0.63 to 10 L_H*). At <L_H*, all hosts have a
dominant disk component, while at >2 L_H* most are ellipticals. "Disturbed"
hosts are found at all M_H(host), while "strongly disturbed" hosts appear to
favor the more luminous hosts. Hosts with prominent disks have less luminous
QSOs, while the most luminous QSOs are almost exclusively in ellipticals or in
mergers (which presumably shortly will be ellipticals). At z<0.13, where our
sample is complete at B-band, we find no clear correlation between M_B(QSO) and
M_H(host). However, at z>0.15, the more luminous QSOs (M_B<-24.7), and 4/5 of
the radio-loud QSOs, have the most luminous H-band hosts (>7L_H*), most of
which are ellipticals. Finally, we find a strong correlation between the
"infrared-excess", L_IR/L_BB, of QSOs with host type and degree of disturbance.
Disturbed and strongly disturbed hosts and hosts with dominant disks have
L_IR/L_BB twice that of non-disturbed and elliptical hosts, respectively. QSOs
with "disturbed" and "strongly-disturbed" hosts are also found to have
morphologies and mid/far-infrared colors that are similar to what is found for
"warm" ultraluminous infrared galaxies, providing further evidence for a
possible evolutionary connection between both classes of objects.Comment: 80 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ Supp
Laser Guide Star for Large Segmented-Aperture Space Telescopes, Part I: Implications for Terrestrial Exoplanet Detection and Observatory Stability
Precision wavefront control on future segmented-aperture space telescopes
presents significant challenges, particularly in the context of high-contrast
exoplanet direct imaging. We present a new wavefront control architecture that
translates the ground-based artificial guide star concept to space with a laser
source aboard a second spacecraft, formation flying within the telescope
field-of-view. We describe the motivating problem of mirror segment motion and
develop wavefront sensing requirements as a function of guide star magnitude
and segment motion power spectrum. Several sample cases with different values
for transmitter power, pointing jitter, and wavelength are presented to
illustrate the advantages and challenges of having a non-stellar-magnitude
noise limited wavefront sensor for space telescopes. These notional designs
allow increased control authority, potentially relaxing spacecraft stability
requirements by two orders of magnitude, and increasing terrestrial exoplanet
discovery space by allowing high-contrast observations of stars of arbitrary

Predicting sentence translation quality using extrinsic and language independent features
We develop a top performing model for automatic, accurate, and language independent prediction of sentence-level statistical machine translation (SMT) quality with or without looking at the translation outputs.
We derive various feature functions measuring the closeness of a given test sentence to the training data and
the difficulty of translating the sentence.
We describe \texttt{mono} feature functions that are based on statistics of only one side of the parallel
training corpora and \texttt{duo} feature functions that incorporate statistics involving both source and
target sides of the training data.
Overall, we describe novel, language independent, and SMT system extrinsic features for predicting the SMT performance, which also rank high during feature ranking evaluations.
We experiment with different learning settings, with or without looking at the translations, which help differentiate the contribution of different feature sets.
We apply partial least squares and feature subset selection, both of which improve the results and we present ranking of the top features selected for each learning setting, providing an exhaustive analysis of the extrinsic features used.
We show that by just looking at the test source sentences and not using the translation outputs at all, we can
achieve better performance than a baseline system using SMT model dependent features that generated the
translations.
Furthermore, our prediction system is able to achieve the nd best performance overall according to the official
results of the Quality Estimation Task (QET) challenge when also looking at the translation outputs.
Our representation and features achieve the top performance in QET among the models using the SVR learning model
Magnetic pair-breaking in superconducting (Ba,K)BiO_3 investigated by magnetotunneling
The de Gennes and Maki theory of gapless superconductivity for dirty
superconductors is used to interpret the tunneling measurements on the strongly
type-II high-Tc oxide-superconductor Ba1-xKxBiO3 in high magnetic fields up to
30 Tesla. We show that this theory is applicable at all temperatures and in a
wide range of magnetic fields starting from 50 percent of the upper critical
field Bc2. In this magnetic field range the measured superconducting density of
states (DOS) has the simple energy dependence as predicted by de Gennes from
which the temperature dependence of the pair-breaking parameter alpha(T), or
Bc2(T), has been obtained. The deduced temperature dependence of Bc2(T) follows
the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg prediction for classical type-II
superconductors in agreement with our previous direct determination. The
amplitudes of the deviations in the DOS depend on the magnetic field via the
spatially averaged superconducting order parameter which has a square-root
dependence on the magnetic field. Finally, the second Ginzburg-Landau parameter
kappa2(T) has been determined from the experimental data.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Application of Volcano Plots in Analyses of mRNA Differential Expressions with Microarrays
Volcano plot displays unstandardized signal (e.g. log-fold-change) against
noise-adjusted/standardized signal (e.g. t-statistic or -log10(p-value) from
the t test). We review the basic and an interactive use of the volcano plot,
and its crucial role in understanding the regularized t-statistic. The joint
filtering gene selection criterion based on regularized statistics has a curved
discriminant line in the volcano plot, as compared to the two perpendicular
lines for the "double filtering" criterion. This review attempts to provide an
unifying framework for discussions on alternative measures of differential
expression, improved methods for estimating variance, and visual display of a
microarray analysis result. We also discuss the possibility to apply volcano
