Quantifying parameter uncertainties in optical scatterometry using Bayesian inversion
We present a Newton-like method to solve inverse problems and to quantify
parameter uncertainties. We apply the method to parameter reconstruction in
optical scatterometry, where we take into account a priori information and
measurement uncertainties using a Bayesian approach. Further, we discuss the

hp-finite-elements for simulating electromagnetic fields in optical devices with rough textures
The finite-element method is a preferred numerical method when
electromagnetic fields at high accuracy are to be computed in nano-optics
design. Here, we demonstrate a finite-element method using hp-adaptivity on
tetrahedral meshes for computation of electromagnetic fields in a device with
rough textures. The method allows for efficient computations on meshes with
strong variations in element sizes. This enables to use precise geometry
resolution of the rough textures. Convergence to highly accurate results is

Exploring Cross Channel Dissynergies in Multichannel Systems
In this paper, the authors propose that in a multichannel environment, evaluative
conflicts (dissynergies) between service channels exist. Building on status quo bias
theory, they develop a model which relates offline channel satisfaction to perceptions
about a new self-service channel. Data were collected from 639 customers of a
German bank currently using offline investment banking. Results of structural
equation modeling show that offline channel satisfaction reduces the perceived
usefulness and enhances the perceived risk of the online channel. These inhibiting
effects represent a status quo bias. The two perceptions fully mediate between offline
channel satisfaction and intention to use the new self-service channel. Trust in the
bank shows both adoption-enhancing effects and an adoption-inhibiting effect.
Finally, the negative relationship between offline channel satisfaction and perceived
usefulness is significantly stronger for men, for older people, and for less experienced
Internet users. This study has both theoretical and managerial relevance as it
helps to understand consumer behavior in multichannel environments and provides
implications for the design of multichannel service strategies
Non-Amontons behavior of friction in single contacts
We report on the frictional properties of a single contact between a glassy
polymer lens and a flat silica substrate covered either by a disordered or by a
self-assembled alkylsilane monolayer. We find that, in contrast to common
belief, the Amontons proportionality between frictional and normal stresses
does not hold. Besides, we observe that the velocity dependence of the sliding
stress is strongly sensitive to the structure of the silane layer. Analysis of
the frictional rheology observed on both disordered and self-assembled
monolayers suggests that dissipation is controlled by the plasticity of a
glass-like interfacial layer in the former case, and by pinning of polymer
chains on the substrate in the latter one.Comment: submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
New Insights in the Quality-Satisfaction Link : Identifying Asymmetric and Dynamic Effects
This study explores the relationship between service quality and customer satisfaction.
Building on existing literature, the link is proposed to be asymmetric in nature. Drawing on
customer delight theory and opponent-process theory, we also study the dynamics of the
relationship and develop an integrative perspective. Results are obtained by applying dummy variable regression and time-based cohort analysis in two different e-service settings. The findings show that functional-utilitarian quality attributes (efficiency, fulfillment, system availability, and privacy) display habituation effects over time, so that they tend to lose their capability to delight customers. In contrast, hedonistic attributes (website design, enjoyment, and image) seem to be increasingly enjoyed after initial experience with an e-service and develop customer delight capabilities in a later relationship stage. Fine motor difficulties: the need for advocating for the role of occupational therapy in schools
Background: Fine motor difficulties can impact on the academic, social and emotional development of a student. Aim: The aims of this paper are to: (i) investigate the need for support to students experiencing fine motor difficulties from the perspective of their classroom teachers, and (ii) report on the level of knowledge teachers have in regard to the role of occupational therapists in supporting students with fine motor difficulties. Methods: Fifteen teachers from a stratified random sample of public schools within two regions of Victoria, Australia, were interviewed in this qualitative, grounded theory investigation. Results: Results showed that the current level of support for students with fine motor difficulties is inadequate. Conclusion: Occupational therapists in Victoria need to advocate their role in developing the fine motor skills of students at both an organisational and an individual level in order to increase the access of students with fine motor difficulties to occupational therapy services. <br /
Borrelia recurrentis employs a novel multifunctional surface protein with anti-complement, anti-opsonic and invasive potential to escape innate immunity
Borrelia recurrentis, the etiologic agent of louse-borne relapsing fever in humans, has evolved strategies, including antigenic variation, to evade immune defence, thereby causing severe diseases with high mortality rates. Here we identify for the first time a multifunctional surface lipoprotein of B. recurrentis, termed HcpA, and demonstrate that it binds human complement regulators, Factor H, CFHR-1, and simultaneously, the host protease plasminogen. Cell surface bound factor H was found to retain its activity and to confer resistance to complement attack. Moreover, ectopic expression of HcpA in a B. burgdorferi B313 strain, deficient in Factor H binding proteins, protected the transformed spirochetes from complement-mediated killing. Furthermore, HcpA-bound plasminogen/plasmin endows B. recurrentis with the potential to resist opsonization and to degrade extracellular matrix components. Together, the present study underscores the high virulence potential of B. recurrentis. The elucidation of the molecular basis underlying the versatile strategies of B. recurrentis to escape innate immunity and to persist in human tissues, including the brain, may help to understand the pathological processes underlying louse-borne relapsing fever

To respond or not to respond - a personal perspective of intestinal tolerance
For many years, the intestine was one of the poor relations of the immunology world, being a realm inhabited mostly by specialists and those interested in unusual phenomena. However, this has changed dramatically in recent years with the realization of how important the microbiota is in shaping immune function throughout the body, and almost every major immunology institution now includes the intestine as an area of interest. One of the most important aspects of the intestinal immune system is how it discriminates carefully between harmless and harmful antigens, in particular, its ability to generate active tolerance to materials such as commensal bacteria and food proteins. This phenomenon has been recognized for more than 100 years, and it is essential for preventing inflammatory disease in the intestine, but its basis remains enigmatic. Here, I discuss the progress that has been made in understanding oral tolerance during my 40 years in the field and highlight the topics that will be the focus of future research
Borrelia valaisiana resist complement-mediated killing independently of the recruitment of immune regulators and inactivation of complement components
Spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato complex differ in their resistance to complement-mediated killing, particularly in regard to human serum. In the present study, we elucidate the serum and complement susceptibility of B. valaisiana, a genospecies with the potential to cause Lyme disease in Europe as well as in Asia. Among the investigated isolates, growth of ZWU3 Ny3 was not affected while growth of VS116 and Bv9 was strongly inhibited in the presence of 50% human serum. Analyzing complement activation, complement components C3, C4 and C6 were deposited on the surface of isolates VS116 and Bv9, and similarly the membrane attack complex was formed on their surface. In contrast, no surface-deposited components and no aberrations in cell morphology were detected for serum-resistant ZWU3 Ny3. While further investigating the protective role of bound complement regulators in mediating complement resistance, we discovered that none of the B. valaisiana isolates analyzed bound complement regulators Factor H, Factor H-like protein 1, C4b binding protein or C1 esterase inhibitor. In addition, B. valaisiana also lacked intrinsic proteolytic activity to degrade complement components C3, C3b, C4, C4b, and C5. Taken together, these findings suggest that certain B. valaisiana isolates differ in their capability to resist complement-mediating killing by human serum. The molecular mechanism utilized by B. valaisiana to inhibit bacteriolysis appears not to involve binding of the key host complement regulators of the alternative, classical, and lectin pathways as already known for serum-resistant Lyme disease or relapsing fever borreliae
