Break up of returning plasma after the 7 June 2011 filament eruption by Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities
A prominence eruption on 7 June 2011 produced spectacular curtains of plasma
falling through the lower corona. At the solar surface they created an
incredible display of extreme ultraviolet brightenings. The aim is to identify
and analyze some of the local instabilities which produce structure in the
falling plasma. The structures were investigated using SDO/AIA 171A and 193A
images in which the falling plasma appeared dark against the bright coronal
emission. Several instances of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability were
investigated. In two cases the Alfven velocity associated with the dense plasma
could be estimated from the separation of the Rayleigh-Taylor fingers. A second
type of feature, which has the appearance of self-similar branching horns, is

Genetic Diversity in Swallenia alexandrae (Poaceae, Chloridoideae), a Narrow Endemic From the Eureka Dunes (Inyo County, California)
Swallenia alexandrae, Eureka Valley dune grass (Poaceae, Chloridoideae), is a narrow endemic known only from three localities in the Eureka Valley and adjoining Saline Range in the northern portion of Death Valley National Park (Inyo County, California). This monotypic genus is listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as rare by the California Department of Fish and Game. Genetic diversity within and among populations of S. alexandrae was studied with randomly amplified polymorphic DNA. A single polymorphic band was detected in approximately one quarter of all individuals sampled. This result indicates very low genetic diversity in S. alexandrae. There is no evidence of private alleles and very little partitioning of genetic diversity between populations. These results are discussed in relation to conservation concerns for S. alexandrae
A Multi-Epoch HST Study of the Herbig-Haro Flow from XZ Tauri
We present nine epochs of Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging of the
bipolar outflow from the pre-main sequence binary XZ Tauri. Our data monitors
the system from 1995-2005 and includes emission line images of the flow. The
northern lobe appears to be a succession of bubbles, the outermost of which
expanded ballistically from 1995-1999 but in 2000 began to deform and
decelerate along its forward edge. It reached an extent of 6" from the binary
in 2005. A larger and fainter southern counterbubble was detected for the first
time in deep ACS images from 2004. Traces of shocked emission are seen as far
as 20" south of the binary. The bubble emission nebulosity has a low excitation
overall, as traced by the [S II]/H-alpha line ratio, requiring a nearly
comoving surrounding medium that has been accelerated by previous ejections or
stellar winds.
Within the broad bubbles there are compact emission knots whose alignments
and proper motions indicate that collimated jets are ejected from each binary
component. The jet from the southern component, XZ Tau A, is aligned with the
outflow axis of the bubbles and has tangential knot velocities of 70-200 km/s.
Knots in the northern flow are seen to slow and brighten as they approach the
forward edge of the outermost bubble. The knots in the jet from the other star,
XZ Tau B, have lower velocities of ~100 km/s
The Prehistoric Sites at Choke Canyon Reservoir, Southern Texas: Results of Phase II Archaeological Investigations
Reported in this volume are the results of archaeological investigations at 72 prehistoric sites located in the basin of Choke Canyon Reservoir on the Frio River in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, southern Texas. The sites investigated in this study will be affected in one way or another by a lake formed after construction of Choke Canyon Dam, a project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation CUSBR). The research was sponsored by the USBR as the second and final phase of a two-stage program of archaeological investigations designed to mitigate damage or destruction of cultural resources resulting from dam construction and subsequent long-term inundation of a large area of the Frio River valley. Methods used to study Choke Canyon\u27s prehistoric sites during the Phase II investigation were various types of subsurface excavations, documentation of surface features and characteristics, and collection of artifacts from site surfaces. The people who inhabited the Choke Canyon region in prehistoric times, representing an approximate span of 10,000 years, existed as mobile hunter/gatherer bands. They subsisted by tapping virtually every conceivable source of edible natural food. A full spectrum of animals, from lowly field mice and lizards up to bison and deer, was exploited by various techniques of hunting, trapping, and catching. Large land snails and mussels were sources of meat food that Choke Canyon\u27s prehistoric people could easily gather. Gar, drum, and turtles were taken from local creeks, sloughs, and the river, perhaps using spears, nets, or weirs. Analysis of vertebrate faunal remains, results of which are presented herein, rather conclusively demonstrates that Late Prehistoric people exploited big game species more commonly than did their Archaic period predecessors. Floral products must also have comprised a substantial portion of the foods consumed by Choke Canyon\u27s prehistoric inhabitants. Direct evidence of plant food utilization is nonexistent on the sites. However, the very common occurrence of sandstone manes and metates implies heavy reliance on seeds, nuts, or beans. Also, the tremendous amount of burned rock that accumulated in Archaic components at many sites, often found as very carefully constructed hearth features, suggests that baking or roasting activities were extremely common. Roots, tubers, stalks, and other edible plant parts may have been what was being prepared in these facilities. Diagnostic artifacts recovered from prehistoric sites at Choke Canyon during the various phases of archaeological investigation clearly indicate that the general vicinity witnessed aboriginal activity from Paleo-Indian times up through the early Historic period. Evidence of Paleo-Indian people is limited to surface finds along the valley margin and on high, ancient terrace formations down in the river valley. No in situ subsurface Paleo-Indian components have yet been isolated at Choke Canyon. Where previously the earliest subsurface component known at Choke Canyon dated to the Middle Archaic period (ca. 3400 B.C. to 2400 B.C.), the Phase II excavations led to discovery of an Early Archaic component dating to the period from 5000 B.C. xi to 4000 B.C. While recognizable Paleo-Indian, Early Archaic, and Middle Archaic components are relatively scarce, the Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods are amply represented in the prehistoric sites at Choke Canyon. Phase II investigations also produced the first clear indication of an aboriginal component containing evidence of contact with Anglo-Europeans in early historic times. The bulk of cultural, paleobotanical, and vertebrate faunal data representing the prehistory of Choke Canyon indicates that floral and faunal communities and the general climatic regime remained essentially unchanged from at least 4000 B.C. up to the period in historic times when certain livestock and land management practices led to a drastic expansion of brush communities and severe erosion of formerly stable land surfaces
Private Standards, Handling and Hygiene in Fruit Export Supply Chains: A Preliminary Evaluation of the Economic Impact of Parallel Standards
With the emergence of private food safety and quality standards in developed countries fruit exporting countries in the developing world face increasing constraints to access markets in the rich industrialised countries in the North. Producers in the South have no alternative as to make the necessary investments on farms and in pack houses to comply with the requirements of these food quality and safety standards. The export of fresh fruit is an important component of South African agricultural exports, with citrus fruit exported to markets such as Europe being of particular importance. This paper reports selected results from a large research project into the impact of private standard compliance on the quality of the fruit and the returns to farmers. The research process involved a multi-disciplinary analysis of Agricultural Economics and Microbiology / Plant pathology as we analysed the dynamics of the citrus export supply chain from the farms in South Africa to the end consumer in Europe. Sampled fruit containers were followed through the whole supply chain which allowed us to provide an exposé of the behaviour of the different actors in the citrus supply chain and obtain some evidence of poor handling and hygiene standards by means of a comparison of the experimental observations with various relevant components of the EurepGAP control points and compliance criteria for fruit and vegetables. Observations suggest that these standards are adequately applied to the production and handling of fruit at the farm and pack house levels while on the other hand the subsequent stages (mainly after the importing harbour in Europe) of the fruit supply chain are seemingly not subjected to the same strict requirements laid out for producers, leading to fruit quality deterioration and financial losses for producers. This constitutes clear parallel standards in terms of fruit safety and quality standards between upstream and downstream sections of the supply chain and questions thus the purpose of the standards and the financial return for producers making large investments to comply with these privately introduced standards.International Relations/Trade,
Chandra Confirmation of a Pulsar Wind Nebula in DA 495
As part of a multiwavelength study of the unusual radio supernova remnant DA
495, we present observations made with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Imaging
and spectroscopic analysis confirms the previously detected X-ray source at the
heart of the annular radio nebula, establishing the radiative properties of two
key emission components: a soft unresolved source with a blackbody temperature
of 1 MK consistent with a neutron star, surrounded by a nonthermal nebula 40''
in diameter exhibiting a power-law spectrum with photon index Gamma =
1.6+/-0.3, typical of a pulsar wind nebula. The implied spin-down luminosity of
the neutron star, assuming a conversion efficiency to nebular flux appropriate
to Vela-like pulsars, is ~10^{35} ergs/s, again typical of objects a few tens
of kyr old. Morphologically, the nebular flux is slightly enhanced along a
direction, in projection on the sky, independently demonstrated to be of
significance in radio polarization observations; we argue that this represents
the orientation of the pulsar spin axis. At smaller scales, a narrow X-ray
feature is seen extending out 5'' from the point source, a distance consistent
with the sizes of resolved wind termination shocks around many Vela-like
pulsars. Finally, we argue based on synchrotron lifetimes in the estimated
nebular magnetic field that DA 495 represents a rare pulsar wind nebula in
which electromagnetic flux makes up a significant part, together with particle
flux, of the neutron star's wind, and that this high magnetization factor may

Anthocyanins inhibit tumor necrosis alpha-induced loss of Caco-2 cell barrier integrity
An increased permeability of the intestinal barrier is proposed as a major event in the pathophysiology of conditions characterized by chronic gut inflammation. This study investigated the capacity of pure anthocyanins (AC), and berry and rice extracts containing different types and amounts of AC, to inhibit tumor necrosis alpha (TNFα)-induced permeabilization of Caco-2 cell monolayers. Caco-2 cells differentiated into intestinal epithelial cell monolayers were incubated in the absence/presence of TNFα, with or without the addition of AC or AC-rich plant extracts (ACRE). AC and ACRE inhibited TNFα-induced loss of monolayer permeability as assessed by changes in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and paracellular transport of FITC-dextran. In the range of concentrations tested (0.25–1 μM), O-glucosides of cyanidin, and delphinidin, but not those of malvidin, peonidin and petunidin protected the monolayer from TNFα-induced decrease of TEER and increase of FITC-dextran permeability. Cyanidin and delphinidin acted by mitigating TNFα-triggered activation of transcription factor NF-κB, and downstream phosphorylation of myosin light chain (MLC). The protective actions of the ACRE on TNFα-induced TEER increase was positively correlated with the sum of cyanidins and delphinidins (r2 = 0.83) content in the ACRE. However, no correlation was observed between TEER and ACRE total AC, malvidin, or peonidin content. Results support a particular capacity of cyanidins and delphinidins in the protection of the intestinal barrier against inflammation-induced permeabilization, in part through the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway.Fil: Cremonini, Eleonora. Kalinia, a New North American Genus for a Species Long Misplaced in Eragrostis (Poaceae, Chloridoideae)
Eragrostis obtusiflora (Poaceae, Chloridoideae), a species distributed from the southwestern United States to central Mexico, has long been recognized for exhibiting morphological and anatomical features atypical of Eragrostis. Phylogenetic analyses of nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences and plastid sequences demonstrate that E. obtusiflora should be excluded from Eragrostis (Eragrostideae) and instead be placed in Cynodonteae, although its position within this tribe was unresolved. Additional data, including anatomical and micromorphological characters, suggest a close relationship with Distichlis. However, differences in spikelet and rhizome characters prevent its inclusion in Distichlis. Therefore, the species is transferred to a newly described genus, Kalinia, as K. obtusiflora
Molecular excitation in the Eagle nebula's fingers
Context: The M16 nebula is a relatively nearby Hii region, powered by O stars
from the open cluster NGC 6611, which borders to a Giant Molecular Cloud.
Radiation from these hot stars has sculpted columns of dense obscuring material
on a few arcmin scales. The interface between these pillars and the hot ionised
medium provides a textbook example of a Photodissociation Region (PDR).
Aims: To constrain the physical conditions of the atomic and molecular
material with submillimeter spectroscopic observations.
Methods: We used the APEX submillimeter telescope to map a ~3'x3' region in
the CO J=3-2, 4-3 and 7-6 rotational lines, and a subregion in atomic carbon
lines. We also observed C18O(3-2) and CO(7-6) with longer integrations on five
peaks found in the CO(3-2) map. The large scale structure of the pillars is
derived from the molecular lines' emission distribution. We estimate the
magnitude of the velocity gradient at the tips of the pillars and use LVG
modelling to constrain their densities and temperatures. Excitation
temperatures and carbon column densities are derived from the atomic carbon
lines.
Results: The atomic carbon lines are optically thin and excitation
temperatures are of order 60 K to 100 K, well consistent with observations of
other Hii region-molecular cloud interfaces. We derive somewhat lower
temperatures from the CO line ratios, of order 40 K. The Ci/CO ratio is around
