Chemical Abundances of Planetary Nebulae in M33
Using spectroscopic data presented in Magrini et al. (2003), we have analyzed
with the photoionization code CLOUDY 94.00 (Ferland et al. 1998) 11 Planetary
Nebulae belonging to the spiral galaxy M 33. Central star temperatures and
nebular parameters have been determined. In particular the chemical abundances
of He/H, O/H, N/H, Ar/H, and S/H have been measured and compared with values
obtained via the Ionization Correction Factors (ICFs) method, when available.
Chemical abundance relationships have been investigated; in particular, a
correlation between N/H and N/O similar to the Galactic one (Henry 1989), and a
feeble anti-correlation between O/H and N/O have been found.
A gradient in O/H across the disc of M~33 is indicatively consistent with the
one found from HII regions in this galaxy (Vilchez et al 1988). Further studies
in the more external parts of M~33 are however needed to ascertain this point.
The present result shows that oxygen and helium abundances (with lower accuracy
also nitrogen, argon and sulphur) can be actually estimated from the brightest
PNe of a galaxy, even if the electron temperature cannot be measured. We also
found that the oxygen abundance is quite independent of the absolute magnitude
of the PN and consequently the brightest PNe are representative of the whole PN
population. This represents an important tool to measure the metallicity of
galaxies at the time of the formation of PNe progenitors.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, A&A accepte
Magnetic shielding and vacuum test for passive hydrogen masers
Vibration tests on high permeability magnetic shields used in the SAO-NRL Advanced Development Model (ADM) hydrogen maser were made. Magnetic shielding factors were measured before and after vibration. Preliminary results indicate considerable (25%) degradation. Test results on the NRL designed vacuum pumping station for the ADM hydrogen maser are also discussed. This system employs sintered zirconium carbon getter pumps to pump hydrogen plus small ion pumps to pump the inert gases. In situ activation tests and pumping characteristics indicate that the system can meet design specifications
Impact of a general practice based group parenting programme on the mental health of children and parents 12 months post intervention : quantitative and qualitative results from a controlled trial
Objective To test the effectiveness at one year of the Webster Stratton Parents and Children Series group parenting programme in a population sample of parents
Design multicentre block randomised controlled trial
Setting 3 urban General Practices in Oxford.
Participants Parents of children aged 2-8 years in 116 families who scored in the upper 50% on a behaviour inventory.
Intervention Webster-Stratton’s 10-week parenting programme led by health visitors.
Outcome measures. Eyberg Child Behaviour Inventory, Goodman Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, General Health Questionnaire, Parenting Stress Index, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. Qualitative interviews with volunteer parents from both intervention and control groups immediately post intervention.
Results The intervention significantly reduced child behaviour problems and improved mental health at immediate and 6-month follow-ups. One-year differences between control and intervention groups were not significant. Possible methodological reasons for this are: Hawthorne effects and contamination of control group. At interview parents spoke of a need for further sessions and a desire for attendance by both parents. They also described how, as a result of the programme, they had gained in confidence,
felt less stressed, shouted less and achieved more cooperation from their children.
Conclusions Parenting programmes have the potential to promote mental health and reduce social inequalities, but further work is needed to improve long-term effectiveness
The Local Group Census: planetary nebulae in Sextans B
Five planetary nebulae (PNe) have been discovered in the nearby dwarf
irregular galaxy. Emission line images were obtained using the Wide Field
Camera of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma (Spain). The
candidate PNe were identified by their point-like appearance and relatively
strong [OIII] emission-line fluxes. They are located within a galactocentric
distance of 2.8 arcmin, corresponding to 1.1 kpc at the distance of Sextans B.
Luminosities are in the range 1800--5600Lsolar. Sextans B is one of the
smallest dwarf irregular galaxies with a PN population. The number of PNe
detected suggest an enhanced star formation rate between 1 and 5 Gyr ago.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
A catalog of planetary nebula candidates in the Sculptor spiral galaxy NGC 300
[OIII]5007 on-band off-band images, obtained with the VLT and FORS2
spectrograph in two zones (center and outskirts) of the spiral galaxy NGC300,
are analyzed searching for emission line objects. In particular we search for
planetary nebula (PN) candidates to analyze their distribution and luminosity
properties, to perform follow-up spectroscopy, and to study the planetary
nebula luminosity function, PNLF. In the continuum-subtracted images, a large
number of emission line objects were detected. From this sample we selected as
PN candidates those objects with stellar appearance and no detectable central
star. [OIII]5007 instrumental magnitudes were measured and calibrated by using
spectrophotometric data from the follow-up spectroscopy. We identified more
than a hundred PN candidates and a number of compact HII regions. The PN sample
is the largest one reported for this galaxy so far. For all the objects we
present coordinates, instrumental [OIII]5007 magnitudes and apparent nebular
[OIII]5007 fluxes and magnitudes. The [OIII]5007 observed luminosity function
for PNe (PNLF) was calculated for the whole sample and for the central and
outskirts samples. The three PNLF are similar within uncertainties. We fit the
empirical PNLF to the observed PNLF for all the samples. From our best fit for
the whole sample we derived a maximum value for the apparent magnitudes of
m*(5007)=22.019\pm0.022 and we obtained a tentative estimate of the distance
modulus m(5007)-M(5007)= 26.29 {+0.12} {-0.22} mag, which agrees well with the

Histopathological analysis and in situ localisation of Australian tiger snake venom in two clinically envenomed domestic animals
Objective: To assess histopathological changes in clinically envenomed tiger snake patients and identify tissue specific localisation of venom toxins using immunohistochemistry. Samples: One feline and one canine patient admitted to the Murdoch Pet Emergency Centre (MPEC), Murdoch University with tiger snake (Notechis sp.) envenoming. Both patients died as a result of envenomation. Non-envenomed tissue was also collected and used for comparison. Methodology: Biopsy samples (heart, lung, kidney andskeletal muscle tissue) were retrieved 1-2 h post death and processed for histopathological examination using Haemotoxylin and Eosin, Martius Scarlet Blue and Periodic Acid Schiff staining. Tissues were examined by light microscopy and tissue sections subjected to immunohistochemical staining using in-house generated monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies against Notechis venoms. Results: Venom-induced pathological changes were observed in the lungs, kidneys and muscle tissue of both patients. Evidence, not previously noted, of procoagulant venom effects were apparent, with formed thrombi in the heart, lungs (small fibrillar aggregates and larger, discrete thrombi) and kidneys. Immunohistochemical assays revealed venom present in the pulmonary tissue, in and around the glomerular capsule and surrounding tubules in renal tissue and scattered throughout the Gastrocnemius muscle tissue. Conclusion: This work has shown pathological evidence of procoagulant venom activity supporting previous suggestions that an initial thrombotic state occurs in envenomed patients. We have shown that venom toxins are able to be localised to specific tissues, in this case, venom was detected in the lung, kidney and muscle tissues of clinically envenomed animals. Future work will examine specific toxin localisation using monoclonal antibodies and identify if antivenom molecules are able to reach their target tissues

Use of medical, surgical and complementary treatments among women with fibroids
OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of medical management, uterus-preserving surgery (UPS), and complementary treatments among women with uterine fibroids.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study of 933 premenopausal women ages 31-54 years with symptomatic fibroids who participated in the Study of Pelvic Problems, Hysterectomy, and Intervention Alternatives (SOPHIA) for an average of 4.3 years (SD 2.5 years). Incident use of fibroid treatments was determined through annual interviews. Linear regression models were used to compare changes in fibroid-related symptoms among women who underwent UPS versus those who did not undergo surgery.
RESULTS: Participants were racially and ethnically diverse, with a mean age of 43 years. During study follow-up, 531 participants (57%) did not undergo UPS or hysterectomy, 250 (27%) had at least one UPS, and 152 (16%) underwent hysterectomy. Complementary and alternative treatments were commonly used, including exercise (45%), diet (34%), herbs (37%), and acupuncture (16%): participants reported significant symptom improvement and few side effects with these interventions. In multivariable linear regression models, women who did not undergo surgery during the study reported improvement in dyspareunia (p<.001), pelvic pain (p<.001), and menstrual cramps (p<.001). However, women who underwent UPS reported greater overall resolution of "pelvic problems" compared with women who did not have surgical treatment (difference in change score 1.18 on a four-point Likert scale, p<.001).
CONCLUSION: UPS are effective treatments for women with fibroids, but many women use hormonal or complementary treatments and report significant symptom improvement without surgical intervention
