Symposium on Intracellular pH, PCO₂ and PO₂: Introductory Remarks
It is a pleasure to welcome the three authorities who will carry the major load of presentations in our symposium today. They are Dr. Frans Jöbsis of Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Eugene Robin of The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Dr. Norman Carter of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. We are also grateful for the presence of Dr. Lutz Kiesow of the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Kiesow will assist in the discussions to be held after each major presentation. Each of these men is an international authority in his field, and we are more than fortunate to have this group with us today

It is not written for the beginner, for it does not contain all the background material necessary to effectuate a full understanding of the area. But it is extremely objective, and it exhaustively treats the relevant appellate court decisions. For the informed reader, therefore, it is both thought-provoking and an invaluable research tool
A passive infrared ice detection technique for helicopter applications
A technique has been developed, and successfully tested, to detect icing remotely on helicopter rotor blades. Using passive infrared (IR) thermometry it is possible to detect the warming caused by latent heat released as supercooled water freezes. During icing, the ice accretion region on the leading edge of the blade is found to be warmer than the uniced trailing edge resulting in a chordwise temperature profile characteristic of icing. Preliminary tests, using an IR Thermal video system, were conducted on a static model in the NASA Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) for a variety of wet (glaze) and dry (rime) ice conditions. A prototype detector system was built consisting of a single point IR pyrometer, and experiments were run on a small scale rotor model. Using this prototype detector, the characteristic chordwise temperature profiles were again observed for a range of icing conditions. Several signal processing methods were investigated, to allow automatic recognition of the icing signature. Additionally, several implementation issues were considered. Based on both the static and subscale rotor tests, where ice was successfully detected, the passive IR technique appears to be promising for rotor ice detection
Vacuum chamber translation/positioning mechanism and welding power supply controller
Welding in the vacuum of space represents an important and fundamental problem for space exploration. Repairs or connection of metal components on orbit or during travel to the moon or distant planets may be required. Cracks or holes in spacecraft skin or supporting structures external to the pressurized section will require some type of repair that must be permanently made to the skin or support by welding. The development of a translation/positioning system that will permit research into welding of metal samples in a small vacuum chamber located at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is addressed. The system and associated software was tested to the extent possible without the availability of the welder power supply or control computer that must be supplied by MSFC. Software has been developed for straight line welding. More extensive and varied translations are possible with simple alterations to the operating software to use the full capabilities of this three axes system. The source code 'VW.BAS' has been provided to serve as an example for further development of the vacuum welder translation system
Aero/fluids database system
The AFAS Database System was developed to provide the basic structure of a comprehensive database system for the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Structures and Dynamics Laboratory Aerophysics Division. The system is intended to handle all of the Aerophysics Division Test Facilities as well as data from other sources. The system was written for the DEC VAX family of computers in FORTRAN-77 and utilizes the VMS indexed file system and screen management routines. Various aspects of the system are covered, including a description of the user interface, lists of all code structure elements, descriptions of the file structures, a description of the security system operation, a detailed description of the data retrieval tasks, a description of the session log, and a description of the archival system
