Scaling of the 1-halo terms with bias
In the Halo Model, galaxies are hosted by dark matter halos, while the halos
themselves are biased tracers of the underlying matter distribution.
Measurements of galaxy correlation functions include contributions both from
galaxies in different halos, and from galaxies in the same halo (the so-called
1-halo terms). We show that, for highly biased tracers, the 1-halo term of the
power spectrum obeys a steep scaling relation in terms of bias. We also show
that the 1-halo term of the trispectrum has a steep scaling with bias. The
steepness of these scaling relations is such that the 1-halo terms can become
key contributions to the -point correlation functions, even at large scales.
We interpret these results through analytical arguments and semi-analytical
calculations in terms of the statistical properties of halos.Comment: Matches version published on MNRAS. 12 pages, 8 figure
The objective of this study was to examine the alkalithermophilic actinomycete communities in the subtropical environment of Jujuy, Argentina, characterized by sugarcane crops. Laceyella putida, Laceyella sacchari, Thermoactinomyces intermedius, Thermoactinomyces vulgaris and Thermoflavimicrobium dichotomicum were isolated on the media with novobiocin, from sugar cane plants and renewal rhizospheres, and grass and wood soils. Soil pH was almost neutral or lightly alkaline, except for grass soil acidified by lactic liquor. A smaller number of actinomycetes was found on the living plants and bagasse (recently obtained or stored according to the Ritter method) with respect to decomposed leaves on the soil. Thermophilic species of Laceyella, Thermoactinomyces, Thermoflavimicrobium, Saccharomonospora, Streptomyces and Thermononospora were isolated on the media without novobiocin, from composted sugar cane residues. Air captured near composted bagasse piles, contained alkalithermophilic actinomycete spores.Fil: Carrillo, L.. Universidad Nacional de Jujuy. Donors in Ge as Qubits: Establishing Physical Attributes
Quantum electronic devices at the single impurity level demand an
understanding of the physical attributes of dopants at an unprecedented
accuracy. Germanium-based technologies have been developed recently, creating a
necessity to adapt the latest theoretical tools to the unique electronic
structure of this material. We investigate basic properties of donors in Ge
which are not known experimentally, but are indispensable for qubit
implementations. Our approach provides a description of the wavefunction at
multiscale, associating microscopic information from Density Functional Theory
and envelope functions from state of the art multivalley effective mass
calculations, including a central cell correction designed to reproduce the
energetics of all group V donor species (P, As, Sb and Bi). With this
formalism, we predict the binding energies of negatively ionized donors (D-
state). Furthermore, we investigate the signatures of buried donors to be
expected from Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). The naive assumption that
attributes of donor electrons in other semiconductors may be extrapolated to Ge
is shown to fail, similar to earlier attempts to recreate in Si qubits designed
for GaAs. Our results suggest that the mature techniques available for qubit
realizations may be adapted to germanium to some extent, but the peculiarities
of the Ge band structure will demand new ideas for fabrication and control
On the Stability of Black Holes at the LHC
The eventual production of mini black holes by proton-proton collisions at
the LHC is predicted by theories with large extra dimensions resolvable at the
Tev scale of energies. It is expected that these black holes evaporate shortly
after its production as a consequence of the Hawking radiation. We show that
for theories based on the ADS/CFT correspondence, the produced black holes may
have an unstable horizon, which grows proportionally to the square of the
distance to the collision point.Comment: 3 page
On the recovery of ISW fluctuations using large-scale structure tracers and CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies
In this work we present a method to extract the signal induced by the
integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in the cosmic microwave background (CMB).
It makes use of the Linear Covariance-Based filter introduced by Barreiro et
al., and combines CMB data with any number of large-scale structure (LSS)
surveys and lensing information. It also exploits CMB polarization to reduce
cosmic variance. The performance of the method has been thoroughly tested with
simulations taking into account the impact of non-ideal conditions such as
incomplete sky coverage or the presence of noise. In particular, three galaxy
surveys are simulated, whose redshift distributions peak at low (), intermediate () and high redshift (). The
contribution of each of the considered data sets as well as the effect of a
mask and noise in the reconstructed ISW map is studied in detail. When
combining all the considered data sets (CMB temperature and polarization, the
three galaxy surveys and the lensing map), the proposed filter successfully
reconstructs a map of the weak ISW signal, finding a perfect correlation with
the input signal for the ideal case and around 80 per cent, on average, in the
presence of noise and incomplete sky coverage. We find that including CMB
polarization improves the correlation between input and reconstruction although
only at a small level. Nonetheless, given the weakness of the ISW signal, even
modest improvements can be of importance. In particular, in realistic
situations, in which less information is available from the LSS tracers, the
effect of including polarisation is larger. For instance, for the case in which
the ISW signal is recovered from CMB plus only one survey, and taking into
account the presence of noise and incomplete sky coverage, the improvement in
the correlation coefficient can be as large as 10 per cent.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
