Inefficient Worker Turnover
This paper considers the efficiency properties of risk-neutral workers’ mobility decisions in an equilibrium model with search frictions, but no search externalities, when the rent accruing to a match is split through bargaining. Matches are ex ante homogeneous and their true productivity is learnt after the match is formed. It is shown that the efficiency of worker turnover depends on contract enforceability, and that in the absence of complete enforceability the equilibrium fails to be efficient. This is because without complete enforceability firms cannot credibly offer workers contracts that will guarantee them the entire future of all potential future matches.On-the-Job Search; Learning; Bargaining; Contracts; Enforceability
Spin-Cooling of the Motion of a Trapped Diamond
Observing and controlling macroscopic quantum systems has long been a driving
force in research on quantum physics. In this endeavor, strong coupling between
individual quantum systems and mechanical oscillators is being actively
pursued. While both read-out of mechanical motion using coherent control of
spin systems and single spin read-out using pristine oscillators have been
demonstrated, temperature control of the motion of a macroscopic object using
long-lived electronic spins has not been reported. Here, we observe both a
spin-dependent torque and spin-cooling of the motion of a trapped microdiamond.
Using a combination of microwave and laser excitation enables the spin of
nitrogen-vacancy centers to act on the diamond orientation and to cool the
diamond libration via a dynamical back-action. Further, driving the system in
the non-linear regime, we demonstrate bistability and self-sustained coherent
oscillations stimulated by the spin-mechanical coupling, which offers prospects
for spin-driven generation of non-classical states of motion. Such a levitating
diamond operated as a compass with controlled dissipation has implications in
high-precision torque sensing, emulation of the spin-boson problem and probing
of quantum phase transitions. In the single spin limit and employing ultra-pure
nano-diamonds, it will allow quantum non-demolition read-out of the spin of
nitrogen-vacancy centers under ambient conditions, deterministic entanglement
between distant individual spins and matter-wave interferometry.Comment: New version with a calibration of angular resolution and sensitivity.

Fast and High-Fidelity Entangling Gate through Parametrically Modulated Longitudinal Coupling
We investigate an approach to universal quantum computation based on the
modulation of longitudinal qubit-oscillator coupling. We show how to realize a
controlled-phase gate by simultaneously modulating the longitudinal coupling of
two qubits to a common oscillator mode. In contrast to the more familiar
transversal qubit-oscillator coupling, the magnitude of the effective
qubit-qubit interaction does not rely on a small perturbative parameter. As a
result, this effective interaction strength can be made large, leading to short
gate times and high gate fidelities. We moreover show how the gate infidelity
can be exponentially suppressed with squeezing and how the entangling gate can
be generalized to qubits coupled to separate oscillators. Our proposal can be
realized in multiple physical platforms for quantum computing, including
superconducting and spin qubits.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Materia
Arrow's theorem for weak orders

Generation of coherent magnetic fields in sheared inhomogeneous turbulence: No need for rotation?
Coherent magnetic fields are often believed to be generated by the combination of stretching by differential rotation and turbulent amplification of magnetic field, via the so-called alpha effect. The latter is known to exist in helical turbulence, which is envisioned to arise due to both rotation and convection in solar-type stars. In this contribution, a turbulent flow driven by a nonhelical inhomogeneous forcing and its kinematic dynamo action are studied for a uniform magnetic field in the background of a linear shear flow. By using a quasilinear analysis and a nonperturbative method utilizing a time-dependent wave number, turbulence property and electromotive force are computed for arbitrary shear strength. Due to the large-scale shear flow, the turbulence is highly anisotropic, as a consequence, so is the electromotive force. The latter is found to exist even without rotation due to the combined effect of shear flow and inhomogeneous forcing, containing not only the alpha effect but also magnetic pumping (the gamma effect representing a transport of magnetic flux by turbulence). Specifically, without shear, only the magnetic pumping exists, aligned with the direction of inhomogeneity. For a weak but nonzero shear, the combined effects of shear and inhomogeneous forcing modify the structure of the magnetic pumping when the inhomogeneity is in the plane of the shear flow, the magnetic pumping becoming bidimensional in that plane. It also induces an alpha tensor which has nondiagonal components. When the inhomogeneity is perpendicular to the plane of the shear flow, the alpha effect has three nonzero diagonal components and one off-diagonal component. However, for a sufficiently strong shear, the gamma and alpha effects are suppressed due to shear stabilization which damps turbulence. A simplified dynamo model is then proposed where a large-scale dynamo arises due to the combined effect of shear flow and inhomogeneous forcing. In particular, the growth of a large-scale axisymmetric magnetic field is demonstrated in case of an inhomogeneity which is perpendicular to the plane of the shear flow. Interesting implications of these results for the structure of magnetic fields in star with slow rotation are discussed. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3551700
Impact of Diet and Quality Grade on Shelf Life of Beef Steaks
Steers were fed a diet containing dry rolled corn, steam flaked corn, dry rolled corn with 30% dried distillers grains, or steam flaked corn with 30% dried distillers grains. Strip loins from upper 2/3 Choice and Select- grade carcasses were obtained to evaluate the effects of diet and quality grade on shelf life characteristics. Strip loins were aged for 2, 9, 16, or 23 days. Results suggest that steaks from cattle fed steam flaked corn (with or without dried distillers grains) and from cattle fed dried distillers grains (regardless of corn type) had higher levels of many unsaturated fatty acids, more discoloration, and greater lipid oxidation compared to the dry rolled corn treatments or the no dried distillers grains treatments, respectively. Feeding of dry rolled corn or diets without dried distillers grains maintained red color better during retail display. Choice- grade steaks had significantly higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids like 18:2 and total polyunsaturated fatty acids than Select- grade steaks but did not diff er in color stability or oxidation. These data indicate the longest shelf life will occur when cattle are fed diets containing dry rolled corn (versus steam flaked corn) or without dried distillers grains (versus with dried distillers grains) and that both steam flaked corn and distillers grains have a negative impact on shelf life. Quality grade did not affect color stability
Radar High Resolution Range & Micro-Doppler Analysis of Human Motions
In radar imaging it is well known that relative motion or deformation of parts of illuminated objects induce additional features in the Doppler frequency spectra. These features are called micro-Doppler effect and appear as sidebands around the central Doppler frequency. They can provide valuable information about the structure of the moving parts and may be used for identification purposes [1]. Previous papers have mostly focused on ID micro-Doppler analysis [2-4]. In this paper, we propose to emphasize the analysis of such "non stationary targets" using a 2D imaging space, using both the micro-Doppler and a high range resolution analysis. As in 2D-ISAR imaging, range separation enables us to better discriminate the various effects caused by the time varying reflectors. We will focus our study on human motion. We will see how micro-Doppler signature can be used to extract information on pedestrians gait. We will show examples on simulated and experimental data
