Determinants and outcomes of motivation in health professions education: a systematic review based on self-determination theory
Purpose: This study aimed at conducting a systematic review in health professions education of determinants, mediators and outcomes of students’ motivation to engage in academic activities based on the self-determination theory’s perspective. Methods: A search was conducted across databases (MEDLINE, CINHAL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and ERIC databases), hand-search of relevant journals, grey literature, and published research profile of key authors. Quantitative and qualitative studies were included if they reported research in health professions education focused on determinants, mediators, and/or outcomes of motivation from the self-determination and if meeting the quality criteria. Results: A total of 17 studies met the inclusion and quality criteria. Articles retrieved came from diverse locations and mainly from medical education and to a lesser extent from psychology and dental education. Intrapersonal (gender and personality traits) and interpersonal determinants (academic conditions and lifestyle, qualitative method of selection, feedback, and an autonomy supportive learning climate) have been reported to have a positive influence on students’ motivation to engage in academic activities. No studies were found that tested mediation effects between determinants and students’ motivation. In turn, students’ self-determined motivation has been found to be positively associated with different cognitive, affective, and behavioural outcomes. Conclusion: This study has found that generally, motivation could be enhanced by changes in the educational environment and by an early detection of students’ characteristics. Doing so may support future health practitioners’ self-determined motivation and positively influence how they process information and their emotions and how they approach their learning activities
Colloidal Assemblies of Oriented Maghemite Nanocrystals and their NMR Relaxometric Properties
Elevated-temperature polyol-based colloidal-chemistry approach allows for the
development of size-tunable (50 and 86 nm) assemblies of maghemite iso-oriented
nanocrystals, with enhanced magnetization. 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
relaxometric experiments show that the ferrimagnetic cluster-like colloidal
entities exhibit a remarkable enhancement (4 to 5 times) in the transverse
relaxivity, if compared to that of the superparamagnetic contrast agent
Endorem, over an extended frequency range (1-60 MHz). The marked increase of
the transverse relaxivity r2 at a clinical magnetic field strength (1.41 T),
which is 405.1 and 508.3 mM-1 s-1 for small and large assemblies respectively,
allows to relate the observed response to the raised intra-aggregate magnetic
material volume fraction. Furthermore, cell tests with murine fibroblast
culture medium confirmed the cell viability in presence of the clusters. We
discuss the NMR dispersion profiles on the basis of relaxivity models to
highlight the magneto-structural characteristics of the materials for improved

Efeito do cultivo de espécies vegetais sobre a população de Pratylenchus brachyurus na soja.
O presente trabalho, conduzido em casa de vegetação da Embrapa Soja, em Londrina, PR, no período de novembro/2011 a março/2012, teve como objetivos principais conhecer a reação de 23 espécies vegetais a Pratylenchus brachyurus e avaliar a influência da incorporação de suas fitomassas (parte aérea e raízes) no solo sobre as população do nematoide e performance da soja semeada, na sequência, nos vasos. Os fatores de reprodução (FR) de P. brachyurus obtidos nas diferentes espécies vegetais avaliadas variaram de zero (Crotalaria spectabilis, crambe, guandu ‘Fava Larga’ e tremoço branco) a 4,8 (Lab- Lab ‘Rongai’). As espécies vegetais com FR mais altos, independente da quantidade/composição da fitomassa incorporada, resultaram sempre em populações do nematoide mais elevadas nas raízes da soja (‘CD 202’). De todas as espécies vegetais testadas, apenas as C. specetabilis (FR=zero) e C. ochroleuca (FR=0,3) reduziram de fato a população original (1.000 nematoides) de P. brachyurus no vaso
Implementing a Coordinated Care Model for Sex Trafficked Minors in Smaller Cities
Background
Addressing the social and clinical service needs of minors who have been sexually exploited remains a challenge across the United States. While larger metropolitan centers have established shelters and service provision specific for trafficked persons, in smaller cities and more rural settings, survivors of trafficking (especially minors) are usually served by multiple, disparate social service and health providers working across different systems. Sexually exploited minors present an even greater challenge due to intersections with child welfare and juvenile justice systems, histories of abuse by family that limit placement options, and limited services that address the complex medical, mental health, and psychosocial needs of these youth. Major health organizations have recommended a coordinated care model that integrates the therapeutic and social service needs of trafficked persons including housing and education; implementation of such service provision requires intensive, multi-sectoral collaboration.
Methods
We present two case studies from an anti-trafficking coalition established in a smaller urban area.
Findings/Conclusions
Multi-sector collaboration requires the development of policies and protocols for addressing the diverse needs (acute and ongoing) of trafficked minors who are often “dual jurisdiction,” involved in both the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. Principles of care including autonomy, empowerment, protection, and safety may be at odds as systems may approach these youth differently. A clearly identified care coordinator can help navigate across these systems and facilitate communication among service providers while protecting client privacy, confidentiality, and autonomy. Assessing the quality of services provided and accountability among service providers remain significant challenges, especially in resource limited settings
Investigations into free tropospheric new particle formation in the central Canadian arctic during the winter/spring transition as part of TOPSE
In this paper, we investigate the role of in situ new particle production in the central Canadian sub-Arctic and Arctic as part of the TOPSE experiment. Airborne measurements conducted primarily in the free troposphere were made from 50° to 90°W longitude and 60° to 85°N latitude during the period from February to May 2000. Data pertinent to this paper include 3–4 nm diameter (Dp) particles, ultrafine condensation nuclei (Dp \u3e 3 nm), fine particles (0.2 \u3c Dp \u3c 3 μm), and the possible nucleation precursor, sulfuric acid, and its precursor, sulfur dioxide. For data averaged over this period, most species showed little evidence for a latitudinal trend. Fine aerosol number concentrations, however, showed a slight increase with latitude. The evolution of various species concentrations over the period of the study show that fine particles also had a consistent temporal trend, increasing at all altitudes from February to May, whereas sulfur dioxide at the surface tended to peak in late March. Ultrafine condensation nuclei and 3–4 nm particles showed no temporal trends. Little evidence for in situ new particle production was observed during the study, except for one atypical event where SO2concentrations were 3.5 ppbv, 2 orders of magnitude higher than typical levels.
