    Single Molecule Michaelis-Menten Equation beyond Quasi-Static Disorder

    The classic Michaelis-Menten equation describes the catalytic activities for ensembles of enzyme molecules very well. But recent single-molecule experiment showed that the waiting time distribution and other properties of single enzyme molecule are not consistent with the prediction based on the viewpoint of ensemble. It has been contributed to the slow inner conformational changes of single enzyme in the catalytic processes. In this work we study the general dynamics of single enzyme in the presence of dynamic disorder. We find that at two limiting cases, the slow reaction and nondiffusion limits, Michaelis-Menten equation exactly holds although the waiting time distribution has a multiexponential decay behaviors in the nondiffusion limit.Particularly, the classic Michaelis-Menten equation still is an excellent approximation other than the two limits.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Acinetobacter johnsonii: an Emerging Pathogen for Cultured Blunt Snout Bream Megalobrama amblycephala

    Bacteriosis has caused significant economic losses in farmed blunt snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala. Only scarce information is available on Acinetobacter johnsonii as a possible causal agent in M. amblycephala. In this study, a virulent strain temporarily named BY3, was isolated from diseased bream, identified phenotypically and molecularly as A. johnsonii. Phylogenetic trees of 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences were constructed to examine the taxonomic position of isolate BY3 and compare it to other known isolates. When screened against a range of common veterinary antibiotics, isolate BY3 has not shown resistance to florfenicol, neomycin, and sulfisoxazole antibiotics in aquaculture.     Synchrony of clinical and laboratory surveillance for influenza in Hong Kong

    Background: Consultation rates of influenza-like illness (ILI) in an outpatient setting have been regarded as a good indicator of influenza virus activity in the community. As ILI-like symptoms may be caused by etiologies other than influenza, and influenza virus activity in the tropics and subtropics is less predictable than in temperate regions, the correlation between of ILI and influenza virus activity in tropical and subtropical regions is less well defined. Methodology and Principal Findings: In this study, we used wavelet analysis to investigate the relationship between seasonality of influenza virus activity and consultation rates of ILI reported separately by General Out-patient Clinics (GOPC) and General Practitioners (GP). During the periods 1998-2000 and 2002-2003, influenza virus activity exhibited both annual and semiannual cycles, with one peak in the winter and another in late spring or early summer. But during 2001 and 2004-2006, only annual cycles could be clearly identified. ILI consultation rates in both GOPC and GP settings share a similar non-stationary seasonal pattern. We found high coherence between ILI in GOPC and influenza virus activity for the annual cycle but this was only significant (P<0.05) during the periods 1998-1999 and 2002-2006. For the semiannual cycle high coherence (p<0.05) was also found significant during the period 1998-1999 and year 2003 when two peaks of influenza were evident. Similarly, ILI in GP setting is also associated with influenza virus activity for both the annual and semiannual cycles. On average, oscillation of ILI in GP and of ILI in GOPC preceded influenza virus isolation by approximately four and two weeks, respectively. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that consultation rates of ILI precede the oscillations of laboratory surveillance by at least two weeks and can be used as a predictor for influenza epidemics in Hong Kong.     Can Electric Field Induced Energy Gaps In Metallic Carbon Nanotubes?

    The low-energy electronic structure of metallic single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in an external electric field perpendicular to the tube axis is investigated. Based on tight-binding approximation, a field-induced energy gap is found in all (n, n) SWNTs, and the gap shows strong dependence on the electric field and the size of the tubes. We numerically find a universal scaling that the gap is a function of the electric field and the radius of SWNTs, and the results are testified by the second-order perturbation theory in weak field limit. Our calculation shows the field required to induce a 0.1 eV{\rm eV} gap in metallic SWNTs can be easily reached under the current experimental conditions. It indicates a kind of possibility to apply nanotubes to electric signal-controlled nanoscale switching devices

    Dynamical description of vesicle growth and shape change

    We systematize and extend the description of vesicle growth and shape change using linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics. By restricting the study to shape changes from spheres to axisymmetric ellipsoids, we are able to give a consistent formulation which includes the lateral tension of the vesicle membrane. This allows us to generalize and correct a previous calculation. Our present calculations suggest that, for small growing vesicles, a prolate ellipsoidal shape should be favored over oblate ellipsoids, whereas for large growing vesicles oblates should be favored over prolates. The validity of this prediction is examined in the light of the various assumptions made in its derivation.Comment: 6 page

    From chemical Langevin equations to Fokker-Planck equation: application of Hodge decomposition and Klein-Kramers equation

    The stochastic systems without detailed balance are common in various chemical reaction systems, such as metabolic network systems. In studies of these systems, the concept of potential landscape is useful. However, what are the sufficient and necessary conditions of the existence of the potential function is still an open problem. Use Hodge decomposition theorem in differential form theory, we focus on the general chemical Langevin equations, which reflect complex chemical reaction systems. We analysis the conditions for the existence of potential landscape of the systems. By mapping the stochastic differential equations to a Hamiltonian mechanical system, we obtain the Fokker-Planck equation of the chemical reaction systems. The obtained Fokker-Planck equation can be used in further studies of other steady properties of complex chemical reaction systems, such as their steady state entropies.Comment: 6 pages, 0 figure, submitted to J.     Primary role of the barely occupied states in the charge density wave formation of NbSe2

    NbSe2 is a prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) material, whose mechanism remains mysterious so far. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we mapped out the CDW gap and recovered the long-lost nesting condition over a large broken-honeycomb region in the Brillouin zone, which consists of six saddle band point regions with high density of states (DOS), and large regions away from Fermi surface with negligible DOS at the Fermi energy. We show that the major contributions to the CDW come from these barely occupied states rather than the saddle band points. Our findings not only resolve a long standing puzzle, but also overthrow the conventional wisdom that CDW is dominated by regions with high DOS.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Numerical observation of non-axisymmetric vesicles in fluid membranes

    By means of Surface Evolver (Exp. Math,1,141 1992), a software package of brute-force energy minimization over a triangulated surface developed by the geometry center of University of Minnesota, we have numerically searched the non-axisymmetric shapes under the Helfrich spontaneous curvature (SC) energy model. We show for the first time there are abundant mechanically stable non-axisymmetric vesicles in SC model, including regular ones with intrinsic geometric symmetry and complex irregular ones. We report in this paper several interesting shapes including a corniculate shape with six corns, a quadri-concave shape, a shape resembling sickle cells, and a shape resembling acanthocytes. As far as we know, these shapes have not been theoretically obtained by any curvature model before. In addition, the role of the spontaneous curvature in the formation of irregular crenated vesicles has been studied. The results shows a positive spontaneous curvature may be a necessary condition to keep an irregular crenated shape being mechanically stable.Comment: RevTex, 14 pages.
